year Bob Dylan decided to surprise us by NOT surprising us. Same procedure as last year. Same band, same songs, same show format. And, it has to be said, same high quality or even higher than 1993. In fact in terms of Bob Dylan's own performance, this has to be the best year since 1988. Still there were some disappointments. No song debuts, excluding one performance of Lady Came From Baltimore by Tim Hardin. Not until the MTV Unplugged sessions was Dignity performed although it was done at various soundchecks during the year. And why no songs from World Gone Wrong? Other noteworthy happenings: the Cooper & Lybrand deal, the Great Music Experience performance in Nara, Japan, The Woodstock '94 performance and finally MTV Unplugged. 2 THE YEAR AT A GLANCE Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec Far East Tour 14 shows The Rhythm, Country & Blues Concert US Spring Tour 25 shows Memphis recording session The Great Music Experiencein Nara, Japan Europe Summer Tour 17 shows US Summer Tour 15 shows US Fall Tour 33 shows Recording of MTV Unplugged Release of Greatest Hits Vol. 3 Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec Keep On Keepin’ On — Bob Dylan 1994 page 5 3 CALENDAR January A Carlene Carter CD-single with tracks from the album Little Love Letters is released. An extra non-album track is Trust Yourself with background vocals by Dwight Yoakim, Howie Epstein, Joe Romersa, Kevin Welch and Bob Dylan. For once Bob's vocal is quite audible and it is a pretty good version. This session dates from January 1993. January Dylan gives Cooper & Lybrand the right to use a recording of The Times They Are A-Changin' done by Ritchie Havens in their commercials. When published it causes great traumatic reactions from fans all over the world. January A *stereo* copy of the promotional Freewheelin' is found in California and sold at auction at a five figure price. February 4 Akihiko Yamamoto interviews Dylan in the lobby of Hotel Okura. It is later printed in the April issue of CROSSBEAT. 5 February Dylan starts his first tour in Japan since 1986 in Sendai. The surprise opener is Jokerman , not played since the 1984 European tour followed by another surprise, If You See Her, Say Hello, last time performed in Osaka Fu, Japan 14 February 1978. Also included is In The Garden , which had been absent in both 1992 and 1993.

  • 1974 Tour with the Band
BOB DYLAN / THE BAND (a collectors guide to the 74 Tour) BOB DYLAN / THE BAND - a collectors guide to the 74 Tour “There are two problems with the 1974 tour: the tapes are crap and Dylan‟s performances are crap.” – C. Heylin, Telegraph 32 pg 86. Introduction This booklet / File (like the anonymous companion volume “Songs of the Underground” for RTR) is intended to document the audio resources available to collectors concerning the 1974 tour with the Band. It is intended to supplement and possibly correct the three major resources available to collectors (Krogsgaard, Dundas & Olof‟s files). Several PA tapes have emerged since Krogsgaard was last updated, and (I believe) there are errors in Dundas (concerning the PA tapes from 11 Feb 1974) that I wished to address. Additionally, none of these references (except for one full listing in Krogsgaard) include the Band sets. While details are difficult to obtain, I have included details of about three- quarters of the Band sets. It is hoped that readers on the web may contribute more information. I believe that the Band was a significant contributor to the 1974 Tour and should be included in any 1974 Tour documentation. I have also identified the sources for the Vinyl and CD bootlegs, where my resources allowed. Often the attributions on Bootlegs are misleading, incomplete or wrong. As an example „Before and After the Flood‟ claims to be from MSG NYC 30.1.1974 when it is actually a combination of the PA tapes from 31.1.74 (evening) and 11.2.74 (evening).

  • Bob Dylan and the Nobel Prize
BOB ENNOBLED BOB DYLAN AND THE NOBEL PRIZE I am a Dylan fan and I know many of his songs by heart. I have seen him perform and have heard him mangle his own work in Birmingham, England, and then delight the Hammersmith Odeon. I have watched him forget some of the words to ‘Mr Tambourine Man’ in the Leisure Centre at Bournemouth. Indeed, since about 1963 and The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan I have spent many leisure hours and vital pounds, first of pocket money and then of earned income, keeping up with much of Dylan’s copious output. I’ve even tried to read his ‘novel’ Tarantula. While I am aware of his vocal and musical limitations and the way he can move from brilliant to dire, I love some of his songs, his phrasing and intonation this side of idolatry and sometimes beyond. I think the first four Dylan tracks I bought were on an 1963 EP called Dylan (Extended Play: remember those?) which rotated on the turntable at 45 rpm as his astonishing twenty-one-year old-voice sang: ‘Don’t Think Twice, it’s alright’, ‘Blowin’ in the Wind’, ‘When the Ship Comes in’ and then was it ‘Corinna, Corinna’? His way with song words has long held my qualified admiration and I enjoyed reading his Chronicles (Volume One) when they came out in 2004. For me, even with Dylan at his uneven best, it’s the words that matter most and the way he delivers them in the best of his supremely memorable songs. If I had to name my current top ten of his tracks, chosen with particular attention to the words and to do so rapidly from memory, I’d probably go for the following: ‘Boots

It has been commented on in terms of interpretation of the lyrics of his songs, of their musical treatment, and of the distinctiveness of Dylan’s performance style, while Dylan himself has been treated both as an important figure in the world of popular music, and also as an artist, as a significant poet.

  • Tell Tale Signs
I don't know anybody who's made a record that sounds decent in the past 20 years, really. You listen to these modern records, they're atrocious, they have sound all over them. There's no definition of nothing, no vocal, no nothing,… remember when that Napster guy came up across, it was like, ‘Everybody’s gettin’ music for free.’ I was like, ‘Well, why not? It ain’t worth nothing anyway. Bob Dylan 2006 A compilation of bits and Bobs from last 30 years? That'll be $129.99. Sony 2008 --- Introduction: I wrote this very soon after the release of Tell Tale Signs. Although I was presuming ISIS would be delayed in order to allow a more considered take on the release, my own work commitments demanded an early response in any case. I have presented it as a dialogue that highlights – if not exaggerates – trends I have felt in myself and in discussions amongst Dylan fans at large. I have taken the liberty of framing the dialogue in a setting plagiarised brazenly from a classic as Bob does with many an out of copyright source as Dylan Cynic would say or, if you are aligned to Dylan Enthusiast rather than Dylan Cynic, the framework of the dialogue alludes intriguingly to a past literary master in much the same way Dylan binds his own work artistically to Ovid in Modern Times. I won’t mention the play it comes from as the fun is surely always in the searching and then deciding if it is just rip-off or a deeply thought allusion that adds to the whole.

  • Scobie on I'm Not There
I’M NOT THERE (1956-2007) Stephen Scobie Je est un autre—Arthur Rimbaud I’m Not There (2007) In this autumn season of 2007, I can see that I am going to be thinking a lot about the Bob Dylan song known as “I’m Not There (1956).” At least, that is the title given to it on most of its early, bootleg appearances. Now that it has finally been officially released, the sub-title date has been dropped—which is a pity (since it added an element of mystery to the song) but also understandable (since no good explanation of the date has ever been given). “I’m Not There” is perhaps the ultimate Dylan bootleg, and has always been a subject for cult idealization as the most obscure of Dylan’s “lost” songs: a major master- piece that almost no one knows, and which indeed seems to conspire actively against being known. Now, it has become the title of Todd Haynes’s movie I’m Not There, “inspired by the music and many lives of Bob Dylan”—“many” being the operative word. The film is already famous for casting six different actors to play aspects of Dylan at different points in his career. If this strategy is a gimmick, it is a successful one: the film is generating vast amounts of advance publicity, much of it based on the photographs of Cate Blanchett looking, uncannily and androgynously, like 1966 Bob. The film is not due for North American release until late November, though it has played in prestigious festivals like Toronto, New York, and Venice.

  • Eric Clapton
