J. m ' i War Major Photograph from the author's collection August TELESCOPE 1 72 T TELESCOPE August 173 LAKERS OF WORLD WAR I: THE WARS When the United States entered the First War in early 1917, there were approximately ninety-nine ocean type freighters under construction.or under contract in Great Lakes shipyards. With a few exceptions, these vessels were basically Fredrikstad type freighters. The exceptions included two “ over-size” (345 feet long) three island type vessels which were later bulkheaded through the canals. In addition there were four engines-aft ships of a design developed by Great Lakes Engineering Works for the Amer­ ican coastwise coal trade between Hampton Roads and New Eng­ land. And two diesel jobs were building at Manitowoc for Scan­ dinavia. Of the remaining 93 ships, the largest group was intended ultimately for the well known British line, Cunard Steamship Co. of Liverpool. These had been contracted for either by Cunard directly or through various British and American brokers acting in their behalf. Following the British tradition of nomenclature in World War I, these vessels were given two-word names, the first word of which was "War. ” The United States Shipping Board requisitioned all 99 of these ships in May, 1917, for American flag service. There was a lot of litigation involved, and not everybody was happy about the final outcome. But the requisitioning was done, and these vessels subsequently flew the American flag. At that time, no American system of nomenclature had been selected, so apparently the Shipping Board decided to keep the British “ War” names for a while at least. In due time, a new series of names for Great Lakes built ships was determined upon, using the name "Lake" as the first word. Some sources credit this system to Mrs. Woodrow Wilson. Be this the case or not, most of the requisitioned vessels were renamed with “ Lake” names. (Note: Five of the “ Wars” were delivered to their British owners before the United States entered the war, and in this way escaped the "Lake” renaming.)     UNDERWATER IMAGING ON THE GREAT LAKES TO LOCATE DEEP WRECKS SARAH BRAULIK MAY 4, 2007 A SENIOR THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN ARCHAEOLOGICAL STUDIES UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN-LA CROSSE ABSTRACT Commercial Shipping on the Great Lakes began in 1679 with the arrival of the Griffon; the history of Great Lakes shipwrecks began with this same ship in the same year when she failed to reach port after setting sail out of Washington Island for Niagara. Since this first foundering, there have been an estimated 10,000 shipwrecks on the Great Lakes. The current method for locating these shipwrecks has been to do library research to determine a search area and then use side-scan sonar to locate the ship within that given area. Once the wreckage has been located, SCUBA divers descend on the site to identify the ship. Unfortunately, this method only works within the depths that a person can safely descend and ascend, roughly 400 feet, a relatively small portion of the Great Lakes. Recent technological advances in underwater imaging and sonar has made it possible to explore shipwrecks at depths beyond that which a person equipped with SCUBA gear can withstand, but this technology has not yet been utilized on the Great Lakes. This thesis will explore these new technologies and how they would be beneficial in the location, identification, and mapping of Great Lakes shipwrecks located in deep water. 2 INTRODUCTION On November 17, 1958 the Carl D. The effects on navigation were determi ned by comparing the transportation costs under limited regulation of Lake Erie, with the costs under the present Lake Erie outlet conditions. Transportation costs were determined for the four bulk commodities of iron ore, coal , 1imestone, and grain which comprise nearly 85 percent of all Great Lakes traffic. Eva1 uation of commodities comprising the remaining 15 percent would not 'affect significantly the results. The analysis involved forecasting of major operational elements of the navi- gation system, such as vessel characteristics, vessel operating costs, traf- fic volumes, trade routes, etc. Transportation costs for 1985, 2000, and 2035 were determi ned usi ng a con~putermodel which cal cul ated effects on vessel loading and therefore transportation cost using the water level regime determined in the regulation study. A1 1 costs and benefits are based on 1979 price levels, using an interest rate of 8-112 percent. The benefits or losses are expressed as total present worth values for the period 1985 through 2035, and as equivalent average annual val ues. Limited regulation of Lake Erie would have the effect of lowering the water levels of that lake as well as those upstream.
