3 PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Springwood Cricket Club has had another great year on and off the field and I continue to be proud of both our achievements and probably more importantly of the way we play the game and the values we drive as a club. This approach to our game starts from our Milo Have-A Go program and our Under 8’s and goes right through to our seniors. In addition, as with all years, there is much that also goes on behind the scenes by many people to enable our cricketers to get onto the park each week and I’m very grateful for these ever passionate volunteers for their time and energies.

One of our main driving values at the Club is 'Increasing Participation in Cricket' and to this extent, Springwood Cricket Club continues to be a strong contributor to our local area. This season was one of the wettest seasons I can remember but despite this, when the rain let us play, there were many strong performances. Congratulations to all our players who competed this year and to our premiership winning 1 st and 3 rd grade sides. Also, a big thank you to all our volunteers including the Junior coaches and managers and the Senior Captains (and managers). The fact that these individuals step forward and take on these roles means a better season for us all - so thank you.

This year saw the third Legends Dinner. Ironically, the aforementioned inclement weather resulted in our annual ‘Back to Springwood’ Day – which usually follows the Legends Dinner -never actually getting underway this season. Despite this, the Legends night was yet again a fantastic success with great speeches by former NRL head referee, Greg McCallum and Australian representative Blind Cricketer, Ben Phillips. The highlight of the night was the recognition of our newest (and youngest) Life Member, Adam Thomas, a true current stalwart of our Club.

I would like to also acknowledge our committee. It’s been another pleasurable year running the club with such a great bunch of people.

And lastly, thank you to all who supported our club this season. I am very proud to have been president of this club during another fantastic year and I look forward to seeing you all (and potentially playing with a number of you) in season 2012/13.

Yours in cricket,

David Williams

President, Springwood Cricket Club

4 JUNIOR PERPETUAL TROPHY WINNERS

JUNIOR CRICKETER OF THE YEAR: Aidan Williams

This season’s Junior cricketer of the year had a great season, leading his side from the front each week. Whether it was batting, bowling or fielding, Aidan performed with distinction. He scored 223 runs at an average of 22.3, took 9 at 27 with the ball and was responsible for taking 7 catches. His highlight of the year was making a fantastic 63 which included 6 boundaries.

MOST PROMISING JUNIOR CRICKETER: Douglas Rogers

Douglas had a great season in the U14’s, contributing heavily to ensure that his team had the chance to make it to the final. His batting netted him 151 runs at an average of 18.9, including a highest score of 29. His safe hands held 4 catches and he took 13 wickets at 7.2. Such was the success of his season Douglas was selected in the Under 13 emerging blues squad.

PAUSEY SHIELD: Matthew Hunt (Junior Clubman of the Year)

The Pausey Shield for Junior Clubman of the Year is not awarded for superb ability on the field, though Matthew did have a solid season both with bat and ball, scoring 104 runs @ 13.4 & taking 5 wickets. What caught the attention of everyone in the club was the way Matthew embodied the spirit of cricket that exists in our club. His sportsmanship was indicative of the way we all would like to play cricket, and see cricket played. His good performances on the field were no more important than the way he went about his ‘work’. Matthew also helped out with the Milo In2Cricket program this season, as well as supporting the club at it’s annual Back to Springwood Day and supported the senior grades by playing a full season in 8 th Grade.

I loved coaching the Under 8’s this year. To see our cricketers go from hardly knowing which end of the bat to hold to all being very capable by the end of the year was fantastic. I especially enjoyed coming back after the Christmas break to find out that they’d all discovered what Twenty20 cricket was all about.

We had all the usual “Who’s bowling next?”, “Can I open the batting today?”, “How many overs before drinks?” etc type of questions, and I don’t expect they will stop until the kids reach the U14’s. And the rain ...will it ever stop? Still we enjoyed ourselves.

Individually, the boys played as follows:

Liam Bayliss For a first time cricketer, Liam’s year was fantastic. He excelled with both bat and bowl and in the field, if the ball was anywhere in the vicinity (and sometimes even if it wasn’t), he was always racing after it and throwing it in at full pace. Highlights this year from Liam were him bowling a couple of leg spinners on target and talking the finer points of the game with me on our way out to field, such as one example after Christmas when I was informed that it was “a good seeing day” and that “early wickets were the key. Great Season Liam ... see you next season.

Bethany Droll If you’re looking for a person who’s going to have the MOST fun on the cricket field, you can’t go past Bethany. Bethany did everything this season, be it batting, bowling, -keeping on fielding with a smile from ear to ear. Highlights for Bethany this year were her improved batting over the year including some great shots in the last couple of matches and the look of absolute concentration on her face as she bowled. Well done Beth, Great Season! Look forward to seeing you next one.

Lachlan McGrath Lachlan joined us early this season having received ‘the call up’ from the hustle and bustle of the Milo “Have-A-Go” Friday afternoon cricket program. And he hit the ground running excelling with the bat and the ball. You wouldn’t know he was the youngest in the side! Highlights for Lachy were some of his batting at the end of the year and his improvement in his bowling from the start of the year until the end. Well done mate – looking forward to next year.

Finn McDonald As umpire, everytime I looked around it seemed Finn was there ready to have a bowl this year. And always always with a smile on his face. Forming one half of the Skinner/McDonald partnership for this year Finn was another of those cricketers who improved out of sight by the end of the year – especially his batting. My Finn highlight was his batting in the last games – when he got a decent bat in his grip... big things ahead next year Finn, looking forward to it!

Paddy Murphy With so many brothers, there was no way that Paddy wasn’t going to improve over the course of the year and improve he did. With the bat, a very solid player who hits a mean ball. With the ball, a very accurate bowler who will only improve more nxt year and beyond. My Paddy highlight was his bowling in the last couple of games ... very accurate. Good season Paddy – see you next year.

Daniel Skinner Dan is the second half of the Skinner/McDonald partnership and his enthusiasm in every part of this game shone through. When the season stared, Dan, could hardly get the ball down the other

7 end when bowling ... by the end of the season, he was getting ball up there and I lost count of the number of batsmen that he bowled. My Dan highlight wa his bowling improvement and some of his batting at the end of the year... a glimpse of things to come next year. Well done Dan, look forward to seeing you back.

Sam Turner Our little nuggetty Sam … What a player. As a left handed bat, Sam technique looks first class – getting his front foot out to the ball and his bowling improved out of sight over the year. I especially enjoyed Sams batting and the fact that he hit some great pull shots in the last games but my absolute highlight from Sam was that over the course of his 12 balls each innings, his bowling run up would get longer and longer. On a couple of occasions, he circled around the boundary marker – Brett Lee, eat your heart out! Great season Sam, looking forward to next year.

Eloise Williams Having ended (or postponed) a blossoming Ballet career (much to her mum’s dismay), Eloise found her sport this year – and that sport is cricket. Eloise loved everything about this game and having an older brother who shows her no mercy in the backyard games, her batting and bowling are very strong for her age. My Eloise highlights this year were her bowling, her running between the wickets and her batting, especially the 4 that she hit in one of the first games. A Great Season Eloise … looking forward to next year.

With any team, it’s impossible to do everything without the all important helpers who go above and beyond. Thanks to all the parents for your support but particularly to Dan Turner and to Corin Murphy for taking the boys on the weekend I was away.

Its been a pleasure coaching the U8’s this year and I’m really looking forward to next year. I leave you with this picture...

Ive heard of losing the ball in the long grass but you know its been a wet season when there’s a risk of losing a player!

UNDER 9

What a season 2011/12 was for Springwood u/9 cricket. Several new players have taken up this great game and had a blast during the season as a result. They have all made giant strides in their cricketing skills in both batting and bowling.

It was certainly an odd season with the amount of time lost due to rain on both Saturdays and training mid week. But the boys made the most of the cricketing days by getting involved and having fun. They can look back and be very proud with what they have achieved this season. Here is a quick summary of each player's season.

Ryan Hanrahan Showed enormous improvement with both bat and ball. By seasons end, Ryan had one of the smoothest bowling actions in the team. Ryan’s batting could be described as explosive, and really developed as a batter, especially with a few beautiful pull/hook shots which rocketed to the boundary. Also looked a natural with the gloves.

Connor Hogan I really wanted to start calling Connor 'Pigeon McGrath' such was his natural ability to bowl a beautiful delivery consistently going on to hit the top of off stump. Connor went overseas for a couple of months during the season...my suspicion was his Dad was arranging an overseas playing contract...but he did return and started where he eft off. His throwing in the field was also very strong and created a good few run outs too.

Ethan Powell One half of our Canadian juggernaut. Ethan was another big improver and had a great first season of cricket. Ethan has his own distinct style which is very effective. His bowling really developed to the point he was running in off half a dozen steps and delivering a nice consistent ball on the stumps. The thing I liked about his batting was taking that first big step towards the ball, making it easier to get in position to hit a good cricket shot.

Owen Powell Canadian juggernaut member and twins with Ethan. Provided many fun moments in the field, and did not hesitate to give his brother a ribbing about pretty much anything. Owen displayed probably the most enthusiasm to try absolutely everything, he was so keen to be involved. His batting got better and better and he really took to the game which was great. In the field he was always looking for that elusive catch.

Zane Stavrakis Zane is another first year player and really got involved in the team. His footwork in his batting improved dramatically by the end of the season, and as a result was playing some nice shots and with good timing too. Has power in those arms and I can see some hefty shotmaking in the future.

Miles Lidster Miles was a livewire in the field with some impressive fielding efforts. He was very enthusiastic and loved a good celebration, especially of a run out. The great thing about Miles was he did everything with a smile. His batting and bowling was improving throughout the year and was involved in some really good batting partnerships involving good shots, calling and running between wickets.

9

Callum Dyer Callum was a massive improver throughout the season particularly in bowling. Callum quite obviously worked hard on practising his action and that paid off towards the end of the year, being able to clean bowl a couple batters. Callum always enjoyed himself which was great.

Campbell Rogers Campbell looks to be a classic allrounder as his ability with both bat and ball, and in the field was good from the start. Campbell always looked to be thinking about which shots to play and where to place them. His bowling was very good too and was always itching to try the odd leg spinner. Top season from Campbell.

William Turner Bill loved the cricket season. He was able to develop a solid batting technique and also put a lot of thought into how he was going about his batting when out in the middle. He loved his bowling as well which was nice and consistent. Highlights for me would be his calling when running between wickets, and also a knack for hitting the stumps in the field for a few run outs in the last few weeks of the year.

All in all, a most enjoyable season. It was the first time I had been involved and I thought it was great. A massive thanks to Dave Williams who did all the coaching and organising throughout the week. It was a massive task for him taking two reams, but he did it brilliantly. Thanks to the boys for making it fun and I hope to see them all back next year.

10 UNDER 10 - ADAMSON

Edwards, Samuel Farrell, Liam Gawthorne, Thomas Hume, Cameron Jackson, Kane Orton, Cameron Owen, Mitchell Pagitz, Jordan Williamson, Benjamin Williamson, Joshua Wardell, Isaac Bettencourt, Michael

Report:

Congratulations boys on an outstanding season, it has given me, and I'm sure the parents, a great deal of pleasure to see these boys improve beyond all expectations, indeed one of our new recruits Mitchell Owen's improved skills with both with bat and ball need to be seen to be believed. The same could also be said of both Josh and Ben Williamson, Josh's brick wall of defence batting has been invaluable and his younger brother Ben, playing above his age, has proved to be quite dangerous with a leather ball in his hand.

To our players from last season, Liam Farrell has once again stepped up when needed, surprising a many batsmen this year with some super bowling. Cameron Hume has also come ahead in leaps and bounds, his run-up has doubled in length - and so has his pace, keep it up Humey. Our other Cameron, Orton, has shown some great flair with both bat and ball - nice work Cameron. Jordan Pagitz's first year in cricket shows great promise, if his enthusiasm is any measure, he'll be one to watch. The unassuming Sam Edwards caught a few batsmen by surprise with his 'floating' medium pacers, not too mention a very memorable couple of catches. Though both Isaac Wardle and Michael Bettencourt were unable to finish the season, their efforts were much appreciated.

Finally we come to Tom Gawthorne and Kane Jackson, Tom's stylish batting efforts were a pleasure to watch and his ability to swing the ball comes effortlessly. Kane, though not the technician Tom was, still managed the strong arm 17 boundaries and his tearaway speed with the ball found a few batsmen trembling and many stumps flying. Thanks to all the Mum's, Dad's and Grandparents for their support, a special thank you to Alby Farrell for his scoring and Ross Gawthorne for his umpiring. To our Manager Jodie Hume, we all thank you for your tireless efforts in organising all the behind the scenes details, it is appreciated.

11 UNDER 10 - LEWIS

This year has been a very successful year for the Springwood Lewis Under 10’s. The twelve boys in our team deserve high commendation for their enthusiasm and efforts at training and during games throughout the season.

There were outstanding contributions from all players throughout the year:

Luke Major was very successful in all facets of the game. He deserves special mention for his bowling taking numerous wickets. Luke also took arguably the catch of the year at deep mid- wicket – Well done Luke!

Joe Shalders had a great year producing some fine innings with the bat and consistently taking wickets with the ball. His game is improving all the time – Great season Joe!

Liam Wright-Terry was Mr consistent throughout the year scoring plenty of runs with a top score of 25 and being our leading wicket taker for the year. An outstanding effort Liam!

Reilly Bashford also had a very good year with both the bat and the ball taking many important wickets during the season. Reilly was an asset to our team.

Ben Tracey was one of our most successful bowlers and batters throughout the year however his fielding deserves the biggest mention as he was responsible for many run-outs with his bullet like throw. Great season Ben!

Jack Noble was outstanding with both bat and ball all season. He produced many fours for the team with a top score of 20. He is an outstanding talent – Great season Jack!

Jack Sparkes displayed great batting form late in the year and was one of our leading wicket takers, always performing at the highest level with the ball in his hand. Well done Sparkesy - Cricket is in the blood!

Manni Foeken was also a top performer in all areas of the game and his batting and bowling improved every week. Great work Manni!

Ethan Muller produced some fine innings with the bat with a top score of 23, was very economical with the ball and produced some fine fielding displays throughout the year. He lives and breathes cricket - Well done Ethan!

Rory Hill displayed massive improvement throughout the year, taking many wickets and applying himself with the bat every innings. Great start to your cricket career - Well done Rory.

James Parbery also improved significantly throughout the year in all facets of the game producing some fine innings late in the season and taking many wickets for the team. Great season James!

Elliott Dunn scored a mountain of runs with a top score of 22 and was only dismissed twice before leaving us for the nation’s capital at Christmas time. Elliott was an asset to our team – Well done Elliott.

12 Thank you to our wonderful manager Kyle Sparkes for her outstanding ability to organise the coach and the team throughout the year.

Steve Muller

Coach

13 UNDER 11

Season 2011/12 saw an outstanding improvement from the boys. Had it not been for the bad weather, I have no doubt we would have not only made the semi finals but given the leaders a real scare.

Jarrod ”J-Rod” Hackney – Asked at the beginning of the season if he could wicketkeep for the season and made a real fist of it. A clever thinker behind the stumps topped the team for catches and run out assists. Always quick between the wickets and when he was batting the scorer was always kept busy.

Arin Monaghan – One of the real improvers this year and was outstanding with the ball. Was right up there in the wicket taking department and proved a real handful for any batsman.

Jai Monaghan – One of the big hitters in the team and showed a lot of promise as back up wicketkeeper when given an opportunity at the end of the season. One of the real characters.

Liam “The Bish” Bishell – Outstanding with both bat and ball. Was always on target with the ball, topping the wicket count and was a picture of concentration with the bat. A real team player and had an outstanding season!

Braydon “Chicken” Currie – Tall left armer who troubled the batsmen with his height and movement. Also one of our leading fieldsman with a safe pair of hands and strong throwing arm. Looking forward to seeing him bowl next season, should take a bagful of wickets.

Tommy “Smurf” Murphy – Not sure what Tom took over the Christmas break but came back twice as good after the holidays. One of the new guys in the team who was a pleasure to coach and started to cause a lot of trouble with his leggies in the second half of the season.

Zac Farley – Another of our big improvers and a fine example of what happens when you are prepared to put the extra time into training. Hit the ball with a lot of power and went from bowling his leggies early in the year to good medium pace in the second half of the season. Our specialist slip fieldsman who took a couple of pearlers in that position during the year.

Cameron Lever – Showed again what an outstanding cricketer he is. Fields as good as many twice his age and always set the game alight when he came into bat. Absolute pleasure to coach with a great attitude. Real leadership material.

Noah “Cyclone” Tracey - Bowled with good pace and swing and was unlucky not to have taken a bag full of wickets. When he had the ball in his hand there was always a chance of something happening. Also one of our best with the bat. Good all round season.

Blake Tester- Bailey – Grew with confidence as the season wnet on. A real Ricky Ponting in the field, quick to pounce on anything and was instrumental in a number of run-outs. Also excellent with the ball and took a few important wickets for the team.

Jeremy Hume – A gets better and better with each season. Bowled extremely well and showed good cricketing skills with the bat. Good caller between wickets and never missed an opportunity to run.

14

Thanks again to all the parents for making it such an enjoyable season and for chipping in to help out with the scoring and warming the boys up before each game.. In particular Bryan and Adele for their managerial efforts and the Bishells for organising the BBQ each week, sponsoring the team and their generosity in organising the RAAF facilities for our end of season get together.

Peter Tracey Coach

15 UNDER 12

If success is measured in smiles on faces and enjoyment of the game of cricket then 2011-12 was a very successful year for the under12’s. There were many close games recorded as losses for the Springwood boys and of course the string of wet weather draws that made it difficult for the team to mount a second round comeback to make the semi-finals. All of the players were both a credit to the club and to their parents every time they walked onto the field. Every week players demonstrated a love for cricket, respect for each other and more importantly outstanding sportsmanship. Who could ask for more!

In terms of statistics, we finished 6 th on 44 points, which included 5 wins and 8 losses. We scored 1277 runs in total, conceded 1281 runs and took 88 wickets. Minor Premiers Emu Plains won the competition after the semi-finals and Finals were washed out – which was rather controversial as Glenmore Park was undefeated for the season but had more games washed out.

From the coach’s corner, we would like to thank all the parents for their support of the boys and in particular those fathers who helped out every week at training with helpful hints and general motivation. A big thanks also to Kevin and Noel who tackled the scoring job for most of the year.

Parents really are the ones who teach their son’s what sport is about. Coaches hopefully reinforce that. One incident which displays this attitude was when the boys played St Paul’s Green in the first round. St Pauls did not win a game all year with most of their players taking on their first season of cricket. In our first game the Springwood boys openly encouraged their struggling batters and applauded their efforts throughout the whole game. This was not prompted by coaches or parents. It came from the boys alone…now that is cricket!

The Team

Matthew BIRD ‘Birdie’ was a new- comer to the Springwood club. He demonstrated an enthusiasm for the game and developed the ability to bowl FAST. Snaring 8 wickets for the season with his best bowling 2/0 he continued to improve each week. An unlucky season with the bat averaging 5 but there is a lot of potential there for future years. He was always supportive of others in the team and was clearly one of the politest young people you could meet. Henry COX Henry demonstrated the qualities of a strong all-rounder. Sound batting with a HS of 21 for the season along with extremely accurate bowling( 8 wickets at 1.56 runs per over) established him as a very valuable team player. Add to this his keeping ability, his fielding prowess and his leadership qualities and you get a wonderful sportsman with considerable potential. Henry is definitely a strong club player for the future. Harry DREW Harry featured strongly in the batting and bowling hall of fame for the PJCA. He came first in the comp in the bowling averages taking 15 wickets for the season at 1.93 runs per over. This included a best bowling effort of 3/2. He also achieved a top 20 result in the batting averages. Add to this Harry’s outstanding fielding ability, leadership qualities and ethical approach to the game and you have the complete cricketing package. Oliver DUTTON Oliver (mini-man) lives for his cricket! Although unlucky at times in the bowling stakes he was still able to snare 4 wickets with a best bowling of 1/8 off 4 overs. He also developed a nice little leg break throughout the year that surprised everyone, including Ben who almost lost his helmet. Oliver was like a rabbit between the wickets and achieved his all-time HS with the bat this season - 12 NO. He also repeatedly knocked the stumps over with his bullet-like throws.

16

Aaron MINNEY Aaron had a very successful season with a good all-round performance with both bat and ball. Achieving a remarkable 10 wickets for the season (11 th best in the comp) with a good mix of pace and spin along with some very good batting performances (HS 28 / av. 20.5) saw him take his place as a valuable team member. Of course his most memorable effort was his one-handed reflex catch in slips to dismiss a key batsman. And who could forget his lollies at drinks!? Ryan MULVANEY Ryan is a talented athlete who displayed skill in all areas of cricket this season. Averaging just under 20 with the bat (HS 48) and express bowling off a shortened run (6wks / 1.98 RPO) he was a valuable asset to the team each week. Ryan was also one of the most enthusiastic fielders with the ability to get the ball to the stumps from anywhere on the field. Of course, his true talent was to get his whites dirtier than any other player on the field! Nicholas McMASTER Nick was a new-comer to the game of cricket this season. His enthusiasm for the game was on display every training session and game and his skills developed strongly as the season progressed. Loved by all his team mates for his courage and tenacity, Nick was able to post some runs with the bat and of course everyone remembers his first wicket. He finished with 3 wickets for the season with his best 1/9 off 4 overs. Benjamin PAUL Ben continued to develop as a confident batter, bowler and keeper throughout the season. With the ability to graft runs to any part of the field (like a modern day Michael Bevan) and with the pace of bowling increasing, he will continue to frustrate the most determined bowlers. Ben averaged 11 with a HS of 21. He also took 4 wickets with the ball and was a key component of the team behind the stumps and in the field taking 6 catches in total.

Daniel SMITH Few players could claim to have achieved as much in their first year of cricket as Daniel has this season. With the poise and motivation of an accomplished cricketer he finished 10 th in PJCA batting averages (151 runs / av. 21.57 / HS 32), 21st in the bowling (9 wks. / 2.78 RPO) and 5 th in the fielding (10 catches). But cricket isn’t just about statistics. Daniel also demonstrated a strong sense of team and a quiet competitiveness that will ensure he develops into a key player in the future. Matthew WALKER ‘Walkie-talkie’ began the season as a new-comer to the game of cricket. With enthusiasm and tenacity he continued to improve his game each week. Although not scoring heavily with the bat most weeks he did contribute with the ball, taking 3 wickets, his best being a 1/4 effort of 4 overs. Matt was also a good team player in the field taking 3 great catches and affecting 2 run-outs. The best is yet to come from this Daniel Vittori look-alike.

Joshua WILLIAMS Josh is an excellent team player who really enjoys his cricket. His enthusiasm for 20/20 cricket seems to have flowed into his batting with some short but entertaining innings the feature of his game this season. He was also able to dislodge some of the more talented batters with his lofty left-armed deliveries taking 5 wickets for the season (Best 2/8 off 3 overs). Arguably the most knowledgeable player in the team Josh is of course best known for his ability to block out everything and read whilst waiting to bat.

Coaches: Brad Drew & Greg Dutton

17 UNDER 14-1

Well done boys on a great season. The under 14/1’s finished 4 th in a very strong competition. We improved tremendously this season culminating in beating RSL (a team we had not defeated all season) in the final competition game of the year. All players should be proud of their achievements as Peter and I are.

On behalf of the players I would like to acknowledge all the parents for all their help and especially Peter for coaching the team.

Also I special thanks to Doug Rogers, Ben Crouch, Fionn Wilkonson and Jarrod Hackney for filling in for us when we were short this season.

Team is as follows:-

Ryan Hackney – had a fabulous year topping the batting and bowling for the season also grabbing a hat trick along the way.

Daniel Howie – a solid performance from Dan this year showed a lot of resolve with the bat witch attributed to his highest score.

Lewis Hughes – a new player to the club and his first year of cricket started off with a wicket in his first game is showing great potential in the future.

Billy Kemp – always putting in a solid performance each game and improved on his batting and fielding results from last season.

Harrison Murphy - another new player to the club who improved greatly throughout especially his bowling taking 3 wicket in the last game before the finals.

Harry New – batting and bowling averages have improved greatly this year. He always puts in a 100% each game and shows great leadership within the team.

Connor New – had a great season this year vastly improved from last year also enjoying a little wicket keeping this season.

Jeremy Newton – was finally aloud out from behind the stumps and relished the chance to have a bowl by taking 8 wicket for the season.

Hayden Robson – had an unlucky year as he was unable to play most of the season due to a hip injury he sustained before the comp started.

Ben Ross – another new player showing great potential through the year with stats not showing his true ability I am sure he will improve as a player in the years to come.

Harrison Slatford –another good year always working had at his bowling and batting techniques at training.

Andrew Ward – another new player to the club and first year of cricket improved with every game especially his leg spin and is keen to learn.

18 UNDER 14 – TIGERS

As has always been the case, this talented group of young men was a team to be respected. In fact, they were easily the best team in the competition, however a cruel turn of events robbed them of what should have been their second Premiership.

Testament to this team’s ability was the pressure I deflected for them to contest the 14/1 competition, and the occasional protest of an opposition Coach or Umpire that they shouldn’t be playing in the 14/2’s. Even though the team boasted containing eight Penrith Representative players, my decision to leave them in the 14/2’s was justified based on the fact that nine of the thirteen were playing above their age group.

The bulk of the boys have been together now for years, and I thoroughly enjoy coaching them. This year, with some going into different High Schools, and others dispersed among many local Primary Schools, I enjoyed observing the mateship amongst them at training where they caught up with each other and enjoyed each other’s company.

I felt extreme disappointment for them when they weren’t given the opportunity to contest the Grand Final. A subsequent protest to the Administration failed, and I am absolutely certain the boys are champing at the bit to get back to the paddock again next September.

Thanks again to all the parents who helped out each week, with special thanks to Colin Orton who often helped me out with training and a big thank you to my long term partner in crime Donna Patterson, who again managed the team sensationally, and did the bulk of the scoring.

A quick testament to the boy’s individual season’s follows:-

Jayson Orton

Two seasons ago, Jayson was one of the best batsmen in the comp. That form came back again this season with him displaying some of the great shots he possesses through the vee, and other shots square of the wicket he has developed through hard work and determination. Enjoying some good partnerships, Jayson scored 108 runs at an average of 18. To compliment his return to former glory with the willow, Jayson developed an aggression that saw him steaming in with the ball extracting bounce that saw many edges (a lot of which weren’t held) from batsman of all calibers. This capability afforded him10 wickets at an average of 10.2 and an economy of 2 runs per over. He took 5 catches and contributed to 2 runouts earning him the team “Fielding” Award. I enjoyed watching Jayson enjoy his cricket. A good year big fella.

William Brazier

Bill continually improves on his previous season. With unequivocal determination, and the tenacity of a tiger Billy impressed his team mates, his Coach and all the parents. Nobody enjoys the game more than Bill, and this season brought one of my fondest and definitely Billy’s most celebrated moment when he hit his first boundary. Bill loves his cricket, he loves being around and encouraging his mates, and loves the competitive aspect of sport. Put a bat in Bill’s hands and nobody gets his wicket easily. This desire saw Bill partake in a few good partnerships, and at times, see off some good bowling that was needed after a mini collapse. Billy scored 36 runs at an average of 18, and with the ball he took 5 wickets. Well done mate.

19 Fionn Wilkinson

Fionn is a massive competitor and last season saw him evolve from being a handy bat, to a solid top order batsman with the full range of shots and the ability to score fast. He scored 122 runs at an average of 20.33 with a highest score of 44 . Once again, patience wasn’t his strength, and when he develops that we will see Fionn having some big innings’. With the ball he claimed 10 scalps at an average of 6.8 and an economy of 2.27 runs an over. In the field, Fionn was fast across the ground cutting off prospective runs, and took 4 catches. Another great season Fionn!

Luke Hodges

Luke again was our main keeper. In this role, he had days where his foot and glove work were brilliant seeing him take 8 catches and featuring in a runout. With the willow, his batting didn’t really improve, however he again paid no respect for bowlers, going after them from the first ball faced! He ended up with 21 runs at an average of 5.25. Luke is a cheeky young man who is great with the banter, and is a wonderful team player. Well done again Lukey!

James Churchill

James is another one of the boys whom quietly goes about his business and improves upon his prior season again and again. Hard work on and off the field with his fitness and batting saw him score 170 runs at an average of 21.25 which saw him achieve the team’s “Batting” Award. With the ball in his hand, he had a deceptively quick out- swinger seeing him bag 5 wickets at an average of 9.6, and in the field he took 6 catches and figured in a runout. Great work big fella! More of the same next season mate.

Hamish Rogers

As an eleven year old, Hamish is one of the team’s senior players whom again excelled with the ball taking 16 scalps at an average of 5.69 including taking a “5 for 6” against EMU/RSL in Round 3. Hamish is no slouch with the bat either figuring in a few game winning batting partnerships. As always, Hamish ran like a hare between the wickets always pushing for the 2 nd , and certainly keeping the scorers busy when he’s at the crease. Off his own bat he scored 68 runs at an average of 9.7. He took 2 catches and figured in 3 runouts. Another great season by a little Champ!

Ewan Rogers

Charging in like Brett Lee, Ewan has developed a great in-swinger that is often unplayable by all caliber of batsman. This great delivery saw him claim 10 wickets at an average of 6.3. He batted without luck scoring 32 runs, and again impressed with the keeper’s gloves when Luke was away. Ewan looked and moved like someone who had kept for years taking 3 catches and being involved in a run-out. At the ripe old age of 10, Ewan punched well above his weight and deserves the team “Most Improved” Award. Well done Ewey!

20 Jacob Patterson

Last season saw Jake became an enforcer with the ball using his height and strength to either knock helmets off, or tear stumps out of the ground. Opening the bowling with his skipper, the pair often perplexed opposing batsman whom had no idea how to play them. Jacob capitalised on this seeing him claim 18 wickets at 8.39 with an economy of just over 2 runs an over. This excellent effort earned Jacob the team “Bowling” Award. To compliment his bowling, Jake was great in the field taking 6 catches, and cutting off many a second run from the deep with his fast accurate arm. With the bat, he didn’t have the same success scoring 37 runs at an average of 6.2, but will work hard on this aspect of his game I’m sure. Great work Jacob.

Ben Crouch

Ben had another great year with the ball, and was easily the best left arm seamer in the competition. Like previous years, Ben quietly went about his business of dismissing batsman with fantastic line, varying pace and swing. This disciplined approach saw Ben take 12 wickets at an average of 7.67, and an economy of 2.3 runs per over. He is often very handy with the bat too, either scoring valuable runs himself, or holding up an end in a great partnership. Ben scored 66 runs at 13.2, and he took 7 catches in the field. A top effort Crouchy.

Jack Crouch

Jack was a new member of the team this season bringing a fantastic leg spinning asset that the team needed, and was well exploited by his Captain. Jack bowled with flair taking 8 wickets at an average of 12 and backed this up with some keen fielding taking 2 catches. With the bat, Jack scored 31 runs at an average of 6.2. I’m pretty sure Jack enjoyed his maiden season with the unit. All up, a pretty good effort among pretty good company. Great work Jack.

Johnathan Manzie

Johno was another newcomer to the team last season. This young man is a quiet achiever whom does what is asked of him. He enjoys batting and displays great concentration skills that often played out to achieving good solid innings’. This brought him 69 runs at an average of 13.8. With the ball, Johno has nice medium paced in-swingers that saw him take 7 wickets at 6.7. He also took 2 catches and was a good talker in the field. Like Jack, Johno brought some skill to the team and thoroughly enjoyed being a part of the unit. A good solid effort mate.

Tristan Muralitheron

The team’s off spinner is Tristan. Sometimes bowling in tandem with Jack, the spin twins tied up the opposition batsman with good flight, length and turn. He was used well by his Captain to slow down the run rate when there were batsman at the crease cruising against pace. Tristan bowled without much luck this season but still claimed 3 scalps with a fantastic economy rate of 2.55 runs per over. Hard work saw Tristan’s batting improve this season seeing him achieve 35 runs at an average of 8.75. Well done Tristan.

21 Douglas Rogers

Dougy is a good cricketer, and has certainly matured into a great Captain. Using his experience, he leads by example, directs the team, sets the field and controls the bowling attack. As Coach, I only had to umpire and Doug takes care of the rest. Doug’sseason with the bat saw him score 151 runs at an average of 18.88, playing same game ending knocks along the way. When bowling, he charges in from the first ball with good pace, length and great control. His stats show that he achieved more maiden overs than anyone in the competition and like Jayson and Jacob, watched many chances go to ground. Regardless, Doug picked up 13 wickets at an average of 7.3, and an economy rate of 1.4 runs an over. He took 4 catches and figured in a run out. His week after week efforts earned him the team’s “Most Valuable Player” Award. A great effort Skipper!

Well done everyone and thanks for the efforts. I look forward to seeing you all again in September.

23 UNDER 16 DIV 2

The U16/2’s had a happy and successful season. The team made the grand final but unfortunately weren’t able to take the title due to wet weather. The season’s efforts culminated in an outstanding semi final victory against a highly fancied Glenmore Park outfit. During the season the players all improved as individuals and developed a great team spirit.

On behalf of the players I would like to acknowledge the support provided by our merry band of parents and supporters. Special thanks to David Moss, Grant Hunt, David Condie, Darren Bowley and Tori Lane for scoring. A special thanks to Nathan Hunt for assisting at training and filling in as coach when I was unavailable – a great effort for a young man who is only one season out of junior cricket himself. A special thanks to Katrina Crater for managing the team.

Jamie Winn © - Jamie captained the team again this year and always led from the front. Jamie’s maturity and tactical awareness were always to the fore. His wicket keeping improved out of sight and he played some important innings. Jamie’s’ best innings was early in the season against St Pauls when he set the standard for the rest of the season by top scoring, taking us past the target.

Henry Bowley – “H” was a welcome addition to the team this season after successful off season negotiations with Faulconbridge CC. Henry immediately impressed with his all round game and attacking attitude. He played some excellent knocks in the middle order with the highlight being a match saving innings (in partnership with Lyndon Moss) against Glenmore Park. “H” chipped in with wickets and catches and showed himself to be an adaptable and mature cricketer.

Joel Carter – Joel worked hard and contributed with bat, bowl and in the field. Joel might have a hard decision to make next season because he shows promises with both his fast medium seamers and his leggies. Joel continued to work hard and improve with his batting. Joel’s best innings was against St Marys Leagues (the eventual premiers) when he and James Lane put together the highest partnership scored against St Marys for the season.

Isaac Condie – The “Iceman” contributed with some solid batting and excellent fielding but it was Isaac’s bowling that made the opposition sit up and notice. When Isaac got his line right he was unplayable and his spell against St Clair was an awesome display of controlled aggression.

Stephanie Dunger – Steph joined the team this year having never played cricket before. She faced a mountain but worked harder than anyone and showed an unbelievable amount of improvement during the course of the season. She was unlucky not to get a few wickets and was always involved in the game when fielding. Steph batted with intelligence and courage. Her innings in the last round against RSL was an example to the rest of the team of what can be achieved when you show some resolve and play with a positive attitude.

Zachary Hameister – “Hammer” looks more and more like a bowler of real quality. When he got his rhythm right “Hammer” showed he is capable of dismissing the best batters in the competition with his lively pace, good bounce and late movement. His best spell was an outstanding “3 for” against St Marys Leagues. No one put more effort into their fielding and Zac was like a wall in the “V”. Zac always showed courage and commitment with the bat in hand.

Matthew Hunt – Matty had a breakthrough year with his batting. After showing promises for many years Matty showed himself to be a reliable and talented top order batsman. His bowling was, again, of the highest quality with the highlight being a superb spell in the semi final to finish off the Glenmore Park innings.

24

James Lane – James’ transfer fee from Glenbrook/Blaxland CC was worth every cent. James immediately impressed with his positive attitude when batting in the middle order. His stroke play and attacking running between the wickets regularly took the initiative away from the opposition. James’s batting highlights included an excellent 50 against Emu Plains, although his innings (in partnership with Joel) against St Marys Leagues was even better. He saved the best for last when he top scored in the semi final. James shared the wicket keeping role with Jamie and impressed with his safe hands and nimble footwork.

Jack Moore – “Santa” batted with more aggression this year and showed he is capable of dominating attacks with his power and timing. His best innings was against Emu Plains when he and James won us the match. Jack’s bowling was “fast, full and furious” and he showed that when he gets his rhythm right he is as quick as anyone in the competition. Jack was excellent in the field.

Lyndon Moss – “Dids” is an intelligent and tough cricketer. He was tenacious with bat in hand and set a high standard in the field. His bowling continued to improve as he bowled with discipline, consistently keeping his outswingers up to the bat and intelligently using his well disguised off cutter.

Will Phillips – Will chipped in with wickets with his handy left arm seamers and displayed safe hands in the cordon. Will regularly opened the batting and improved his technique and resolve during the season. This culminated in the semi final when he played one of the best openers knocks I have seen. Will kept out the Glenmore Park attack (5 representative bowlers amongst them) for 29 overs. His innings soaked up the early pressure and allowed the middle order to get us to a competitive total.

Daniel Sparkes (v/c) – “Sparkesy” had an excellent season with bat, ball and in the field. Daniel led the batting from the top of the order. As the season progressed his bowling improved as he kept a fuller length. No opposition batter was willing, or able, to take the initiative when facing Daniel and a of 5 and economy rate of 1.2 are a testament to this.

Cameron Terry – “Camo” had an excellent all round season. He played some valuable knocks including a match winning half century against St Clair and a well timed cameo in the second innings of the semi final. “Camo’s” bowling continued to impress and he took the most wickets for the team with his pace, swing and seam. “Camo” has the happy knack of taking wickets when they are most needed and he is never out of the game when he has the ball in his hand.
