Anti-Zionism and Antisemitism Cosmopolitan Reflections David Hirsh Department of Sociology, Goldsmiths, University of London, New Cross, London SE14 6NW, UK The Working Papers Series is intended to initiate discussion, debate and discourse on a wide variety of issues as it pertains to the analysis of antisemitism, and to further the study of this subject matter. Please feel free to submit papers to the ISGAP working paper series. Contact the ISGAP Coordinator or the Editor of the Working Paper Series, Charles Asher Small. Working Paper Hirsh 2007 ISSN: 1940-610X © Institute for the Study of Global Antisemitism and Policy ISGAP 165 East 56th Street, Second floor New York, NY 10022 United States Office Telephone: 212-230-1840 www.isgap.org ABSTRACT This paper aims to disentangle the difficult relationship between anti-Zionism and antisemitism. On one side, antisemitism appears as a pressing contemporary problem, intimately connected to an intensification of hostility to Israel. Opposing accounts downplay the fact of antisemitism and tend to treat the charge as an instrumental attempt to de-legitimize criticism of Israel. I address the central relationship both conceptually and through a number of empirical case studies which lie in the disputed territory between criticism and demonization. The paper focuses on current debates in the British public sphere and in particular on the campaign to boycott Israeli academia. Sociologically the paper seeks to develop a cosmopolitan framework to confront the methodological nationalism of both Zionism and anti-Zionism. It does not assume that exaggerated hostility to Israel is caused by underlying antisemitism but it explores the possibility that antisemitism may be an effect even of some antiracist forms of anti- Zionism.

WEDNESDAY, 11 SEPTEMBER 2019 SMULLEN: HUMBLED BY FIRST ,50,000 SALE BENCHMARKS AUCTION'S PROGRESS by Chris McGrath RACING=S SUPPORT ASCOT, UK--Which would you rather have: the colt who topped the opening session at Keeneland the previous day, or all 127 animals who found a new home at Ascot yesterday? You could have corralled the whole herd of them for less. But the beauty with Thoroughbreds, of course, is that each and every individual that changed hands at the Tattersalls Ascot Yearling Sale--for an aggregate ,1,356,850, up 24% in only the third year of the auction--retains the right to prove their relative valuation all wrong, once broken and sent in training. After all, that's exactly what happened with several graduates of last year's sale. Besides the four fillies who have won listed races, they also included a ,28,000 colt beaten just a neck in the G2 Norfolk S. over the road at the Royal meeting; and, one of the fairytales of the season, the ,3,000 filly Bettys Hope (GB) (Anjaal {GB}), who completed a hat-trick for Rod Millman when scooping a ,122,925 pot in the Weatherbys Super Sprint at Newbury in July. P ARK HOUSE STABLES SUMMER MAGAZINE 2021 INTRODUCTION P ARK HOUSE STABLES aving held a training licence for almost eighteen seasons I have conditioned myself to cope with disappointment. Even the great HAidan O’Brien generally operates at a strike rate of 20-25% which means that for every victory he has had to cope with three or four failures. So far the 2021 Flat season has been one of very few disappointments, and not even at my most wildly optimistic moment could I have imagined just how many amazing highs we have been lucky enough to enjoy. From the start of this season things have by and large gone to plan, kicking off with two winners at All Weather Champions Day, a Guineas Trial, a Derby Trial and a Yorkshire Cup. Royal Ascot and Goodwood are always at the top of any stable’s ‘to do’ list and the fact that the Kingsclere team were the leading yard at Goodwood and so nearly filled the same position at Royal Ascot is a tremendous achievement. This Above: Masked marvels at Ascot before Alcohol Free’s win is not only due to the privilege of training some very talented horses Front cover: True love – Oisin and the Group 1 Coronation but also testament to the team we have managed to accrue over the Stakes trophy last few seasons. Everyone at Kingsclere has played their part in this Back cover: A triumphant trio – SANDRINE, David and Kathleen returning to the winner’s enclosure after the Group season’s achievements. 2 Duchess Of Cambridge Stakes One of the most satisfying parts of our success is that the wins have come for a wide variety of owners.
