North Edinburgh's Hidden Gems North Edinburgh’s HIDDEN GEMS Pilton Community Health Project six short walks in Pilton, Muirhouse, Granton & 6Drylaw 1 Pilton Community Health Project believe that North Edinburgh has some great surprises, even for people who have lived in the area all their life. North Edinburgh is 4 miles from the tourist centre of Edinburgh, it includes Muirhouse, Drylaw, Royston Wardieburn, West Granton and West Pilton. Most people don’t travel out this far, but this book offers an opportunity for anyone keen to discover more of the real Edinburgh. These walks take in some of North Edinburgh’s hidden gems • historic buildings such as Caroline House, the old Caledonian railway or Muirhouse Mansion • community initiatives such as the community gardens in Muirhouse and Granton • many wildlife areas such as Forthquarter Park and West Shore promenade. This area has much to offer and what better way than to discover it than by walking, or, for the more energetic, jogging? Most walks featured are circular routes however you can leave some of the routes before the end if you so wish. Take in stunning views of the Forth Estuary while trying out the brass rubbings on route. Pass by historic Caroline House on the way back to the former railway station by Granton Gas works. The hidden gem is a ‘lighthouse’ on Waterfront Avenue which is not a real GRANTON WATERFRONT lighthouse but the depot for the Northern Lighthouse Board (NLB). The NLB R. Until April 2005 I was the Transport Planning Manager with the City of Edinburgh Council. Since April 2005 I have been the Project Development Director with tie ltd, an “arms’ length” company wholly owned by the City of Edinburgh Council. tie has been commissioned by the Council to develop and implement the Edinburgh Tram Project. 1.2 I have a BSc in Civil Engineering from the University of Salford and an MSc in Transportation Engineering from the University of Leeds. 1.3 I have been closely involved with the development of the Tram Project in Edinburgh since its inception. 2.0 BACKGROUND 2.1 The railway route from Roseburn to Crewe Toll was closed to passenger services in 1962 and to goods services in 1967/8. The land was bought as part of a package of routes by the City of Edinburgh Council’s predecessor, Lothian Regional Council. It has been safeguarded, first for a new road, and then for light rapid transit, since 1978. 2.2 In the 1980s Lothian Regional Council developed a two line Light Rapid Transit proposal, branded as ‘Edinburgh Metro’. It was proposed that the East-West Metro line should run off-street from Haymarket to Crewe Toll along the disused railway route from Roseburn through Ravelston, Craigleith and Drylaw. The Metro proposals failed to progress beyond the design and public consultation stages because of the high capital cost and affordability consequent upon the extensive tunnelling elsewhere on the project.

    North West Locality Open Space Action Plan March 2017 North West Edinburgh Open Space Action Plan (March 2017) Introduction This is one of four Open Space Action Plans to support delivery of Open Space 2021, Edinburgh’s Open Space Strategy. Open Space is a key element of Edinburgh’s physical, social and environmental fabric and Open Space 2021 sets guiding standards for existing and new open space provision as the city grows. Through standards based on open space quality, size and distance from homes, the Strategy aims to increase the number of people that can benefit from greenspaces that are sustainably managed, biologically diverse and contribute to health and wellbeing. The Open Space Profile shows how the Locality compares to the overall picture of open space across the city, highlighting changes to provision. It is a working plan, to be reviewed periodically to capture collective efforts which lead to the improvement and extension of Edinburgh’s green network. Actions, including estimated costs, may be subject to review, further feasibility studies and change. The Action Plan sets out proposals to help reduce inequalities in access to good quality open space and play provision. In time, it will reflect local environment priorities emerging through co-production of Locality Improvement Plans by Community Planning partners. The first version shows citywide priorities identified by Edinburgh’s annual parks quality assessment and actions carried forward from the existing Play Area Action Plan (2011-16) and previous Open Space Strategy (2010). The Action Plan will co-ordinate ongoing open space management actions with those relating to development, including changes arising from individual planning decisions and the delivery of new parks and play areas through the adopted Edinburgh Local Development Plan (LDP).

    12 Socio Economic Effects 12.1 Introduction This chapter considers the socio-economic impact of Edinburgh Tram Line One during its construction and operation. Two main aspects of the scheme are considered: • the direct socio-economic impacts of the scheme - this examines the likely impacts on employment, during construction and operation of the scheme; and • the indirect socio-economic impacts, including the impact of the scheme on accessibility along the route and on communities benefiting from easier access to other areas. The following section describes the current socio-economic conditions in the area of the proposals. Section 12.3 reports on the assessment of impacts during construction and Section 12.4, impacts in the long term once the tram is operational. 12.2 Baseline Socio Economic Conditions 12.2.1 General The City of Edinburgh has a strong and growing economy and recent research suggests that this will be fastest growing economy of any major UK city over the next five years (1). Economic growth is closely related to future labour supply and population growth, with a buoyant economy likely to result in both a high level of inward migration and a growth in commuting. 12.2.2 Population The population of Edinburgh is estimated to grow from 453,000 to 465,000 between 2001 and 2011. Information from the 2001 census indicates a variation in population density across the areas of the city served by Line One. High densities are found in the north of the New Town, along Leith Walk and into Leith, through to Newhaven and across the north west of Edinburgh to the areas of Granton, Pilton and Muirhouse.
