KEENELAND JANUARY MARCHES ON STRAIGHT TO NUMBER by Jessica Martini LEXINGTON, Ky - The Keeneland January Horses of All Ages Sale ONE: UNCLE MO continued with its first Book 2 session Wednesday, with a pair of mares bringing six-figures and numbers largely in line with the 2016 Book 2 opener. Fifth and Madison (Street Sense) (hip 1118) brought the day=s top price when selling for $135,000 to Doug Branham. Taylor Made Sales Agency consigned the 4-year- old mare on behalf of Starlight Racing. Bubbles and Babies (A.P. Indy) (hip 1050) also broke the six-figure mark when selling for $125,000 to Josham Farm from the Valkyre Stud consignment. AIt a positive thing to see those two mares break $100,000 today,@ said Keeneland=s Director of Sales Operations Geoffrey Russell. AIt shows that there is still money here for horses.@ After recording double-digit declines in Book 1, Book 2 opened with numbers similar with last year=s corresponding session. In all, 197 horses sold Wednesday for a total of $3,415,900. The average was $17,340--it was $17,351 a year ago. The median dipped 5.56% to $8,500. The buy-back rate for Wednesday=s Uncle Mo | Coolmore session was 33.22%--up from 23.34% last year. Cont. p3 by Bill Oppenheim IN TDN EUROPE TODAY It=s been a good few years since we decided that once a sire ‘DUNDEEL’ COLT TOPS MAGIC MILLIONS had 200 or more year-starters (a horse is counted as a A colt by It’s A Dundeel (NZ) topped the opening session at >year-starter= each year it starts), we were willing to compare Magic Millions when selling to Boomer Bloodstock for him to the general population of sires; until they have that A$900,000. Up until very recently, that >200+ year-starter= threshold meant sires which had just finished having their first 3-year-olds run rarely if ever had that many year-starters in their progeny=s first two years of racing. Well, if it was ever going to happen, it was 2/5 that Coolmore/Ashford sires would be the ones to have so many by the end of the year their first 3-year-olds ran, and sure enough, Ashford=s Uncle Mo had 226 year-starters by the end of 2016. A total of 23 of them were A Runners (just as they are year-starters every year they run, they can be an A Runner every year they run and reach the A Runner threshold, so in Uncle Mo=s case in 2016, there are individual horses--Nyquist, for example--who count as two A Runners, looked at this way)--just over 10% of his year-starters--meaning Uncle Mo ended 2016 with a 5.09 A Runner Index, taking him straight to number one among the 446 North American and European sires which had 200+ year-starters by the end of 2016. For sure it=s the first time a sire with just 3-year-olds has topped the list. Cont. p8 1:31.71 FASTEST Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) Winner Ever

Straight to Number One: Uncle Mo 3-year-olds of 2016 and is thus making his final appearance on this list, was the odd man out, with 633 year-starters). (cont. from p1) Claiborne=s War Front (4.13), who also improved his rating from last year, is the only other sire to top the 4.00 index threshold (meaning 8.00%+ of his year-starters are A Runners). Darley=s Medaglia d=Oro (3.48) and Dubawi (3.32) Galileo (Ire) | Coolmore rank fourth and fifth by 2010-2016 A Runner Index, with Spendthrift=s Into Mischief (3.26) still scoring very high despite the fact that half his foals of racing age were 2-year-olds of 2016, meaning they had considerably less earning power than horses of other ages. The fact that he topped the North American 2-Year-Old Sire List with 2007 1156 2013 1000 2008 1043 2014 937 that crop is very 2009 1143 2015 874 impressive, and he had 2010 1107 2016 820 five 2-year-old A 2011 1144 2017 817 Runners last year 2012 1071 among his 36 two-year-old winners In topping the list in his first year of eligibility, Uncle Mo (also tops among dethrones Coolmore=s flagship sire, Galileo (4.47), who was the North American sires). top APEX sire by A Runner Index the past two years, and who We expected Into has over 2,000 year-starters since the beginning of 2010, as Mischief to fall much opposed to 200 for Uncle Mo. Galileo led the list last year with a further than he has as 4.09 index, which means he actually improved from 2015. In War Front | Claiborne a result of this fact, when you look at the top 20 by A Runner Index (2.53 and imbalance in his ratio of 2-year-olds in comparison to other top above), 12 of them are sires with 800+ year-starters, and seven sires; the fact that his index is still well above 3.00 supports the are sires with under 400 (Monsun, whose last crop were view that this is a sire still on his way up, maybe way, way up.

WEEKLY SALES TICKER by Bill Oppenheim

“Even though the clearance rate for Keeneland January Book 1 was only 52% last year, the fact that fewer than half the catalogue were listed as sold this week has to set alarm bells off. That the gross was down 19% and the average down 21% from last year probably does reflect the catalogue more than the market as a whole, especially as the average is off only about 10% from three of the previous five years. Here’s the thing, though: we’ve been saying ‘quality sells’ for a fair while now; at some point we have to address the fact the breeders have to produce five to get one ‘they want’, but the other four – or say, three of those four – still need to be worth reasonable money. That’s the part that’s not looking so healthy right now.”

APEX BULLET POINTS

! APEX Ratings are assigned only to sires which had 10+ 3-year-olds of the last year covered (this year, that means 10+ foals of 2013). This has two effects: first, it eliminates those 'random' sires, often in small jurisdictions which never compete in the 'big leagues'. Including those has the effect of inflating earnings indexes so that average sires look better than average because they are compared to 'minor league' sires. Second, restricting it to sires with 3-year-olds means freshman sires, with their first 2-year-olds, are not rated; in our experience, their ratings are just too volatile. ! The indexes are calculated on a rolling seven-year basis; each year, the last year is added and the eighth previous dropped off. These calculations cover the period 2010-2016. Therefore, they are 'career' figures for all sires with first foals 2008 (2-year-olds of GI Breeders= Cup Mile hero Tourist stands for inspection at WinStar 2010) or later; War Front and Bernardini had their first foals in Farm=s Open House on Wednesday. Stallions are available for 2008. The seven-year cut-off means that once-great sires which showings from 11am-1:30pm through Jan. 14. | Christie DeBernardis are no longer as good are not rated on their career figures, but on their results for the previous seven years. ! NTRA Establishes Process for Individuals to Urge Treasury to Enact Proposed Pari-Mutuel Regulations: The National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA) has established a system for individuals to submit an e-mail comment directly to the United States Treasury Department in support of newly proposed regulations related to withholding and reporting of pari-mutuel winnings, it was announced Wednesday. The proposed regulations, which would replace outdated regulations adopted nearly 40 years ago, reflect today=s pari-mutuel wagering environment and are expected to positively impact a significant percentage of winning wagers, particularly those involving multi-horse or multi-race exotic wagers. It is believed that the proposed changes will result in tens of millions of dollars in additional pari-mutuel wagering annually. AWith horseracing=s all-important Triple Crown season fast approaching, the NTRA urges Treasury and the Service to adopt the proposed regulations as final regulations as soon as it is administratively feasible,@ said NTRA CEO Alex Waldrop. BOOMER DOES THE DEEL : A SEAT AT BLOODSTOCK=S TOP TABLE AT MAGIC MILLIONS By John Berry The seemingly unthinkable prospect of the dissolution of Ballymacoll Stud moved one step closer at the end of last week when longstanding manager Peter Reynolds admitted that time is running out for a 'lock, stock and barrel' sale of the property and its horses. It was announced last year that the stud's owners, the Weinstock family, intended to sell, thus providing a golden opportunity to buy one of the best breeding operations in the world. Sadly and surprisingly, it seems that no likely purchaser has come forward, with Reynolds last week telling the Irish Field that, AI've been trying to sell the stud and horses as one lot, and there is still a little bit of time for that to happen. If we don't receive an acceptable offer for the farm by mid-February, then we will have to consider public auction.@ cont. p8 Craig ABoomer@ Rounsefell signed for the session-topping colt by Dundeel at Magic Millions on Wednesday | Sharon Chapman IN TDN AMERICA TODAY STRAIGHT TO NUMBER ONE: UNCLE MO By Kelsey Riley Columnist Bill Oppenheim takes a deep dive into the 2016 GOLD COAST, Australia--The best was saved until very nearly APEX ratings. The top-priced filly of the day was a A$700,000 daughter of Tapit bought by Mandalong Stud and trainer Gary Nickson. Eleven lots sold for A$500,000 or more, and those 11 were signed for by 10 different buyers from four countries. With 24 more lots catalogued than last year, the average rose 4.2% to A$192,016, while the median was unchanged at A$150,000. A total of 187 were sold for gross receipts of A$35,907,000 at a clearance rate of 85%, which also marked an improvement from 80% during the same session last year. Magic Millions Managing Director Vin Cox expressed satisfaction with the figures, especially considering the increase in catalogue size. AIt is a bit stronger than last year,@ he noted. AThe average and clearance rate tell you that. We=ve extended the catalogue, so for those two figures to increase is a herculian task.@ cont. p2 THE REAL DEEL Dundeel x Miss Finland colt $900,000 purchased by Boomer Bloodstock

Boomer Does The Deel At Magic Millions cont. from p1 Cox continued, AThe real positive is there is lots of buying at all levels; it=s not all about the six-figure lots. It=s a competitive market and the vendors are here to sell and the buyers are stepping up.@ Cox said he would be pleased to maintain the opening session=s figures throughout the week. AIf we turn the lights off on Saturday night with that clearance rate and average we=ll be tickled pink,@ he said.

The Real >Deel=... As Australia=s season-opening yearling sale, Magic Millions is naturally the place where first-season sires are debuted each year, and former high-profile racehorses like Sepoy (Aus), Pierro (Aus) and All Too Hard (Aus) have seen members of their first crops create fireworks in the sales ring in recent years. The five- time Group 1 winner Dundeel (NZ) (High Chaparral {Ire}) added his name to that list on Wednesday when lot 232, his colt out of 2- and 3-year-old champion and five-time Group 1 winner Miss Finland, was hammered down to Boomer Bloodstock on behalf of Sean Tomlinson and Tony Tighe for A$900,000. Agent Guy Mulcaster was underbidder.
