Amazon.Com Has Come a Long Way Since Its Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Jeff Bezos, Envisioned the Company As a Virtual Bookstore
Amazon.com has come a long way since its founder and chief executive officer, Jeff Bezos, envisioned the company as a virtual bookstore. It has evolved into an online retail giant that generated US $74.45 billion in revenues in 2013, much of that coming from its support of more than two million companies that used Amazon to sell their products online and distribute them to customers. Under the company's various programs, Amazon not only provides its customers with a means of advertising and selling their products, but also offers to store those products in its fulfillment centers; pick, pack, and ship them; and provide customer service, including handling returns. Amazon keeps the most popular products in inventory. This gives Amazon an advantage that its rivals find hard to replicate. Manages and ships not only its own inventory but that of other retailers such as Eddie Bauer and Target, giving it an economy of scale that dwarfs its rivals. As it stands, Amazon can currently ship some 10 million products, compared with Walmart's 500,000 In the process of developing its network to support those services, Amazon has built out an infrastructure that by one recent account now includes 145 warehouses around the world (84 in the United States, four in Canada, 29 in Europe, 15 in China, 10 in Japan, and seven in India), which collectively account for more than 40 million square feet of space. Amazon has also has made substantial INVESTMENTS in material handling systems, including the acquisition of Kiva Systems for $775 million in 2012.1 Kiva, now a wholly owned subsidiary of Amazon, designs robots, software, workstations, and other hardware that has been used in the distribution facilities of companies such as Staples, Office Depot, and The Gap. -

Walmart Inc. Takes on Amazon.Com
For the exclusive use of Q. Mays, 2020. 9-718-481 REV: JANUARY 21, 2020 DAVID COLLIS ANDY WU REMBRAND KONING HUAIYI CICI SUN Walmart Inc. Takes on Amazon.com At the start of 2018, Walmart faced critical decisions about its future as e-commerce continued to explode. Walmart just lost its long-held crown as the most valuable retailer in the world to online leader Amazon. With Amazon’s recent acquisition of Whole Foods for $13 billion, Amazon moved aggressively into the offline world to challenge Walmart in its biggest business, grocery. Walmart was not standing still, making moves like buying Jet.com for $3 billion in 2016. While Walmart’s U.S. e- commerce revenues grew to $11.5 billion in 2017, there was no debate in Bentonville, AR: Walmart remained far behind. The question for Walmart CEO Doug McMillon and Walmart.com head Marc Lore was how to respond to its most aggressive competitor ever (Exhibits 1a and 1b).1 Amazon The Early Years (1994–2001) Jeff Bezos founded Amazon in 1994 to exploit the Internet, still a relatively nascent technology. He determined that selling books online was most promising, because the number of titles available was greater than even the largest brick-and-mortar store could stock. Bezos and his wife drove west to start “Earth’s Biggest Bookstore” in Seattle, WA. Amazon offered 1 million titles for sale on its opening day in July 1995. Next year, the company had over 2.5 million book titles for sale, with revenue doubling every quarter (Exhibit 2). -

Connected Stores Deloitte
Transforming store fl eet through technology Retail360 / Connected Stores Transforming store fl eet through technology January 2018 1 Connected Stores Preface You’re about to read the paper ‘Connected Stores: transforming store fl eet through technology’. Inside are the results of a thrilling experiment - a tale we’ll try to do justice to throughout this paper, which is aimed at providing guidance to retailers around the world. We wrote this paper for executives that are interested in retail innovation & technology, specifi cally those who work with brick & mortar stores. It’s been fi ve years since we predicted that digital channels would reshape store footprints. This year, we saw retailers investing to make that happen. This was also the year we reinvented stores as we knew them, opened shops based on data, and used smart technology to generate insights. We did away with ‘black boxes’ where customers went into shops and revenue fl owed out, and said yes to new and exciting store concepts that deliver outstanding experiences. To refl ect on this retail renaissance, we joined forces with PTC (IoT platforms), Monolith (Computer Vision), Impinj (RFID) and NCR Corporation (POS) to create an alliance with enough capabilities to connect stores and learn from the process. We were honoured when Legend World Wide, a Serbian fashion retailer let us use their fl agship store in the high streets of Belgrade, Serbia, as an innovation lab. The experience with Legend World Wide proved invaluable, and everyone benefi ted. The store is now up and running, and we are continuing to learn from it. -
Amazon, E-Commerce, and the New Brand World
AMAZON, E-COMMERCE, AND THE NEW BRAND WORLD by JESSE D’AGOSTINO A THESIS Presented to the Department of Business Administration and the Robert D. Clark Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Arts June 2018 An Abstract of the Thesis of Jesse D’Agostino for the degree of Bachelor of Arts in the Department of Business to be taken June 2018 Amazon, E-commerce, and the New Brand World Approved: _______________________________________ Lynn Kahle This thesis evaluates the impact of e-commerce on brands by analyzing Amazon, the largest e-commerce company in the world. Amazon’s success is dependent on the existence of the brands it carries, yet its business model does not support its longevity. This research covers the history of retail and a description of e-commerce in order to provide a comprehensive understanding of our current retail landscape. The history of Amazon as well as three business analyses, a PESTEL analysis, a Porter’s Five Forces analysis, and a SWOT analysis, are included to establish a cognizance of Amazon as a company. With this knowledge, several aspects of Amazon’s business model are illustrated as potential brand diluting forces. However, an examination of these forces revealed that there are positive effects of each of them as well. The two sided nature of these factors is coined as Amazon’s Collective Intent. After this designation, the Brand Matrix, a business tool, was created in order to mitigate Amazon’s negative influence on both brands and its future. ii Acknowledgements I would like to thank Professor Lynn Kahle, my primary thesis advisor, for guiding me through this process, encouraging me to question the accepted and giving me the confidence to know that I would find my stride over time. -
