When UPA-II returned to power, he was called back from his teaching job in Singapore by the PM with the intention of re-appointing him in an advisory role, but that was apparently axed by unknown people either in the Congress party or in the PMO. Baru thus has an axe to grind, and this book is certainly no hack-job. In his telling, he is the PM's sword and shield in UPA-I, going beyond the call of duty to help him navigate a treacherous world where there is a schemer seemingly behind every door. The way he writes it, even normal politicking and factionalism in the Congress party takes on dark undertones. This makes for good reading, but one wouldn't go so far as to call it a "balanced" view. But in doing so it only confirms the prevailing media narrative of the time, and perhaps that is why it was received so well when it came out in just before the elections. Baru wanted his boss to be something that he was not, that he did not have much intention of being, and that he could not possibly have been considering the circumstances; this is the source of all of Baru's disappointment, and of what he calls a "tragedy". However, once you move away from the central thread, there are a few other more interesting things that are also covered. This may have been unintentional, but in the first few chapters, you get an idea of just how incestuous are the power circles in New Delhi. Everybody seems to know everybody else's dad. To the aam aadmi of suspicious bearing such as oneself, marooned from centres of power, it does tend to look like a pseudo-oligarchy, although a very well-educated one. There are also tidbits about the pushes and pulls of managing a coalition government, and on the various personalities that studded the firmament of UPA-I. One wishes there was more of this. Finally, it is the personality of the PM himself that makes the book worth reading. History, as he once said, will certainly be a kinder judge to him than the media or the media adviser, for that matter. Does this book read like a "thriller"? No, unless all the thrillers you read are political memoirs by economist-editors. Does it present anything new that someone who reads the papers regularly wouldn't know? No, not really. Does the author make judgments and assumptions? But if you enjoy reading about politics, or had an interest in UPA-I, then sure, this will do just fine, if taken with a grain of salt. I had always respect for Dr singh but will never forgive for his silence. Sanjay said he is like Bhishma who is honest man but at wrong side!! A person who do not value truth over his personal liabilty is not correct.. He overcame some and also was overwhelmed by The intrinsic resilience in his character lies hidden beneath his quiet introvert personality. The challenges that he faced as a Prime Minister were awesome. He overcame some and also was overwhelmed by some. His uncompromising personal honesty and ethics were taken advantage of by his own partymen and others. I wish he could be more assertive and direct. A fantastic book by Baru. Reads like a thriller. As both belong to the field of economics, Manmohan Singh as an economist was well known to Sanjaya Baru, but being very close to PM during as his 'eyes and ears' and trusted aide made a powerful impact on Sanjaya Baru about Dr. Singh's image and personality. Singh neither belong to a political background nor won an election, he's been a Rajya Sabha member through his entire life. As an introvert and shy, he lacks public charm and eloquence in public meetings. He is not an extrovert to be confident and good at social situations, doesn't have the support of people as he is a Rajya Sabha member, Congress had formed its first coalition government and Sonia Gandhi is the ultimate boss as she made the government work under the party. Despite all these challenges and troublemakers in the party and in the left, he made India run by its highest growth rate, maintained coalition through the entire tenure and tried hard to improve relations with Pakistan to make borders irrelevant and cleared the nuclear apartheid of India.     MP-IDSA Issue Brief India's Changed Approach to Kashmir Settlement S Kalyanaraman March 30, 2021 Summary Recent positive steps in India-Pakistan relations have led to expectations of a resumption of the discussions that got stalled in 2007. A return to the framework that drove the back-channel negotiations does not, however, appear to be a tenable proposition any longer. The Manmohan-Musharraf initiative was disowned by the Pakistan Establishment after Musharraf's departure. Even if Pakistan were to be keen on reviving that formula, India is unlikely to favour it because of the Modi government's commitment to regain Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir. While this change in Indian policy may lead to the placement of the Kashmir issue on the back burner in the short and medium terms, it is likely to aggravate conflict in the long term. INDIA’S CHANGED APPROACH TO KASHMIR SETTLEMENT India and Pakistan have taken some preliminary steps towards the easing of tensions and resumption of dialogue during the last two months. In early February, Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa called for a resolution of the Kashmir issue in “a dignified and peaceful manner as per the people’s aspirations.”1 In response, the spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs reiterated India’s desire to have “normal neighbourly relations with Pakistan in an environment free of terror, hostility and violence.”2 In late February, the Directors General of Military Operations of the two armies agreed to renew the ceasefire along the Line of Control.3 March 2021 saw Prime Minister Imran Khan and General Bajwa calling for peace and resumption of dialogue while emphasising the importance of India taking the first step and creating a conducive environment especially in Jammu and Kashmir.4 Analysts have, however, expressed scepticism about the prospect of meaningful dialogue.

Poor economic management, scam-ridden Ministers and officials, verbose Ministers not subjected to discipline, very limited and poor communication through media and public speeches, continuing with incompetent Ministers, the list is endless. We have always suspected that the fault lay with the party-government relation that was introduced when Sonia Gandhi stepped down in his favour in 2004. This is now confirmed by Sanjaya Baru's book "The Accidental Prime Minister". It goes some way to confirming a famous comment about Dr Manmohan Singh that he isa ‘better politician than he is an economist’. The Prime Minister's reputation rests on his years as Narasimha Rao's finance Minister, when India turned over a new leaf from licensing to relative freedom for enterprises, a high to a low tax regime, computerization of tax collections, freer imports, and relative welcome to foreign investment. The economy took off and growth tripled in some years from the “Hindu” rate of growth. India became a hot spot for foreign investors. Many Indians, who had gone overseas for better employment, began coming back. But after winning the 2009 elections, the Prime Minister’s actions suggested that he had a bottomless purse in government. It was almost as if he had forgotten the aphorism attributed to him by Sanjaya Baru in his book, that “money does not grow on trees”.
