Mixing historic and contemporary works, it reveals the role played by the Academy in championing the cause of visual arts in Scotland. The Royal Scottish Academy (RSA) and the National Galleries of Scotland (NGS) have collaborated to present a survey of collecting by the academy since its formation in 1826 as the Scottish Academy of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. Ages of Wonder: Scotland’s Art 1540 to Now (4 November 2017-7 January 2018) is curated by RSA President Arthur Watson, RSA Collections Curator Sandy Wood and Honorary Academician Tom Normand. It has spawned a catalogue as well as a volume of fourteen essays, both bearing the same title as the exhibition. The essay collection, edited by Tom Normand, includes chapters on the history of the RSA collections, the buildings on the Mound, artistic discourse in the nineteenth century, teaching at the academy, and Normand’s “James Guthrie and the Invention of the Modern Academy” (pp. 117–34), on the early, complex history of the RSA. Contributors include Duncan Macmillan, John Lowrey, William Brotherston, John Morrison, Helen Smailes, James Holloway, Joanna Soden, Alexander Moffat, Iain Gale, Sandy Wood, and Arthur Watson. -

The CCPSDF set out three key development principles based on reconciling the needs of the historic environment with contemporary users, optimising the site’s potential through retail-led mixed uses and creating a high quality built environment and public realm. It is not for this development brief to repeat these principles but to further develop them to respond to this area of the framework, known as Block 10. 1.2 The purpose of the development brief is to set out the main planning and development principles on which development proposals for the area should be based. Designed by Charles Robert Cockerell in the 1820's on the summit of Calton Hill to house the mortal remains of those who had fallen in the Napoleonic Wars, it ended as an odd ruin with only part of the stylobate, twelve columns and their architrave at the West end completed in its Craigleith stone (fig. -

© Scottish Ecological Design Association - www.seda.uk.net - The Scottish Ecological Design Association is a registered charity: SC020799 Designed by dotrun.co.uk S START WAVERLY STATION Start at Waverley Station and head up Waverley Steps to Princess Street, turn right and head up Calton Hill. 1 CALTON HILL Calton Hill is home the Scottish Government’s offices in St Andrew’s House on the steep southern slope of the hill – the Scottish Parliament Building and other notable buildings (Holyrood Palace) lying near the foot of the hill. The hill is also the location of several iconic monuments and buildings: the National Monument, the Nelson Monument, the Dugald Stewart Monument, the old Royal High School, the Robert Burns Monument, the Political Martyrs’ Monument and the City Observatory. The future of the derelict Old Royal High School is currently under debate. Rival proposals of a hotel by Hoskins Architects and a music school by Richard Murphy Architects have ignited fierce debate. Hopefully one of these proposals will give this impressive building a new lease of life. Collective Architecture has undertaken conservation work on the dome atop Calton Hill, enabling the structure to be opened to the public once again for art exhibitions and performances. The A-listed building is currently home to Collective gallery. From the summit of Calton Hill on a clear day you can see the wind turbines in Fife, contributing to the high percentage of renewable energy generated in Scotland. Also visible is the Scottish Parliament which achieved a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating when it was opened. It is heated by a combined heat and power plant and has 40m2 of solar panels. -
The Principal Time Balls of New Zealand

Email: [email protected] Abstract: Accurate time signals in New Zealand were important for navigation in the Pacific. Time balls at Wellington and Lyttelton were noted in the 1880 Admiralty list of time signals, with later addition of Otago. The time ball service at Wellington started in March 1864 using the first official observatory in New Zealand, but there was no Wellington time ball service during a long period of waterfront redevelopment during the 1880s. The time ball service restarted in November 1888 at a different harbour location. The original mechanical apparatus was used with a new ball, but the system was destroyed by fire in March 1909 and was never replaced. Instead, a time light service was inaugurated in 1912. The service at Lyttelton, near Christchurch, began in December 1876 after construction of the signal station there. It used telegraph signals from Wellington to regulate the time ball. By the end of 1909, it was the only official time ball in New Zealand, providing a service that lasted until 1934. The Lyttelton time ball tower was an iconic landmark in New Zealand that had been carefully restored. Tragically, the tower collapsed in the 2011 earthquakes and aftershocks that devastated Christchurch. An Otago daily time ball service at Port Chalmers, near Dunedin, started in June 1867, initially using local observatory facilities. The service appears to have been discontinued in October 1877, but was re-established in April 1882 as a weekly service, with control by telegraph from Wellington.
