Russell Sage College: The Journey Toward Thriving Abstract In partnership with Russell Sage College (RSC), the following service-learning project outlines our situation analysis, literature review and application plan to implement strategies and resources to enable RSC’s strategic initiative toward becoming a college known for well-being through an initiative called Thrive@Russell Sage. Leveraging research in Positive Psychology, and best practices from other colleges and universities, our team developed a Thrive “playbook” designed to support RSC’s ability to 1) communicate and engage the RSC community 2) expand Thrive through the curriculum beginning with RSC 101, an introductory freshmen course and 3) enhance and expand Thrive through appreciative inquiry. We suggest measuring Thrive@Russell Sage impact through an annual well-being survey of students and faculty and use survey data as input to evolve their strategic plan. -

NINETEENTH-CENTURY NEW YORK CITY: A SPATIAL HISTORY Sophomore seminar – Spring 2017 Weekly seminars – W 10:10-12:00 GIS labs – M 10:30-12:00 Course number: BC3504 Instructor: Prof. Gergely Baics ([email protected]) Office hours: Th 12-2PM ERC fellow: Fatimazohra Koli ([email protected]) Office hours: TBA Course description (short): History of 19th-century New York City with a focus on spatial history. We explore three major themes, including the city’s rapidly changing built environment, its social environment, and urban metabolism. Methodologically, we focus on spatial analysis, especially historical Geographic Information Systems. Course description (long): Thematically, this seminar introduces students to key issues of 19th-century New York City history. We examine the economic, social, and spatial processes that propelled Gotham’s rise from a major Atlantic port to America’s first metropolis, with weekly readings focusing on three consecutive themes: the city’s rapidly changing built environment, its social environment, and basic metabolic functions that sustained residents. Methodologically, we approach each of these themes through the lens of spatial historical analysis, interrogating how the physical and social geography of 19th-century New York transformed under the pressures of modern urbanization. The class therefore includes a significant methodological component: in addition to weekly seminars, students attend four lab sessions at the Empirical Reasoning Center (ERC) to learn basic methods of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) mapping. Assignments focus on acquiring essential GIS skills and performing spatial historical analysis. As their final project, students write an original research paper with a significant mapping component. Prerequisites: None Learning objectives: Students who complete this class will be able to: 1) Demonstrate a well-rounded understanding of the key problems and debates of 19th- century New York City history. -

Built 1912-13; penthouse addition 1922-23; Annex built 1930-31; Grosvenor Atterbury, architect; John A. Tompkins II, associate architect, Annex; second-story sculpture panels 1922-26, modeled by Rene Chambellan. Landmark Site: Borough of Manhattan Tax Map Block 877, Lot 74. On April 25, 2000, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark of the Russell Sage Foundation Building and Annex and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site (Item No. 3). The hearing had been duly advertised in accordance with the provisions oflaw. Five people spoke in favor of designation, including representatives of the building's owner, the Historic Districts Council, Community Board 6, and Gramercy Neighborhood Associates, Inc. In addition, the Commission received a letter in support of designation from the Twenty-second Street East Block Association. Summary The Russell Sage Foundation Building was constructed in 1912-13 for the foundation established in 1907 with an unprecedented ten million dollar bequest of Olivia Sage, one of the world's wealthiest and most important philanthropic women. These funds, applied "to the improvement of social and living conditions in the United States of America," made it one of the leading reform social service organizations of the Progressive era. Mrs. Sage wanted a suitable headquarters that would also serve as a memorial to her husband Russ(dl. Architect Grosvenor Atterbury's elegant design was inspired by the sixteenth-century Florentine palazzo but adapted to a twentieth-century office building. -
