If you are not familiar already with Paramus, our community has much to offer. Here are a few quick facts about the Borough: Paramus has more than 26,00 residents across approximately 8,692 households. The Borough is composed of residential subdivisions, three shop- ping malls, restaurants, and office spaces. Paramus features 4 recreational parks, two libraries, a municipal pool, a golf course, and two tennis courts. Only 17 miles from New York City, Paramus is conveniently located along Route 4, Route 17, and the Garden State Parkway. Paramus includes a public school district made up on five elementary schools, two middle schools, and one high school. Sincerely, Mayor Richard LaBarbiera A Quick Snapshot History Demographics The native Lenni Lenape Indians gave 2010 Census Information: Paramus its name. It comes from the : 10.52 square miles Lenape word “peramsepuss” sometimes Borough Size translated as “land of the wild turkeys” or Population: 26,137 “fertile fields where turkeys are found.” Households: 8,692 The earliest recorded pioneers in Paramus Median Household Income: $113,853 included Jacob Epke Banta 1686, Isaac Van Mean Income: $147,400\ Saun 1695, and Albert Zabriskie 1702. Females: 14,002 General George Washington was a frequent traveler through Paramus during the Males: 13,236 American Revolution. The Library of Median Age: 44.6 Congress exhibits thirty letters George Washington wrote headed “Headquarters Paramus.” Although Paramus was mainly a farming community, it had at least two mills of record before 1945.
