A Guide to Teaching and Talking About War with Books for Children and Teens Use this guide to teach to the Common Core State Standards— see details throughout! A Guide to Teaching and Talking About War with Books for Children and Teens War has existed since the beginning of recorded history. Countless histories, novels, plays, and movies have dealt with war. Young people cannot avoid finding out about war, either through these and other sources or, in some cases, from direct experience. The challenge for parents and teachers is to introduce the topic of war to children and teens in a way that is responsible, honest, and appropriate to their age and level of understanding. Many young people absorb only a few dates and facts with little understanding of the causes of war, the realities of the battlefield, or the devastating consequences for the lives of civilians in war-torn nations. They may need help understanding or dealing with the impact of war on family members whose loved ones leave for long periods of deployment and sometimes never return. The books on this list—fiction, fact, or fantasy—can help young readers explore these many difficult issues according to their age and level of understanding. Whether you’re studying a particular historical period in the classroom, or sitting at the kitchen table with your family, we hope this guide will provide useful ideas for learning, discussion, and understanding. The discussion questions in this guide support teaching to the following Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts. • The Underland Chronicles
DISCUSSION GUIDE Grades 3–7 THE UNDERLAND CHRONICLES By #1 New York Times Bestselling Author of The Hunger Games SUZANNE COLLINS Gregor hadn’t planned to fall into another world, or to tumble into an adventure, or to become a hero. But when he follows his little sister through a grate in the laundry room of their New York City apartment building, he hurtles into the dark Underland where humans live uneasily beside giant spiders, bats, cockroaches, and rats. There, the fragile peace is about to fall apart, and Gregor discovers that a prophecy foretells a role for him in the Underland’s future. Little does he know that his quest will change him—and the Underland—forever. Discussion Questions for Book One: Gregor the Overlander 1. Gregor’s life isn’t as easy or as happy as it used to be since his father disappeared. How has his life changed? Do you think these challenges in any way prepared him for his quest in the Underland? 2. In the beginning of the story, Gregor believes his father will be back, but he has created a rule for himself that prohibits him from thinking about a future that includes his father. Why? How might this aid him in his quest? Does Gregor ever break his own rule? 3. What are some of the descriptions in the book that show how the Underlanders have adapted to their new environment? How do the adaptations help them survive? What might happen to them if they came back to the Overland? 4. The Underlanders see Gregor as the great warrior told of in the Prophecy of Gray, and because of that he is to lead the quest to prevent their annihilation.

He ran his fingers over the bumps and resisted the impulse to let out a primal caveman scream. It was building up in his chest, that long gutteral howl reserved for real emergencies -- like when you ran into a saber-toothed tiger without your club, or your fire went out during the Ice Age. He even went so far as to open his mouth and take a deep breath before he banged his head back into the screen with a quiet sound of frustration. "Ergh." What was the point, anyway? It wouldn't change one thing. Not the heat, not the boredom, not the endless space of summer laid out before him. He considered waking up Boots, his two-year-old sister, just for a little distraction, but he let her sleep. At least she was cool in the air-conditioned bedroom she shared with their seven-year-old sister, Lizzie, and their grandma.

  • Suntrap Book Review
Suntrap Book Review Underland: a Deep Time Journey Written by Robert MacFarlane Published by Penguin Books p/b £10.99 Age range: Adult Description Ten years in the making, Underland is an enthralling record of journeys deep into the worlds beneath our feet. From the burial grounds of the Mendip Hills to the hidden catacombs of Paris, and further, to the deep blue, ancient ice of Greenland, Macfarlane explores - through myth, memory and experience – our most feared and venerated spaces of loss, discovery and deep time. Blending personal memoir, travelogue and nature writing, infused with a powerful ability to read the essential messages about our changing planet and our place within it embedded in the very ground we walk upon, Underland is an astonishing and unforgettable book. Written with lyricism, power and prescience, it brings together the ancient and the urgent in a revelatory examination of an unseen and essential netherworld. Reviews New York Times “100 Notable Books of the Year”; NPR “Favourite Books of 2019”; Guardian “100 Best Books of the 21st Century”; Winner of the National Outdoor Book Award; Winner of the Wainwright Prize 2019; Winner of the Stanford Dolman Travel Book of the Year Award 2020 'You'd be crazy not to read this book' The Sunday Times 'Every book by Macfarlane since his first has felt less like a new start than the natural extension of a growing landscape. With Underland, it expands downwards to take in barrows, caves, tunnels and catacombs. The experience is, as always, exhilarating and a little terrifying.' - The Daily Telegraph 'There are some simply wonderful chapters here, combining natural and human history, a love of places and names…' - The Times 'Underland is an epic and occasionally portentous descent into a series of underground and underwater landscapes' - The Financial Times 'Macfarlane has invented a new kind of book, really a new genre entirely' - The Irish Times 'He is the great nature writer, and nature poet, of this generation' - The Wall Street Journal .
