Meath • Ireland ASSUMPTION 2016 A Letter from Father Prior DEAR FRIENDS OF SILVERSTREAM PRIORY, AM THRILLED to announce that, thanks to your generous support, on June 22nd, 2016, after four years of hardship and hope, of prayer and of work, we finally concluded the purchase of Silverstream Priory. The acquisition of Silverstream, of its I buildings, and of the surrounding fifteen acres of fields and woods, allows us to live in the stability that Bene- dictine life requires. For all of this we are jubilantly grateful. Work on the monastic buildings is going forward. Very soon we shall have completed Phase One of the extensive works undertaken to adapt the buildings to our way of life, while making it safe and efficient: eleven new monastic cells. Those friends of Silverstream who are able to offer the clothing of the cost of one monastic cell enjoy the privilege of naming brother cassian that cell after the saint of their choice. Two cells have al- maria aylward ready been given and have been named by their donors in honour of Saint Joseph and Saint Thérèse. Once we have raised the required funds, Phase Two of the works will be the renovation of the stone cat- tle-shed — our own little “Bethlehem” (Hebrew: House of Bread”) — into an oratory fitting for“ ,םֶחֶל תיֵּב the solemn choral praise of God, the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, and the adoration of the living Bread come down from heaven (John 6:51). -

Gregorian chant and spiritual meaning in a [In the countenance of the angels shall I sing praises unto you.] secular world Fabian Lochner Introduction Gregorian chant is a vast and extraordinary repertoire of devotional song, mostly in Latin, used for centuries in the formal liturgical wor- ship of Christian faith communities all over medieval Western Europe.1 1 There are few introductory-level publications on Gregorian chant for the musical practitioner and the ones available have some notable limitations. In the UK, The RSCM Guide to Plainchant (RSCM 2015) provides a starting point. Its American counterpart, Beginners Guide to Singing Gregorian Chant Notation, Rhythm and Solfeggio (Jones 2010) is of rather less value. TheRSCM Guide offers a chant primer by Dr Mary Berry (reprinted unchanged from a 1979 RSCM publication), supple- mented by an Anthology of Plainchant by John Rowlands-Pritchard which includes welcome transcriptions of chants from English sources but omits any reference to early chant notations (neums) and their rhythmic interpretation, pioneered by Dom Eugène Cardine (1970/1981). Rembert Herbert (1999), on pp. 63–93 contains a very accessible general introduction to chant and its history and much 350 Fabian Lochner Gregorian chant remains officially the ‘special music’ of the Catholic Church.2 However, the liturgical practice of Latin chant, as a full annual cycle of daily worship, is now limited to very few, mostly monastic, communities.3 Meanwhile, millions of ordinary people are drawn to listening to chant recordings in the privacy of their homes for reasons not necessarily else of value, to be discussed later in this chapter. -

The NPM staff has worked hard to reduce expenses in order to hold down costs for members. This year’s report shows overall expenses to be $40,000 lower than in 2005, the year of our last national convention. Over the past few years I have been impressed and moved by the generosity of NPM members in their personal and financial support. Thanks to member gifts in 2007, the Association was able this year to provide sixteen undergraduate and graduate students with more than $34,000 in scholarship funds for the coming academic year. Members showed strong support for the work of the Association by contributing more than $50,000 to the 2007 NPM Annual Fund—more than in From the President any previous year. The numbers, of course, tell only part of the story. The real measure of NPM is in the ministry of its Dear Members, members—the musicians, clergy, liturgists, and other leaders who serve the Church at prayer. -

Meath • Ireland MARCH 2016 A Letter from Father Prior DEAR FRIENDS OF SILVERSTREAM PRIORY, HE MID-POINT of Holy Lent will have passed by the time you receive this issue of In Cnaculo. Ever since Ash Wednesday, we have, as Saint Bene- dict writes in Chapter 49 of the Holy Rule, been T awaiting Holy Easter with the joy of spiritual longing. Our monastic family will have more than doubled with the arrival of two postulants, one from Australia and one from America, and of three men, two from Northern Ireland and one from Poland, for the required initial 90 day period of prayer and work. The surge in vocations imposes some concrete changes. The present temporary Oratory that we arranged in two rooms of the main house is now too small to accommodate everyone. We have decided to renovate a stone cattle shed to be used as our Oratory until such time as the projected monastic church becomes a reality. Monastic cells have to be readied for the new men. Both projects are in the gifted hands of our architect Adrian Buckley. The work will in- clude new electrical wiring, new plumbing, and the replace- ment of windows and doors. In a new endeavour of remunerative work, we have inau- gurated the Cenacle Press. Our first book publication is a Way of the Cross for Priests. At the beginning of Lent a compli- mentary copy was sent to all the bishops of Ireland and to the priests of the diocese of Meath. -

P. * I This dissertation is an examination and analysis oE the earliest known sources of Domini,can Mass chants, the process by'which these were edited, and the style of the chant which resulted. To accomplish this, three closely u related chant traditions are studied and compared with the chant of other traditions: the Cistercian chant as edited 9 under Bernard of Clairvaux, the pre-1244 edition of Dominican chant, and the Dominican chant reformed under Numbert of Romans and completed in 1256. By examining the musical ,principles which guided the editors in their work and the cultural and religious pre-suppositions which underlay these principles, the author seeks to gain insight into the editorial process and what that process can reveal about the aesthetic sense of the age in which it is found. By examining early Cistercian and Dominican legislative documents the autho,r provides a brief history of the reforms and the spirit which underlay them. -
