bothwell regional health center W ELCOME TO SEDALIA Sedalia Missouri is a community with many assets. Specifi cally, the assets that have made and will continue to make this a very sustainable community, are related but not limited to these entities: diverse industries and employment opportunities, strong public and private educational sources, engaged city and county governments and very active community organizations. But then we come to what I feel is the most admirable asset to the City of Sedalia, MO … THE PEOPLE! In a very un-selfi sh manner, the residents continue to donate their time and money to sustaining and improving the city and providing an excellent place to raise a family, conduct business and provide many ways to enjoy life. What is the Chamber of Commerce’s role in all of this? The Chamber of Commerce should work to bring a variety of opportunities to the city and work well with Economic Development to reinforce why businesses need to consider the City of Sedalia as the right place to open up shop. Finally, sustaining and continually providing value to our existing Chamber of Commerce members is crucially important and a priority of the Chamber of Commerce Board. Supporting all of our existing Chamber members is very important, as they are investing every day into their businesses and we need to continue to support them and spread the word that Sedalia, MO is a great place to come and shop. I am very proud to have been elected as the President of the Chamber of Commerce for Sedalia, MO. The Chamber Board is made up of great community leaders and I am looking forward to working alongside them to support the City in accomplishing all of our collective goals. On November 30, 1857, he gave the area the name Sedville, after his daughter Sarah, familiarly known as “Sed”. He changed the name to Sedalia, following the suggestion of a friend for the sake of euphony. For nearly a century, Sedalia’s economy was tied to the railroads, both the Missouri Pacifi c and the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad lines. The Missouri-Kansas & Texas Railroad was most widely known as the “KATY”, from its “K-T” stock exchange code. Sedalia was an important railhead for the massive Texas cattle drive of 1866 and maintained stockyards to receive cattle from drives and shipping through much of the 19th century. From 1866-1874, it was a railhead terminus for cattle drives and stockyards. By the end of the 19th century, the MK&T had numerous buildings and a wide variety of workers in the city. The fi rst Boy Scout Troop in Missouri, and one of the fi rst Boy Scout Troops in America was formed in Sedalia in 1909 by an Englishman, a year before the Boy Scouts of America was offi cially chartered. At the same time, the town established schools for both white and black children, churches, and other civic amenities. Sedalia grew at a rapid pace with the rough energy of its travelers and cowboys. Today the “KATY Trail” is the nickname of the 240-mile-trail following the railroad right-of-way through much of Missouri. It is used by bikers, walkers, and horseback riders. This has been the largest in the nation among the late 20th-century federal and state “Rails to Trails” projects. The Sedalia Area Chamber of Commerce has its offi ces in the newly redone yet still historic Katy Depot. Sedalia will always have a great history and a bright future. Our Chamber works with our amazing business leaders and upcoming professionals to promote growth and development
