The most significant of these is James Hammond starting as our Administrative and Development Officer. I am sure that James will contribute significantly to the growth and development of rowing. He can be contacted on his mobile (0421404510) or at [email protected] James’ first task has been to call for nominations for selectors, coaches and rowers for the ACT Youth Cup crews. Further information is on the RACT website (http://www.rowingact.org.au/). The notice includes a call for a nomination for a Chair of Selectors whose role is to build an ACT team culture, and to provide the principal contact for ACT Youth and Senior athletes and the RACT committee. The appointee will drive the squad preparation and training through the winter and the local season through his/her coordination of the ACT’s Youth and Senior representative squad coaches. Tenure is preferable for a period of 2‐3 years. The appointment of a Chair of Selectors follows on from consultation with coaches, athletes and clubs led by Sarah Cook, the ACT member of the RA Athlete’s Commission, and Olympic rower. I thank Sarah for her efforts in coordinating the review of the ACT state representative crews at the 2011 Inter‐State Regatta. Another major change for the Association is that the RACT Office returns to Sports House at 100 Maitland Street Hackett. We are grateful to ACTSport, and ACT Croquet for offering to share their office with RACT. Sports House has good facilities for meetings, and also provides an opportunity to network with other sports. At the completion of the summer season, I would like to thank all our Boat Race Officials for their substantial contribution. The BROs had to manage regattas following the loss of the buoyed course, and this was challenging. I congratulate them on helping us have a very good season. The innovation that we trialed on regatta days with reverse traffic flow was a success. I have received many positive reviews of this change, and thank all of you for that feedback. We will be adopting reverse traffic flows for all regattas in the future. The season was also a success with limited disruption due to windy weather or blue green algae. Hopefully these environmental challenges will not jeopardize the viability of our sport as they have recently. Looking forward; various Masters’ crews are training for both the NSW and National Masters’ Regattas, and we in the ACT host the Winter Time Trials (WTT) across the Winter and Spring Months. The dates for a couple of these WTT events have changed to avoid clashes with other regattas so check the RACT Calendar to confirm you have the correct dates in your diary. Enjoy your training, and see you on the water. David Bagnall Congratulations to Nick Barnier, Angus Moore, Amy Fowler anD Sarah Cook who have just been participating in the National Selection Trials in SyDney. They have all been selecteD to be in Australian crews. Nick has been selecteD in the UnDer 23 Men’s quaD scull, Angus in the UnDer 23 Men’s CoxeD Eight anD Amy in the UnDer 23 Women’s QuaD Scull to contest the 2011 WorlD UnDer 23 Championships in AmsterDam, The NetherlanDs. Sarah will be representing Australian in the Women’s QuaD Scull at the 2011 WorlD Championships – the top 7 crews qualiFy For the 2012 Olympics. We wish you luck! 3 Rowing ACT April 2011 Interview with Sarah Cook Sarah Cook is excited to be rowing in the Australian Women's Quad Scull at the World Championships in Bled, Slovenia. Although this is the first time that Sarah has been selected in a sculling boat in the Senior A team, she has been a member of the various Australian sweep crews over the previous seven seasons. Although the initial transition from sweep to sculling was challenging, Sarah is looking forward to the quad, a boat that she believes that she is physiologically suited to. The crew includes International medalists Brooke Pratley and Sally Keogh, and is stroked by the stroke of the National Champion Women's Quad, Amy Ives. Sarah observed that when the crew boated last Friday for their first ever row together, they had good combination. They posted one of the top prognostic times of all the various potential Australian crews on that first row at the National Selection Trials. When in Australia, the crew will principally train in Canberra, under coach Jason Lane, from South Australia. The crew will have an extended 3 month European tour that will include competition at the Henley Royal Regatta in England (June 29– July 3) and World Cup 3 in Lucerne, Switzerland (July 8–10), before attending a training camp at the Australian Institute of Sport’s European Training Centre in Varese, Italy ahead of the 2011 World Rowing Championships. RaDForD College Schoolboy QuaD Scull March ACTSport Konica Team Sportstar oF the Month The Radford College Quad Scull have been awarded the hotly contested ACTSport Team sportstar of the Month for March. ‘The Crew of Kieren Northam, Luke Letcher, Alex Stutchbery, Jordan Davies and Coxswain Marni Mount has been undefeated in 2011, winning not only the National Champion Schoolboy Quad Scull of Australia in Adelaide in March, but also the NSW, the ACT, the Independent Schools and the NSW Rowing Association Head of the River Championships against the very best rowers of their ages across the country. Radford are the undisputed best Australian school crew in the quad scull and have won all of their races in the quad by a clear margin’. http://actsport.com.au/index.php?id=18&tx_ttnews[tt_news]=24&tx_ttnews[backPid] =1&cHash=9415968833 4 Rowing ACT April 2011 Black Mountain Rowing Club held an end of the season celebration and recognition of the efforts of the BROs and those repairing and maintaining the course (Buoy Boys‐ right).
