We minister to Orthodox Christians of all backgrounds. Holy Communion is a sign of our full unity of faith. Therefore, only Baptized and Confirmed Orthodox Christians who have prepared themselves through prayer and Sacramental Confession may partake of this Sacrament. However, all are wel- come to partake of the Blessed Bread of Fellowship and receive a Priest blessing at the end of the Divine Liturgy. RESURRECTIONAL APOLYTIKION (TONE TWO) When Thou didst submit Thyself unto death, O Thou deathless and immortal One, then Thou didst destroy hell with Thy Godly power. And when Thou didst raise the dead from beneath the earth, all the powers of Heaven did cry aloud unto Thee: O Christ, Thou giver of life, glory to Thee. APOLYTIKION OF THE HOLY FATHERS (TONE EIGHT) Thou, O Christ, art our God of exceeding praise Who didst establish our Holy Fathers as luminous stars upon earth, and through them didst guide us unto the true Faith, O most merciful One, glory to Thee. TROPARION OF ST. GEORGE (TONE FOUR) As the deliverer of captives and defender of the poor, healer of the infirm and champion of kings, victorious great mar- tyr George intercede with Christ our God for our souls salvation. KONTAKION FOR ORDINARY SUNDAYS (TONE FOUR) O Undisputed intercessor of Christians, the mediatrix unrejected by the Creator, turn not away from the voice of our petitions, though we be sinners. Come to us in time, who cry to thee in faith, with assistance; for thou art good. Has- ten to us with intercessions O Theotokos, who dost ever intercede for those who honor thee. THE EPISTLE (For the Holy Fathers) Blessed art Thou, O Lord, the God of our Fathers. For Thou art just in all that Thou hast done for us. The Reading from the Epistle of St. Paul to St. Titus. (3:8-15) Titus, my son, the saying is sure. I desire you to insist on these things, so that those who have be- lieved in God may be careful to apply themselves to good deeds; these are excellent and profitable to men. But avoid stupid controversies, genealogies, dissensions, and quarrels over the law, for they are unprofitable and futile. As for a man who is factious, after admonishing him once or twice, have nothing more to do with him, knowing that such a person is perverted and sinful; he is self-condemned. When I send Artemas or Ty- chicus to you, do your best to come to me at Nicopolis, for I have decided to spend the winter there. Do your best to speed Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their way; see that they lack nothing. And let our people learn to apply themselves to good deeds, so as to help cases of urgent need, and not to be unfruitful. All who are with me send greetings to you. Greet those who love us in the faith. Grace be with you all. Amen. THE GOSPEL (For the Holy Fathers) The Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew. (5:14-19) The Lord said to His Disciples: “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hid. Nor do men light a lamp and put it under a bushel, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and give glo- ry to your Father Who is in heaven. Think not that I have come to abolish the law and the proph- ets; I have come not to abolish them, but to fulfill them. For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the law until all is accomplished. The Russian Orthodox Church has published several statements, including the patriar- chal message from Patriarch Kirill to Patriarch John X available here. Pope Francis of the Roman Catholic Church prayed for the release of the metropolitans, as announced here. The Archdiocese is grateful for these and all other ongoing efforts for the sake of Archbishop Paul and Archbish- op John, and all our brothers and sisters suffering in the region.     The Plainchant of the Byzantine Catholic Church Week 2: Chant in the early Church; Byzantine Chant Byzantine Catholic Seminary, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Instructor: Deacon Jeffrey Mierzejewski Spring 2017 The Church’s inheritance from Judaism The Christian Church was a new way of life, born into a Hellenistic (i.e. culturally Greek) world. But much of its cultural inheritance came from Judaism: • Regular prayer; ritual remembrances; weekly and annual cycles; feasts and fasts • From the Temple: – Sacrifices; formal liturgy and ceremonial; choral singing • From the synagogue: – Scriptural reading, preaching, and meditation; communal prayer • combined with a ritual meal, derived from the Passover, which became the Church’s thanksgiving ritual: the Eucharist But with the destruction of the Temple, the temple ritual never became a strong part of the initial Christian tradition. Instead, Jewish forms of prayer, and the sacred writings – especially the Psalms – remained central to Christian practice. The Jewish singing tradition The Old Testament is full of references to music, both vocal and instrumental. But in the first century, instrumental music disappeared from Jewish tradition. - destruction of the Temple - association of certain instruments with pagan rituals The Hebrew language includes a rich vocabulary for vocal music, and Jewish ceremonial included both antiphonal and responsorial singing. Scholars have found music still in use in certain corners of the Christian world (particularly Armenia) which seem to indicate the existence of a coherent tradition of singing (“cantillation”) which was passed on from Jewish cantors into Christian use. These melodies often involved patterns consisting of: an initial intonation to the melody or phrase chanted recitation on a fixed pitch a conclusion or cadence that ended each phrase This musical tradition also included long passages on a single word or syllable, called melismas.

He is and always will be! ا ! آ ون! ا، 14 ز 2019 Sunday of the Fathers of the First Six Ecumenical Councils The historic Churches of the first centuries, many of which were founded by one of the apostles or their co-workers, emphasized that the Church is the Body of Christ, an organic unity of Head and mem- bers. Like St Paul, these Churches saw unity as a chief mark of the Church and an important part of their mission “ endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all ” (Ephesians 4:3-6). Still, the first centuries saw a number of teachers with competing doctrines arise in the Church. When they were not accepted by the leaders of a local Church, these teachers or their followers formed there own rival groups. In some places these groups became more popular than the historic Church. Arians, for example, were prominent in Constantinople through much of the fourth century and in much of the West through the fifth. When Emperor Constantine accepted Christ and recognized the Church as an important structure in his empire, he faced the rivalry between these groups. In his quest for a strong and united Church, he called the first Ecumenical Council as a vehicle for unifying the teaching and practices of the empire.
