As at Porbandar, so here, there and South Africa is hardly anything to note about my studies. I could only have been a mediocre student.’ MOHANDAS KARAMCHAND GANDHI 1869–1914 EARLY YEARS IN INDIA, ENGLAND AND SOUTH AFRICA FOURTH SON FROM HIS FATHER’S FOURTH WIFE Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on 2 October 1869 at Porbandar in western India. He was the youngest of four siblings. When asked about his mother, he would say: ‘Te outstanding impression my mother has lef on my memory is that of saintliness. To keep two or three consecutive fasts was nothing to her. During another Chaturmas (holy period), she vowed not to have food without seeing the sun. We children on those days would stand, staring at the sky, waiting to announce the appearance of the sun to our mother. And I remember days when, at his sudden appearance, we would rush and announce it to her. She would run out to see with her own eyes, but by that time the fugitive sun would be gone, thus depriving her of her meal. “Tat does not matter,” she would say cheerfully, “God did not want me to eat today.” And then she would return to her round of duties.’ 1869 Lef: Gandhi’s mother Putlibai (1839–1891) was a religious woman.

  • Mahatma Gandhi Father of Nation
Mukt Shabd Journal ISSN NO : 2347-3150 MAHATMA GANDHI FATHER OF NATION Prof. Sanjay Shamrao Waghmare Librarian, Late Baburao Patil College Hingoli [email protected] Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on 2 October 1869 into an Indian Gujrati Hindu Modh Baniy aFamily in Porbandar (also known as Sudamapuri), a coastal town on the Kathiawar Peninsula and then part of the small princely state of Porbandar in the Kathiawar Agency of the Indian Empire. His father, Karamchand Uttamchand Gandhi (1822–1885), served as the diwan (chief minister) of Porbandar state. Although he only had an elementary education and had previously been a clerk in the state administration, Karamchand proved a capable chief minister. During his tenure, On 2 October 1869, Putlibai gave birth to her last child, Mohandas, in a dark, windowless ground-floor room of the Gandhi family residence in Porbandar city. As a child, Gandhi was described by his sister Raliat as "restless as mercury, either playing or roaming about. One of his favourite pastimes was twisting dogs' ears." The Indian classics, especially the stories of Shravana and king Harishchandra, had a great impact on Gandhi in his childhood. In his autobiography, he admits that they left an indelible impression on his mind. He writes: "It haunted me and I must have acted Harishchandra to myself times without number." Gandhi's early self-identification with truth and love as supreme values is traceable to these epic characters. The family's religious background was eclectic. Gandhi's father Karamchand was Hindu and his mother Putlibai was from a Pranami Vaishnava Hindu family.

  • Mahatma Gandhi As a Student
Mahatma Gandhi as a student Compiled and Edited by: J. M. Upadhyaya Published by: The Director Publications Division Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, Government of India, Patiala House New Delhi 110 001, India. © Publication Division Mahatma Gandhi as a student FOREWORD So much has already been said about Mahatma Gandhi and yet there remains so much more to be said about him. The Mahatma’s life and work were all embracing; there was not an activity of our national or social life which remained untouched by him. Whilst we have a number of books which give adequate accounts of Gandhiji’s social and political work, I think there is little information about his childhood and early youth. After all the Mahatma that Gandhi became in later life was a child like many other children and it is interesting to find out what environment and influences were responsible for moulding him. It is from this point of view that I read the page proofs of this book. The author seems to have taken great pains and I do hope his book will be widely read and appreciated. Zakin Hussain New Delhi January 15, 1965 www.mkgandhi.org Page 2 Mahatma Gandhi as a student INTRODUCTORY Gandhiji, it has been well said, could fashion heroes out of common clay. His first and, undoubtedly, his most successful experiment was with himself. This booklet is a modest, attempt to present a detailed and documented account of the student career of Gandhiji who set himself down as "a mediocre student". It covers the period of his childhood, adolescence and early youth and is based on authentic records.
