Nick Clarke is Lecturer in Human Geography at the University of Southampton. His research focuses on globalization as it relates to sense of self, place and responsibility.
Clive Barnett is Reader in Human Geography at the Open University. His books include
Spaces of Democracy: Perspectives on Citizenship, Participation and Representation
(London: Sage, 2004), edited with Murray Low; and Culture and Democracy: Media,
Space and Representation (Edinburgh: Edinburgh University Press, 2003).
Paul Cloke is Professor of Human Geography at the University of Exeter. He is Founder
Editor of Journal of Rural Studies . His books include International Perspectives on Rural
Homelessness (London: Routledge, 2006), edited with Paul Milbourne; Handbook of
Rural Studies (London: Sage, 2005), edited with Terry Marsden and Patrick Mooney; and
Spaces of Geographical Thought (London: Sage, 2005), edited with Ron Johnston.
Alice Malpass is Research Associate of the Academic Unit of Primary Health Care at the
University of Bristol. She has a background in social anthropology. She has research interests in care, health, feminism and feminist approaches, and qualitative methods.

2 Abstract
This paper situates the analysis of fair trade consumption in the context of debates about civic activism and political participation. It argues that fair trade consumption should be understood as a political phenomenon which, through the mediating action of organizations and campaigns, makes claims upon states, corporations and institutions.
This argument is made by way of a case study of Traidcraft, a key player in the fair trade movement in the United Kingdom. The study focuses on how Traidcraft approaches and enrolls its supporters, and how these supporters understand their own consumption and other practices.
3 1. ALTERNATIVE ECONOMIC SPACES, NEW SPACES OF PUBLIC ACTION
Academic and activist discourses of capitalist globalization and rampant neoliberalism have provoked increasing interest in the economic and political potential of various ‘alternative economic spaces’.1 This includes research on the growth of ethical finance, alternative food networks, the social economy, and alternative trading systems. 2
