In the main assessment of this group Sattler (1967) reported only > species for Siberia ( Ethmia cirrhocnemia (Lederer , 1870) and E. nigripedella (Erschoff , 77)), and one species for Primorye (E. septempunctata (Christoph , 1877)). Later ample terial of the Zoological Institute (St.-Petersburg) was studied by A. S. Danilevsky and K. Zagulajev . As a result, a series of papers was published which included data on Asian ssia (Zagulajev , 1975,1981; Danilevsky , 1975,1980), and the number of species known m Siberia increased to eight species. One more species has been described from the Altai Kostjuk (1980). Recently a guide to the Ethmiidae species of the Russian Far East has sn published (Sinev , 1997), in which E. maracandica (Rebel , 1912) was reported for the t time for Siberia, and E. angarensis Caradja , 1939 for Southern Primorye. is report is based on rather abundant material of this group kept in the Siberian Zoological iseum, Institute of Animal Systematics and Ecology, Siberian Division of Russian ademy of Sciences (Novosibirsk). Its study (together with a review of the so far published ©Ges. zur Förderung d. Erforschung von Insektenwanderungen e.V. München, download unter www.zobodat.at the Magadan and Amur Regions, and the Khabarovskii and Primorskii (= Primorye) Prov inces. 8 species are reported for this territory for the first time. 2 species are new for the Mongolian People’s Republic. Below follows an annotated list of species. 1. Ethmia vittalbella (Christoph , 1877) A species widely ranging in arid zones of the Palearctic: in N Africa, SW and Central Asia, Transcaucasia, Iran, Afghanistan, N Pakistan, NW China (Kuldja (= Gulja) region), Kazakh stan, and also in the southern and south-eastern European part of the former USSR (Dani levsky , 1980). P. Y a . Ustjuzhanin found it also among the collections (preserved on cotton wool) of V. N. Kuznetsov from Southern Primorye. A very slight probability of label confusion cannot be excluded in this case. Material. 1 9, Primorye, Chuguevka district, headwater of the Sokolovka River, at light, 12.VIII.1984 (Kuznetsov leg.). 2. Ethmia duodecia (Haworth , [1828]) Earlier this species was known from the moderate and southern parts of West Europe, Asia Minor, Iran, the former USSR: in Sw, S, and E European part, Caucasus, Transcaucasia, and W Kazakhstan (Danilevsky , 1980; Zagulajev , 1981). Here this species is for the first time reported for Siberia, for the south-eastern part of the West Siberian Lowland (the upper Ob’ basin), the Altai Mts., and S Transbaikalia. The moths were collected from mid June to late July. Material. Novosibirsk Province: 1 9, vil. Yarkovo, SW of Novosibirsk, 24.VII.1963 (Korshunov leg.); 1 d , Novosibirsk vicinity, Academy Town, “Vostok” gardens, at light, 13.VII.1992 (Zint- shenko leg.); 1 9, vil. Chingisy, south part of Novosibirsk storage lake, at light, 26.VI.1972 (anonym leg.); Altaiskii Krai: 1 9, vil. Soldatovo, left bank of the Ob’ River, 100km S of Bar naul, 12.VI.1990 (Vasilenko leg.); Altai Republic: 2 99. Lake Teletskoe, 21.VII.1987 (Ustjuz hanin leg.); 1 9. the Chulyshman River, 13.VII.1987 (Ustjuzhanin leg.); Chita Province: 1 9, Sokhondo Nature Reserve, kordon Agutsa on the Agutsa River, at light, 24.VI.1991 (Dubato - lov et Zintshenko leg.). 3. Ethmia angarensis Caradja , 1939 Reported for South Primorye by Sinev (1997). Earlier this species, in spite of its misleading name, was known only from the Chinese province Shanxi (Sattler , 1967). The moths fly in late June to July only. Absent from our material. 4. Ethmia septempunctata (Christoph , 1882) The species was described from Vladivostik and in Russia is so far only known for S Primo rye. Besides, it inhabits Japan (Moriuti, 1982). Flies from the end of May until the middle of July. Material. Primorye: 3 d d , Khasan district, Far Eastern Marine Nature Reserve, Furugelm Island, 6 ., 12., 15.VII.1975 (Velizhanin leg.). 162 ©Ges. zur Förderung d. Erforschung von Insektenwanderungen e.V. München, download unter www.zobodat.at 5. Ethmia funerella (Fabricius , 1787) A species widely distributed from W Europe to the Caucasus, E Kazakhstan (Lake Zaisan) and Middle Asia. According to Danilevsky (1980) and Zagulajev (1981), it inhabits almost the entire European part of the former USSR, including the Kola Peninsula (Khibin Mts.). Reported for the first time for Siberia: in the southern part of the West Siberian Lowland and the NE Altai Mts. The moths fly from middle June to late July. Material. Novosibirsk Province: 1 d, Novosibirsk Power Station town, 1.VII.1995 (Ustjuz - hanin leg.); 1 d, Novosibirsk vicinity, vil. Ogurtsovo, 27.VI.1986 (Ustjuzhanin leg.); Kemerovo Province: 2 dd, Gornaya Shoria, vil. Osman, 1 .VII. 1992 (Ustjuzhanin , Kuzovleva et Mirosh - nikov leg.); Altai Republic: 1 9, vil. Dudko leg.). 6. Ethmia pusiella (Linnaeus , 1758) According to Danilevsky (1980) this is a transpalearctic species ranging in W Europe, Asia Minor, the Caucasus, Transcaucasia, E Kazakhstan, Mongolia, the European part of the USSR north to the Khibin Mts. (Kola Peninusla) (Zagulajev , 1981), and also in W Siberia. Unfortunately, its distribution in W Siberia was not specified. According to our data, here it ranges everywhere from the forest-steppe zone north to the southern taiga zone (Tomsk surroundings), and also in the Altai Mts (including its Kazakhstan part). For the first time it is found in S Primorye, being collected simultaneously with E. vittalbella (Chr.) (mentioned above). The moths fly in July-August. Material. SYSTEMATICS OF THE MEGADIVERSE SUPERFAMILY GELECHIOIDEA (INSECTA: LEPIDOPTEA) DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for The Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Sibyl Rae Bucheli, M.S. ***** The Ohio State University 2005 Dissertation Committee: Approved by Dr. John W. Wenzel, Advisor Dr. Daniel Herms Dr. Hans Klompen _________________________________ Dr. Steven C. Passoa Advisor Graduate Program in Entomology ABSTRACT The phylogenetics, systematics, taxonomy, and biology of Gelechioidea (Insecta: Lepidoptera) are investigated. This superfamily is probably the second largest in all of Lepidoptera, and it remains one of the least well known. Taxonomy of Gelechioidea has been unstable historically, and definitions vary at the family and subfamily levels. In Chapters Two and Three, I review the taxonomy of Gelechioidea and characters that have been important, with attention to what characters or terms were used by different authors. I revise the coding of characters that are already in the literature, and provide new data as well. Chapter Four provides the first phylogenetic analysis of Gelechioidea to include molecular data. I combine novel DNA sequence data from Cytochrome oxidase I and II with morphological matrices for exemplar species. The results challenge current concepts of Gelechioidea, suggesting that traditional morphological characters that have united taxa may not be homologous structures and are in need of further investigation. Resolution of this problem will require more detailed analysis and more thorough characterization of certain lineages. To begin this task, I conduct in Chapter Five an in- depth study of morphological evolution, host-plant selection, and geographical distribution of a medium-sized genus Depressaria Haworth (Depressariinae), larvae of ii which generally feed on plants in the families Asteraceae and Apiaceae.

Project Update: June 2013 The Monte Iberia plateau at the Alejandro de Humboldt National Park (AHNP) was visited in April and June of 2013. A total of 152 butterflies and moths grouped in 22 families were recorded. In total, 31 species of butterflies belonging to five families were observed, all but two new records to area (see list below). Six species and 12 subspecies are Cuban endemics, including five endemics restricted to the Nipe-Sagua- Baracoa. In total, 108 species of moths belonging to 17 families were registered, including 25 endemic species of which five inhabit exclusively the NSB Mountains (see list below). In total, 52 butterflies and endemic moth species were photographed to be included in a guide of butterflies and endemic moths inhabiting Monte Iberia. Vegetation types sampled were the evergreen forests, rainforest, and charrascals (scrub on serpentine soil) at both north and southern slopes of Monte Iberia plateau Sixteen butterfly species were observed in transects. Park authorities were contacted in preparation on a workshop to capacitate park staff. How to use the Atlas The Atlas has two map sections The Main Section shows the location of Russia’s intact forest landscapes. The Thematic Section shows their tree species composition in two different ways. The legend is placed at the beginning of each set of maps. If you are looking for an area near a town or village Go to the Index on page 153 and find the alphabetical list of settlements by English name. The Cyrillic name is also given along with the map page number and coordinates (latitude and longitude) where it can be found. Capitals of regions and districts (raiony) are listed along with many other settlements, but only in the vicinity of intact forest landscapes. The reader should not expect to see a city like Moscow listed. Villages that are insufficiently known or very small are not listed and appear on the map only as nameless dots. If you are looking for an administrative region Go to the Index on page 185 and find the list of administrative regions. The numbers refer to the map on the inside back cover. Having found the region on this map, the reader will know which index map to use to search further. If you are looking for the big picture Go to the overview map on page 35. This map shows all of Russia’s Intact Forest Landscapes, along with the borders and Roman numerals of the five index maps. If you are looking for a certain part of Russia Find the appropriate index map. These show the borders of the detailed maps for different parts of the country.

Regional Teaching Course 5-7 July, 2012 Novosibirsk, Russia Local Teaching Course organizer: Pavel Pilipenko, Prof., MD, PhD Department of Clinical Neurology Faculty of Postgraduate Education Novosibirsk State Medical University Krasny Prospect, 52 630091 Novosibirsk Russia 5-7 July, 2012 we had the second successful Teaching Course of EFNS in Novosibirsk! Registration desk The Teaching Course brought together leading neurologists of Germany, Russia, Greece, Czech Republic, Italy and Austria. More than 300 physicians were registered! - and that's just only part of our participants, because we did not perform registration during the scientific sessions (despite the fact that we were expecting only 150 members, but in Siberia scientific events of such a high level are rare, and the opportunity to participate in the international conferences for physicians is very limited, so the Siberian doctors were very interested in participating in the RTC of the EFNS). Participants and local translator. Physicians from Siberia came from: Voronezh, Novosibirsk, Barnaul, Ob, Barabinsk, Berdsk, Suzun, Toguchin, Nizhnevartovsk, Tomsk, Omsk, Kemerovo, Tatar, Iskitim, Kargath, Linevo, Cherepanovo, Novokuznetsk, Krivodanovka. Every day more than 200 people registered. At the end of the third day, which was a warm summer day (that is very rare for Siberia!!) we had more than 120 people, that indicated the interest of physicians in obtaining new knowledge. Welcoming remarks were made by the rector of Novosibirsk State Medical University - Prof. I.O. Marinkin and Prof. P. Kalvach - representative of the EFNS, and the Head of the local TC Committee – Prof. PI Pilipenko. They emphasized the practical significance and the importance of such training courses, with possible discussions and exchange of experiences.

  • Microlepidoptera Palearctica
262 JOURNAL OF THE LEPIDOPTERISTS' SOCIETY BOOK REVIEWS MICROLEPlDOPTERA PALEAHCTICA; VOLUME 2. ETHMlIDAE, by Klaus Sattler. George Fromme & Co., Vienna. In two vols., text xvi + 185 p.; plates, 9 color 97 black & white, each with unnumbered expl. page facing. D ec., 1967. Subscription price: 1,160 Austrian schilling; full price: 1,365 Austrian shilling (about $58.00). [text in German]. This, the second contribution of the ambitious project which plans to systematically treat and illustrate in color all microlepidoptera of the Palearctic Region, follows the same format set forth in Volume 1, the Crambidac, by the late Stanislaw Blezynski, in 1965. Principles of the project are explained in the forward to Volume 1 (see J. Lepid. Soc., 19: 117-125,1965). The treatment of the Gelechioid family Ethmiidae is taxonomically and mechanically accurate and concise throughout. It indudes introductory parts dealing with histori cal development and associated problems in handling material and literature, technical aspects of the work, explanation of taxonomic characters, early stages and bionomics, especially foodplants, and the systematic placement of the family. The systematic portion encompasses 72 species in the genus Ethmia in addition to 4 species of uncertain placement and 4 species transferred to other taxa. In synonymizing other previously described genera, Sattler displays a sensible respect for the appreciation of problems of higher category taxonomy on a world basis. He issues a warning that questions of genera should not be answered on the basis of limited knowledge of only the European or other fauna; and he points out that introduction of new generic names inevitably implies distinctions which may not in reality exist.

  • A New Florida Ethmia Moth (Lepidoptera: Oecophoridae)
Vol. 2 No. 1 1991 HEPPNER: Florida Ethmia 69 TROPICAL LEPIDOPTERA, 2(1): 69-72 A NEW FLORIDA ETHMIA MOTH (LEPIDOPTERA: OECOPHORIDAE) J. B. HEPPNER1 Florida State Collection of Arthropods Bureau of Entomology, DPI, FDACS, P.O. Box 147100, Gainesville, FL 32614, USA ABSTRACT.- Ethmia kutisi, new species, is described from north Florida. The new species is closely related to the more widespread species, Ethmia longimaculella (Chambers). The Florida Ethmia fauna now totals 9 species. KEY WORDS: Boraginaceae, distribution, Ethmia kutisi n. sp., Ethmiinae, West Indies. Following the monographic work on New World Ethmiinae by Powell (1973), a subtropical species of Ethmia was discovered in the Florida Keys and described as Ethmia powelli (Heppner, 1988). More recently two additional West Indian species of Ethmia have been discovered in south Florida by T. S. Dickel and L. C. Dow: Ethmia abraxasella Clarissa Busck and Ethmia submissa Busck. The Florida ethmiine fauna, thus, has 8 primarily tropical species, and with the new species described below, totals 9 species of Ethmia. Only Ethmia trifurcella (Chambers) and the new species are more northerly components of the Florida Ethmia fauna, the remainder being Florida endem- ics related to West Indian species or are more widely distributed in the Caribbean. Ethmia kutisi Heppner, new sp. Diagnosis.- This new species closely resembles Ethmia longima- culella (Chambers) and usually can be distinguished by its heavier black forewing markings which tend to merge together, forming a dense network of spots and lines. Genitalia show distinctions for separating the species from E. longimaculella. Description.- Forewing length: 7.9-9.6mm &, 7.3-9.0mm ?.
