Sequential extraction procedure was employed in sediment samples for the geochemical partitioning of the metals. Total trace metal content in water and sediment samples were analyzed and compared with different standard and reference values. Concentration of total chromium, lead, cadmium, zinc, copper, nickel, cobalt and arsenic in water samples were greatly exceeded the toxicity reference values in both season. Concentration of chromium, lead, copper and nickel in sediment samples were mostly higher than that of severe effect level values, at which the sediment is considered heavily polluted. On average 72 % chromium, 92 % lead, 88 % zinc, 73 % copper, 63 % nickel and 68 % of total cobalt were associated with the first three labile sequential extraction phases, which portion is readily bioavailable and might be associated with frequent negative biological effects. -

DAMOLE Research Associate and EBEL WICKRAMANAYAKE Associate Professor Regional & Rural Development Planning Human Settlements Development Program School of Environment, Resources and Development Asian Institute of Technology Bangkok, Thailand Introduction Although, Bangladesh is subjected to perpetual floods every year, she suffered two of the most serious and devastating floods on record in 1987 and 1988 which lasted from later part of August to first part of September. Vast areas of the country including the Capital City of Dhaka with a population of about 4.8 million were flooded to an unprecedented degree with flood levels 1.5 m higher than normal for periods up to four weeks. In Dhaka City, it is estimated that about 200 sq km (77 per cent of the total area of 260 sq km) was submerged to depths ranging from 0.3 m to over 4.5 m (FAP 8B, 1991). About 2.4 million people (50 per cent of the city population) were directly affected by these floods. Conservative estimates of the floods suggest that loss due to annual flood is about TkI 250 milhon, and the damages to a 10-year (return period) flood and a 40-year (return period) flood are Tk 530 million and Tk 750 million, respectively (Bangladesh Water Development Board, Undated). Following the floods of 1988 the Government of Bangladesh (GOB) established a National Flood Protection Committee in October 1988 which proposed to build a system comprising of embankments and flood walls around Dhaka City to protect the intrusion of flood water from the surrounding rivers and drain out the internal water caused by rainfall. -

Food System Planning Case No. 2 March 2021 Bangkok City Farm Program: promoting urban agriculture through networks Roof garden on top of Laksi District Office Administration building Cabannes, 2019 The case study1 has been put together by the Dhaka Food System project, with support by the Kingdom of the Netherlands, and in association with the Bangladesh Institute of Planners. The case studies provide relevant international references to stakeholders, to inform how to best integrate food system considerations into urban planning. Introduction: what is this case about? The Bangkok City Farm Program, publicly funded, has provided support over the last ten years to a broad spectrum of urban agriculture related local activities. Its implementation through a network of partners institutions and coordinated by a lean staffed Thailand Sustainable Agriculture Foundation (http://sathai.org, Thai Language only), has permitted reaching out and supporting hundreds of grassroots, through small financial award, training and awareness raising activities. One of its uniqueness lies in its quite high cost / benefit ratio, high level of efficiency, capacity to raise urban agriculture profile on the city and national agenda and strengthening urban farmers resilience in cases of floods or COVID, facilitating their access to nutritious food. As such, it might be a brilliant example for Bangladesh food champions to consider. 1. Context: Bangkok urban and food challenges Quite Similar to Dhaka where rivers are part of the city life, wealth and threats, Bangkok’ Chao Praya river remains a source of life and nourishment and central to development of agricultural sector. Another aspect shared by both capitals refers to very extremely population density: respectively: inner Bangkok 3662 pp/km2 and 1542 for BMA compared to 28 600 pp/km2 for Dhaka). -

At present the delta building process is active in the Meghna Estuary. Information on sediment dispersal processes in the estuary and their response to different exogenic and anthropogenic forces is an important requirement for managing the sediment and developing adaptive measures to counter the potential impact of climate change. Historical maps, satellite images and tidal water level data were analysed and the response of the Meghna Estuary to extreme events, e.g. the 1950 Assam earthquake, as well as anthropogenic interventions, was assessed. The issue of sediment management was addressed, based on an understanding of the response of the estuary to the extreme natural event and anthropogenic interventions, along with an assessment of the response of the estuary to sea level rise. Among other interventions, emphasis has been directed to promoting vertical accretion by injecting sediment into polders. Steel, Committee Member Shahinur Bashar, Author 2 Abstract The Rohingya community have faced continuous violence, discrimination and statelessness in the Rakhine State of Myanmar. In 2017, a violent crackdown by Myanmar’s army on Rohingya Muslims sent almost a million fleeing across the border of Bangladesh. They found their temporary home in the refugee camps of Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh – now the largest refugee camp in the world. As a result of the sudden influx to Cox’s Bazar, a hotspot of enriched bio-diversity, the area is facing severe challenges to maintain the natural ecosystem. Regions like Teknaf, with a wildlife sanctuary of about 11,615 ha are now almost deserted. This paper aims to describe the major environmental effects of the Rohingya refugee influx including: deforestation, severe water scarcity and pollution, wildlife habitat loss, fragmentation, and destruction, poor management of solid and human waste, improper drainage systems, air pollution, surface water pollution, etc. Moreover, the paper seeks to analyze the policies, practices and role of the host-community government to mitigate the effects. While there are notable successful projects, like the Refugee, Relief and Repatriation Commission (RRRC) providing liquefied petroleum gas (LPGs) to meet energy needs of the Rohingya, impacts to biodiversity continues to be affected by lack of usable water and wildlife destruction. -

Necessity and Relevance of JBIC’s Assistance 1. Present state and issues facing the railway sector in Bangladesh In Bangladesh, projects in the railway sector require more time and funds to bear fruit than do projects in the road and other sectors. For this and other reasons, the government of Bangladesh has scarcely made any new investments in railway development since independence in the 1970s. Consequently, virtually all railway facilities and equipment now in use were developed during the British colonial period (up to 1947). Indeed, they have become so old and decrepit that they are unable to fully capitalize on the railway’s inherent strengths – massive, rapid, punctual, safe, and environment friendly – resulting in reduced transportation volume, poorer service and a smaller role for the railway in the overall transport sector. In parallel with the robust GDP growth (5–6%) in recent years, demand for freight transportation has steadily increased by 5–6% annually in Bangladesh, showing particularly rapid growth in the demand for transport in the Dhaka–Chittagong section, connecting Dhaka, the capital city and political and economic hub of the country, and Chittagong, the second largest city and industrial hub with the country’s largest seaport. Since 2001, the amount of cargo handled at the port of Chittagong has been increasing by more than 10% annually, but if the port facilities are expanded and enough private companies are attracted to the Export Processing Zone (EPZ), the demand for transport in the Dhaka–Chittagong section can be expected to increase even further. -

Through this exhibition, we supported the Year of Water initiative as observed by the Government of Karnataka. It also featured H2O Today, a popular traveling exhibition by the Smithsonian Institution. We encouraged visitors to explore the collective experiences of water and refIect on future challenges through a range of dynamic exhibits and workshops. We presented 15 exhibits spread across three floors of Bangalore International Centre, which examined the role of water in our lives, beyond the value that we derive from it. These exhibits were brought to life through 45 connected programmes such as workshops, lectures, master classes, film screenings and musical performances. Participants engaged with the latest research and thinking on water, and examined its cultural significance, by interacting with scholars and artists from around the world. We also provoked them to begin a dialogue on water as an urgent concern for the city of Bengaluru, and global challenge of the Anthropocene. Ice Painting by Dorota Borowa. -

Since early sixties, of necessity, industries of various kinds started to spring up slowly. It appears in a survey that ecological imbalance is being caused continuously due to discharge of various industrial wastes into air and water bodies. It has also been found that the intensity of pollution caused by the factories and industrial units depend on their type, location, raw materials, chemical effects, production process and discharge of gaseous, liquid and solid pollutants to the natural environment. All of Bangladesh's sewage and industrial wastes are flushed directly into Ganges and Brahmaputra Rivers. There are wide spread fears that as the region develops in industrial infrastructure, industrial pollution will accelerate, compounding the problems posed by raw municipal wastes. About 900 polluting industries in Bangladesh dispose of untreated industrial wastes directly into rivers, although the effluents contain 10 to 100 times the allowable levels permissible for human health. The Ganges-Brahmaputra delta is the largest delta in the world and the rivers contribute one-third of the global sediment transport to the world oceans. The rivers flow through 10 per cent global population and carry untreated rural, urban, municipal and industrial wastes to the Bay of Bengal.
