The three-fold increase in the total num- ber of species covered in the current compilation is the result of both a larger study area and a recent increase in published ontogenetic studies of fishes by many authors and students of the morphology of early stages of marine fishes. It is a tribute to the efforts of those authors that the ontogeny of greater than 70% of species known from the western North Atlantic Ocean is now well described. HASTINGS1 SYNOPSIS: The establishment of the fish fauna on a new jetty at East Pass at the mouth of Choctawhatchee Bay, Okaloosa County, Florida, was studied from June, 1968, to January, 1971. Important components of the jetty fauna during its initial stages of development were: (a) original residents that exhibit some attraction to reef habitats, including some sand-beach inhabitants, several pelagic species, and a few ubiquitous estuarine species; and (b) reef fishes originating from permanent populations on offshore reefs. -

The series is also available on CD-Rom. CCC fish and coral species lists 1. INTRODUCTION Between 1986 and 1998, Coral Cay Conservation (CCC) provided data and technical assistance to the Belize Department of Fisheries, Coastal Zone Management Unit and Coastal Zone Management Project under the remit of a Memorandum of Understanding. This work has provided data for seven proposed or established marine protected areas at South Water Cay, Bacalar Chico, Sapodilla Cays, Snake Cays, Laughing Bird Cay, Caye Caulker and Turneffe Atoll (Figure 1). These projects have generally provided habitat maps, the associated databases and management recommendations to assist reserve planning. In addition to the data collection, training, capacity building and environmental education undertaken by CCC, the expeditions have also provided opportunities for compiling presence / absence species lists of fish and corals in the different project areas. This document contains the fish list compiled by CCC staff and experienced volunteers and a reprint of Fenner (1999) detailing coral taxonomy in Belize and Cozumel, the Belize component of which was compiled while the author was working as a member of CCC’s field science staff. -

However, little is known about the impact of multi-gear artisanal and recreational fisheries on the structure of local reef fish communities in Brazil. Fishing activities around a Brazilian coastal island were monitored while reef fish density was censused during underwater surveys (UVC). The links between frequency of capture, intensity at which species are wished and UVC density were explored. Species were classified according to their frequency of capture as regular, occasional and rare, and classified according to the intensity at which they are wished (based on size and price), as highly targeted, average and non-targeted species. Ninety-seven species were caught by fishing, the majority of them being either rarely caught or non-targeted. Nineteen species were highly targeted but rarely caught. The highly targeted species showed extremely low density in the UVC. These results put in question the sustainability of the local fishing activities. The predominance of non-targeted species in the catches and in the reefs environment studied supports the expectation that these species will be more and more captured, thus collaborating to further change the structure of the reef community. -

Río Jamapa, C.P. 94290, Boca del Río, Veracruz, México E-mail: [email protected] Abstract The Indo-west Pacific damselfish Neopomacentrus cyanomos was first recorded in the West Atlantic in 2013, when it was found to be common on reefs near Coatzacoalcos, in the extreme southwest corner Gulf of Mexico. During 2014–2015, this species also was found on reefs farther afield in that area, but not in the northwest Gulf, nor the north-eastern tip of the Yucatan peninsula. These data, and information from public databases on invasive reef fishes, indicate that N. cyanomos currently is widely distributed in, but restricted to, the southwest Gulf of Mexico. Mitochondrial DNA barcodes of N. cyanomos from that area match to those for this species from its natural range, but do not indicate the ultimate origin of the Gulf of Mexico fish. Possible modes of introduction to the Gulf of Mexico and the potential for its further spread with negative effects on the native reef-fish fauna are discussed, and directions for future research suggested. -
