Heritage of Mysore Division
HERITAGE OF MYSORE DIVISION - Mysore, Mandya, Hassan, Chickmagalur, Kodagu, Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Chamarajanagar Districts. Prepared by: Dr. J.V.Gayathri, Deputy Director, Arcaheology, Museums and Heritage Department, Palace Complex, Mysore 570 001. Phone:0821-2424671. The rule of Kadambas, the Chalukyas, Gangas, Rashtrakutas, Hoysalas, Vijayanagar rulers, the Bahamanis of Gulbarga and Bidar, Adilshahis of Bijapur, Mysore Wodeyars, the Keladi rulers, Haider Ali and Tipu Sultan and the rule of British Commissioners have left behind Forts, Magnificient Palaces, Temples, Mosques, Churches and beautiful works of art and architecture in Karnataka. The fauna and flora, the National parks, the animal and bird sanctuaries provide a sight of wild animals like elephants, tigers, bisons, deers, black bucks, peacocks and many species in their natural habitat. A rich variety of flora like: aromatic sandalwood, pipal and banyan trees are abundantly available in the State. The river Cauvery, Tunga, Krishna, Kapila – enrich the soil of the land and contribute to the State’s agricultural prosperity. The water falls created by the rivers are a feast to the eyes of the outlookers. Historical bakground: Karnataka is a land with rich historical past. It has many pre-historic sites and most of them are in the river valleys. The pre-historic culture of Karnataka is quite distinct from the pre- historic culture of North India, which may be compared with that existed in Africa. 1 Parts of Karnataka were subject to the rule of the Nandas, Mauryas and the Shatavahanas; Chandragupta Maurya (either Chandragupta I or Sannati Chandragupta Asoka’s grandson) is believed to have visited Sravanabelagola and spent his last years in this place. -
SVL): Preserving a 100 Year Old Family Legacy
1 Sadvaidyasala Private Limited (SVL): Preserving a 100 year Old Family Legacy Sadvaidyasala Pvt Ltd (SVL) is one of the oldest concerns manufacturing Ayurvedic medicines in Karnataka. As on 2014, it manufactures over 200 classical and proprietary Ayurvedic preparations. The company was established by Sri. B.V. Pundit (Bhishagratna Ayurveda Vidwan) in 1913 at Nanjangud, a small town near Mysore in Karnataka. In 2014, this 100 year old family owned business is managed by the third generation family members (Refer to Exhibit 1 for details about SVL family). Nanjangud is a town in Mysore district in the Indian state of Karnataka. It lies on the banks of the river Kapila (Kabini), 23 km from the city of Mysore. Rajesh Sreenivasan (3rd Generation Family Member of Pundit Family) shared with great pride – Nanjangud is famous for three things: Srikanteshwara Temple a special variety of banana called Nanjanagoodu rasabale; and Nanjangud Tooth Powder (SVL’s flagship product) The Srikanteshwara Temple at Nanjangud is dedicated to the Hindu supreme deity Shiva, also called Sri Nanjundeshwara, ("The Lord who drank poison") to save the earth. In Hindu mythology, the Gods and demons churned the ocean in search of the ambrosia. During this churning, poison emanated first, followed by ambrosia. To prevent the poison from spreading across the universe, Shiva drank it. His consort Parvati then held his throat tightly to prevent the poison from spreading to the rest of his body. The poison remained in his throat, making it blue in colour. For this reason, Shiva is also called Neelakantha, or "the blue-throated one". -

Growth of Bharatanatyam During the Anti-Nautch Movement of Colonial Era, Through the Famous Gurus & Their Banis
IOSR Journal Of Humanities And Social Science (IOSR-JHSS) Volume 23, Issue 5, Ver. 2 (May. 2018) PP 43-51 e-ISSN: 2279-0837, p-ISSN: 2279-0845. www.iosrjournals.org Growth of Bharatanatyam During The Anti-Nautch Movement of Colonial Era, Through The Famous Gurus & Their Banis. Bindu S. Rao (Doctoral Student of PhD program in Dance, University of Mysore, India) Corresponding Author: Bindu S. Rao Abstract :„Bharatanatyam‟ is the most revered classical dance forms of India. It is one of the most studied, respected, depicted, researched, performed and practiced Art today. It has reached it‟s peak form, with great masters, performers and researchers leaving no stone unturned in taking it further.Bharatanatyam fell into Oblivion during the British Raj, just like other ancient Indian techniques like the Yoga, the Ayurveda, Sanskrit, the Gurukul education and much more. Most of the evils of the Hindu way of life were glorified excessively, like the Sati system, the devadasi system, the caste system, the cultures and traditions, Untouchability, the native couture etc. Yoga was considered evil too. Bharatanatyam was mis-understood as Nautch, performed by the degraded class. Most of them who educated in English, and read English literature, were ashamed of their own religious existence. They wanted to get rid off anything that could bring dis-repute, including Bharatanatyam, which they believed was Sadir, a dance of the devadasis. The Anti-Nautch movement started in the late 19th century swept the Southern part of India for about 40 years, and it is believed that dance went into Hibernation, and was revived in the year 1932 and later by the efforts from famous revivalists of the likes of E Krishna Iyer, Rukmini Devi Arundale, V Raghavan and more.
