Away the 4s and 5s go down fighting in close defeats at Lyonians and South Bank respectively. In the game of the day the 7s turned over previously unbeaten Civil Service 7s with a Jonny Q ‘perfect’ hat trick to take them top. So good the game merited two match reports. Table below. POS . Another home game for the 2’s against a historically strong Nottsborough side saw OWs start strongly. Within the first 10 minutes the 2’s were one up thanks to some gritty play in the middle and a neat through ball from Jon Howe which found Demo with only the keeper to beat. After looping the ball over the last man, Tom Dicko Dixon did his best to try nick the goal off Demo heading the ball in from less than one yard out. Nottsborough then began to bring the game to OW’s and started to exploit opportunities down the flanks. The fullback found some joy and after riding about 4 challenges stuck it straight in the stanchion against a helpless Powley, a feat he’d probably never be able to replicate again. The pressure continued and a corner resulted in another Nottsborough goal. A devilish delivery was met by the Notts centre back which was then dubiously put in with a helping hand from their striker a la Maradona. T he second half saw another neat goal which was cut back from the wing and finished nicely on the edge of the box, 3-1 Notts. The remainder of the game saw OWs have large amounts of possession, but ultimately weren’t able to convert. The final whistle sounded, questions about management resurfaced and musings about whether who would last longer George or Solskjaer found there way into the clubhouse. Azza fights another week at least.

The 4xi played their first game since December 7th as a strong squad made the long journey to Harrow for the Old Boys Cup Quarter Final against Old Lyonians. The home side have been sweeping everyone aside thus far this season (including several double figure drubbings) and we knew that it was going to be tough proposition before kick off. On an excellent pitch the game started with really high tempo with both teams playing great football. It was clear why Lyonians have been destroying teams as they attacked with lightening pace and had several players who could clearly play at a much higher level and we were grateful to Dan Sellman in midfield who had a game long battle with their number 10 who was really hurting us time and again (they have met before playing for both clubs respective 1s). For all their skill the first goal came from a simple error from Moniz at the back, who misjudged a long ball over the top, not what we needed, 1-0. We picked ourselves up and immediately hit back when we caught them out and James STRIDE finished well on his return from a year out with a knee injury. They once again took the lead with an excellent goal from 25 yards out that we couldn't really have done much about. With almost the last kick of the half we made it 2-2 when excellent work from Rand on the left was coolly slotted home by O'CALLAGHAN. Lyonians now knew that we wouldn't be brushed aside and we started to believe that we could get something from the game as the chat at half time reflected. The second half followed much the same pattern of the first with the game end to end and both teams playing some excellent football. We went behind again when their striker nicked in ahead of Amankwah to nod the ball home. Once again we equalised with the best goal of the game. A flowing team move followed by a great turn by Stride and a fantastic finish from GORE brought the game level once again. We had several chances to take the lead in the following few minutes in our best spell of the game. Unfortunately we couldn't quite taken them and conceded again with another decent goal from Lyonians. As we pushed forward in the last 10 minutes to find another equaliser we began to tire and unfortunately got caught on the break again to make it 5-3 as we tired. There was still time for us to get another when STRIDE finished another Rand cross and set up a frantic last couple of minutes but we couldn't' quite pull of the Houdini act again. A great game enjoyed by all, sometimes you just come up against a better team but everyone but in a massive shift and we at least we won in clubhouse as we were the last men standing. Back to league action as we look to catch up our games in hand starting next week. K. Amankwah, J Moniz, C Charman, E Adams, D Strong, D Sellman, T O'Callaghan, J Small, R Rand, J Stride, M Gore, J Breen, W Bennett MotM: James Stride 7s v Civil Service 7s Away Won 3 – 2 Match Report 1

Forget Fury vs. Joshua, Batman vs. Superman, Alien vs. Predator, this was the big one. This was a top of the table clash that may well go a long way to decide the title race. A Wilson’s side on a good run of form against a juggernaut of a Civil Service side unbeaten in the league and crushing all before them. We knew they had two players who were playing well below their level; one a skinny little who could pass like Scholes and knuckleball a free kick like Ronaldo and a man mountain of a no. 10 with tattooed quads who had power, pace and no little skill. We were decimated with injuries but what we did have was guts, passion, determination and an undying desire to fight for every ball. The game started at a whirlwind pace with Civil Service having the best of the early exchanges. A powerful run and a pin point pass from tattoo man put through their centre forward and within ten minutes we were one nil down. Some lesser teams would have buckled but not the 7’s, they are built of stronger stuff. We raised our game, we battled harder and within a few minutes of the restart the tide began to turn. Like a scene from ‘300’ we began to push and gain ground. A beautifully flighted free kick from Chris Dyki found the unmarked old man Jonny Q who calmly nodded home to draw the sides level. The 7’s could taste blood and wanted more. A perfectly weighted pass from Dan Lineker found the octogenarian Jonny Q who managed to control the ball, beat one player and then slot home with such aplomb that his attacking partner Stan Sherlock, who he played with for a whole season last year, could only look at him with incredulity. Still the 7’s pushed on and with Stan on the left and Madz on the right a third goal was not far off. And so it was to be, a marauding run by Madz and another lovely cross found the bus pass carrying Jonny Q who completed the perfect hat trick; head, foot, hand. We went into the halftime team talk 3-1 up. The second half was a real war of attrition with Civil Service attacking and the 7’s defending, mopping up and probing whenever they could. A second goal gave the opposition some hope but when Saj Phakey made a match winning goal line clearance they knew it wasn’t going to be their day. When the final whistle blew and victory was assured the 7’s walked off the pitch feeling just that little bit taller and with a real sense of pride in themselves. In my 73 years of playing football I have never known a hat trick scorer to receive no MOM votes. It could mean that he’s an unpopular old bastard but I would rather believe that the quality from the rest of the team was so great that he just didn’t deserve it. I would just like to point out a few of the best performers who graced the pitch yesterday; Doug Forbes, Aaron, Kenny, Dan, Saj, Merv, Dyki, Stan, Madz, Leyton, Chibu, Kevin and Mirresh.

MOM: Saj Phakey 7s v Civil Service 7s, so good we get two match reports..

“It’s not the team with the best players that win. It’s the players with the best team that wins”! Old Wilsonians 7XI mounted a stunning comeback that epitomised the never giving up mentality ending the unbeaten league run of Civil Service by winning the top of the table clash by 3 goals to two. At the beginning of the day, the race for the title was tight with 3 points separating the top 3. There was cheers in which the game got moved to the top pitches to mark the occasion. The two best teams in the league going at it. For OW 7XI it was simple; Beat Civil Service to go top of the league. Both teams named strong line ups in which an array of talent on show. The game started thick and fast with both teams retaining possession. The referee clearly left his glasses at home as he awarded questionable fouls against the OW’s. Civil Service took the lead in which their striker managed to run through on goal, successfully rounding the keeper to give his side the lead. Once the goal went in Old Wilsonians started to play some exceptional football, some of the best football I’ve seen this season, going close with Madieson’s effort going over the bar. We continued to find pockets of spaces and we eventually got our award when Chris Dyki’s free kick was headed in by Jonny Q (No surprise there) to make it 1-1. Both teams went in search to reclaim the lead with both teams attacking and defending superbly. The referee ruled out Chris Dyki’s excellent goal for offside which didn’t sit well with the home fans. Minutes later Kenny released Jonny Q down the left-hand side in which he rolled the clocks back by cutting in superbly and beating the keeper at the near post to give Old Wilsonians the lead. We continued to pile pressure on the opposition, and it worked as Chibu’s pass to Madieson released him down the right-hand side crossed it exceptionally for Jonny Q to nod in for his hattrick to make it 3-1 before halftime. An excellent team talk at half time from Aaron Steel allowed us to calm down and focus on seeing the game out. We made some changes in the second half to allow everyone to get some game time. Everything was going smooth until Kenny managed to irk the referee who sent him to the sin bin. Civil Service managed to get a free kick just a few yards from our box. The ball floated in with their player managing to get a touch to bring themselves back in the game. We managed to ride out their waves of attacks with us counterattacking in the process. With us time wasting and with Chris Dyki on the touchline providing some elite shit housery on the touchline only managed to annoy the opposition more. Civil Service poured more men forward which resulted in more defending from us especially Saj’s goal line clearance. The referee blew for the final whistle, Civil Service 7’s finally beaten for the first time this season. Wilsonians 7’s celebrated knowing that we just cleared a massive hurdle in the race for the title. Actonian’s 8’s lost at home to Old Blues which means that Old Wilsonians 7’s go back to the top of the tree with a game in hand. All in all, a fantastic weekend for the 7XI. An early kick off and the honour of playing on Hayes, we fancied our chances coming into this game. However, several late arrivals meant we didn't start with our strongest team, and it really showed in the opening exchanges. Goalkeeping and defensive errors meant we were 5 goals down in the blink of an eye, City of London scoring with almost every attempt. Things improved once Terrell Wells (finally) arrived, and we were able to hang onto the ball. In the second half, with the arrival of the (very late) Sochi, we had some pace up front and were able to cause problems, A quick break led to the ball falling for Adam Benwell, who finished expertly. Not long after, Terrell was fouled just inside the box, and converted the penalty himself. We continued to concede but at least made a game of it in the second half. We need to be switched on from the start!

A welcome return to the big flat pitches in front of the club at Hayes saw the 8th's take on a City of London XI although I'm not sure exactly which XI as clearly this was not their regular team and certainly not the one foundering towards the bottom of the table! The writing was on the wall from the start and numerous breaks with pace and multiple options down the flanks which were far to quick for us saw the opposition up 3+ goals before we even had got going and this was not helped by a couple of our key players turning up very late and joining the game with this kind of deficit. The breaks and runs continued into the 2nd half and a fair bit of unnecessary showboating from the opposition got under the skin of some our players and with a few scuffles and stoppages the game ended with us managing 2 goals, one of which was a penalty and the City of London side possibly making it into double figures. Grahame Nelson Pictures by Viktoriya Pintyak Super Vets v Cudham Sun 5/1 Lost 0 -7

Back at Hayes after a Xmas break. Our team was relatively strong and we thought we had half a chance against a well drilled Cudham side. (Oh dear, Ed) That’s the way it seemed up to 33 minutes with both teams playing good football but neutralising each other out. Then our keeper failed to hold on to a 30 yard drive , which is unlike Chunk who has great hands. The second Cudham goal was well finished but our 6 players in the box failed to attack the ball. So 0-2 down at the break . So a little rejig after sensible words if we kept possession we would tire Cudham out and win the game. We played well for 10 minutes and started to stretch the game. Then Cudham scored again with a great drive from outside the area. Thereafter Cudham upped their game and we dropped off also tried to push forward a bit too keenly and we were picked off at will. Debuts to Will Davies and Martin Read at the age of 63 , also lots of effort and some good football played especially from our central midfield duo of Pope and Carruth. Also thanks to Mick Pilgrim for reffing Team. Wellman , Kendrick N , Nelson G , Lovelock C , Davies W , Quinton Jon, Pope M, Carruth G, Dyki C, Mace M, Smart D. Fresh after the Christmas training camp, the Super Vets found themselves against the very useful Cudham who had won their previous game 7-0 according to the bringer of all Christmas joyful tidings Mick Pilgrim! Feeling this was clearly against weaker opposition the squad took to the pitch and looked good for the first half hour with the score still at 0-0 and little chances for either side. Alas this was as good as it got and after a few errors and general lack of pace in key positions we found the game slipped away and got worst in the 2nd half and ended around the 7-0 mark although it's the taking part that counts! right? The names have been changed to protect the innocent and Pamela in goal had a couple of shockers and Timmy Mallet, Harvey Steinwein and Mr. Blobby did not have too much to shout about but in general a good run out for everybody! Pictures by Viktoriya Pintyak GOOD GAME; GOOD GAME Old Wokingians 0 6th Xl 4 (Played January 14th)

After a tense start, with the anticipation of playing the top dogs in the and our team consisting of a tremendous contrast in styles, with players brought in from all over the OWs, we started confidently and, from the off, it looked like a 4-0 game , with a few minor scares and a little jostling However, at this point a small shout should go out to Greg Smith, whose move up to the 5th Xl thos week provided the opportunity for a more solid back four without the worry of having to Classified Results January 21st 1995 cover him on his glory seeking runs – normally ending in slightly wayward finishing All games Postponed Anyway, back to the game, which was a text-book example of smooth flowing football with the flow and skill of the Brazilians of old. ALL OUR YESTERDAY'S - 25 YEARS AGO A poor performance led to the 3rds losing to a moderate school side at Dulwich on Saturday. Chances were made and missed and the defence looked slacker than it has done all season and only during the first half hour did we Classified Results, January 24th 1970 look like a reasonable side We started well and were all over the school and a good goal was scored by BOB FAVELL, shooting under Old 3 1st Xl 2 Reaseley, the ‘keeper’s body as he was advancing out of his goal. By half-time the score had reached 2-2, with BOB FAVELL Bromleia Simner scoring from the spot and the school getting two goals, one good and the other not so good! ns If the defence had been bad in the first half it was even worse in the second.
