Old Wilsonians Football Club Season 2019/20 Newsletter No OLD WILSONIANS FOOTBALL CLUB SEASON 2019/20 NEWSLETTER NO. 18 All reports and news by 7pm Sunday [email protected] 1s , 3s & 6s not allocated fixtures so at Hayes, the 2s improve but go down to Nottsborough whilst 8s lose heavily to an All Stars City of London X1. Away the 4s and 5s go down fighting in close defeats at Lyonians and South Bank respectively. In the game of the day the 7s turned over previously unbeaten Civil Service 7s with a Jonny Q ‘perfect’ hat trick to take them top. So good the game merited two match reports. Table below. POS . Another home game for the 2’s against a historically strong Nottsborough side saw OWs start strongly. Within the first 10 minutes the 2’s were one up thanks to some gritty play in the middle and a neat through ball from Jon Howe which found Demo with only the keeper to beat. After looping the ball over the last man, Tom Dicko Dixon did his best to try nick the goal off Demo heading the ball in from less than one yard out. Nottsborough then began to bring the game to OW’s and started to exploit opportunities down the flanks. The fullback found some joy and after riding about 4 challenges stuck it straight in the stanchion against a helpless Powley, a feat he’d probably never be able to replicate again. The pressure continued and a corner resulted in another Nottsborough goal. A devilish delivery was met by the Notts centre back which was then dubiously put in with a helping hand from their striker a la Maradona. T he second half saw another neat goal which was cut back from the wing and finished nicely on the edge of the box, 3-1 Notts. The remainder of the game saw OWs have large amounts of possession, but ultimately weren’t able to convert. The final whistle sounded, questions about management resurfaced and musings about whether who would last longer George or Solskjaer found there way into the clubhouse. Azza fights another week at least. The home side have been sweeping everyone aside thus far this season (including several double figure drubbings) and we knew that it was going to be tough proposition before kick off. On an excellent pitch the game started with really high tempo with both teams playing great football. It was clear why Lyonians have been destroying teams as they attacked with lightening pace and had several players who could clearly play at a much higher level and we were grateful to Dan Sellman in midfield who had a game long battle with their number 10 who was really hurting us time and again (they have met before playing for both clubs respective 1s). For all their skill the first goal came from a simple error from Moniz at the back, who misjudged a long ball over the top, not what we needed, 1-0. We picked ourselves up and immediately hit back when we caught them out and James STRIDE finished well on his return from a year out with a knee injury.

THE BALL IS FLAT THE BALL IS FLAT: A STUDY OF INSTITUTIONAL RACISM IN FOOTBALL By ERIC POOL, B.A. A Thesis Submitted to the School of Graduate Studies in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts McMaster University © Copyright by Eric Pool, September 2010 MASTER OF ARTS (2010) McMaster University (English) Hamilton, Ontario TITLE: The Ball is Flat: A Study ofInstitutional Racism in Football AUTHOR: Eric Pool, B.A. (University of Waterloo) SUPERVISOR: Professor Chandrima Chakraborty NUMBER OF PAGES: v, 127 ii Abstract: This project examines the ways in which the global mobility of players has unsettled the traditional nationalistic structure of football and the anxious responses by specific football institutions as they struggle to protect their respective political and economic hegemonies over the game. My intention is to expose the recent institutional exploitation of football's "cultural power" (Stoddart, Cultural Imperialism 650) and ability to impassion and mobilize the masses in order to maintain traditional concepts of authority and identity. The first chapter of this project will interrogate the exclusionary selection practices of both the Mexican and the English Football Associations. Both institutions promote ethnoracially singular understandings of national identity as a means of escaping disparaging accusations of "artificiality," thereby protecting the purity and prestige of the nation, as well as the profitability of the national brand. The next chapter will then turn its attention to FIFA's proposed 6+5 policy, arguing that the rule is an institutional effort by FIF A to constrain and control the traditional structure of football in order to preserve the profitability of its highly "mediated and commodified spectacle" (Sugden and Tomlinson, Contest 231) as well as assert its authority and autonomy in the global realm.

  • A Greater Glory
1 INCHES: THE FINE LINE BETWEEN VICTORY AND DEFEAT Picture this. It’s May 1994. The Wembley atmosphere is electric as rain falls on the pristine turf. A sea of Chelsea blue and Manchester red surrounds me, as 90,000 people cram into the world’s greatest stadium to watch the world’s greatest domestic cup final. They say it’s every schoolboy’s dream to play in an FA Cup Final and thousands of young kids around the world are watching amongst the 90 million global TV audience. The scene is set. It’s Chelsea v. Manchester United; Blues v. Reds; South v. North. Manchester United have already won the Premier League. I’m playing for Chelsea but United are the better team. Nevertheless, despite them being League Champions we have beaten them 1-0 twice this season, home and away. And I scored both times. This season, we are their bogey team and I am their nemesis. All my senses are heightened as I walk onto the pitch; Hoddle, Wise, Spencer, Stein and Cascarino are next to me. It’s as if I see everything in Technicolor, feel every drop of rain, spot individual friends and family members in the crowd. I glance up and see my wife, Amanda. As long as she is here everything’s okay. I remember our new baby, Jake, not even a year old and safe at home with my wife’s mother. I see my parents. Beaming. 23 A GREATER GLORY They’ve followed me every step of the way. A thumbs up from my father.
