    Secret Traditions in the Modern Tarot: Folklore and the Occult Revival I first encountered the evocative images of the tarot, as no doubt many others have done, in T. S. Eliot’s The Waste Land. This led to Pamela Coleman Smith’s tarot deck, and from there to the idiosyncratic writings of A.E. Waite with its musings on the Grail, on ‘secret doctrines’ and on the nature of mystical experience. Revival of interest in the tarot and the proliferation of tarot decks attests to the vibrancy of this phenomenon which appeared in the context of the eighteenth century occult revival. The subject is extensive, but my topic for now is the development of the tarot cards as a secret tradition legend in Britain from the late 1880’s to the 1930’s. (1) During this period, ideas about the nature of culture drawn from folklore and anthropological theory combined with ideas about the origins of Arthurian literature and with speculations about the occult nature of the tarot. These factors working together created an esoteric and pseudo-academic legend about the tarot as secret tradition. The most recent scholarly work indicates that tarot cards first appeared in Italy in the fifteenth century, while speculations about their occult meaning formed part of the French occult revival in the late eighteenth century. (Dummett 1980, 1996 ) The most authoritative historian of tarot cards, the philosopher Michael Dummett, is dismissive of occult and divinatory interpretations. Undoubtedly, as this excellent works points out, ideas about the antiquity of tarot cards are dependent on assumptions made at a later period, and there is a tendency among popular books to repeat each other rather than use primary sources.

    UPPSALA UNIVERSITY Department of Theology History of Religions and Social Sciences of Religion C2, 15 credits Spring 2013 Supervisor: Eva Hellman The Baphomet A discourse analysis of the symbol in three contexts by Carl Karlson-Weimann Abstract This essay examines how the Baphomet symbol is understood in three different contexts. Firstly, the understanding of the Baphomet is analysed in the book Dogme et Rituel de la Haute Magie, written by the French 19th century occultist Éliphas Lévi. Secondly, I analyse the symbol in The Satanic Bible by Anton Szandor LaVey, the person responsible for having introduced Satanism to modernity. Thirdly, the Baphomet as understood in contemporary metal music culture is analysed. Ultimately, I find the Baphomet to be viewed as a symbol associated with Satan, but in very different ways. The reason to why these differences exist I find to be partially explained by the initial mystery surrounding the Baphomet. The understanding of the Baphomet depends also on the role of Satan in each context. Due to Satan representing different things in the three different contexts, so does the Baphomet. This Qabalistic brand of esotericism was spearheaded by Eliphas Lévi who combined facets of the Cabala of the Renaissance that held a Christian view of ancient Jewish Kabbalah, with Gnostic, Hermetic, Pythagorean, and Neoplatonic sources. Initiates sought the hidden and cryptographic meaning of Qabalistic texts and were attracted to the concept of a Divine language and its evocatory potential. This thesis shows how esoteric ideas were circulated though networks and clubs, including Le Chat Noir, Librairie de l'Art indépendant, and Mallarmé’s Tuesday salons. It argues that the Qabalah was especially important in these circles through the influence of Lévi, Gérard Encausse (Papus), and Joséphin Péladan. Tarot cards in Europe emerged apparently as early as in the course of the 14th century partly in Italy and partly in France. There are theories, however, according to which Tarot in fact originated in ancient Egypt, from where it took its course to conquer the world. In many of the Eastern countries, from Egypt through India and to China, one actually may find a number of such figurative images with a likeness to the Tarot figures: even the Gypsies have such cards, which may explain how these were spread in Asia and Europe. It is just as difficult to prove scientifically the genesis of the Tarot cards as to ascertain the origin of the name of tarot. Some scientists think that this name is of French origin, but Gustav Meyrinck, in his book ‘The Golem’ is of the opinion ‘[...] that aroc or Tarot has the same meaning as the Hebrew word ‘Torah’ (the Law), or the name may be connected with the ancient 3 Egyptian word ‘Taruth’ (the One who is consulted), or it may come from the word ‘Tarisk’ of the ancient Zend language, which means “I demand the answer.“ The Tarot cards are used for “play as well as — and this is more often the case — for “fortune telling’. THE Tarot is composed of 78 cards, divided as follows-- 56 cards called the minor arcana. 22 cards called the major arcana. The 56 minor arcana are formed of 4 series of 14 cards each. The 22 major arcana are formed of 21 numbered cards, and of one un-numbered. In order to study the Tarot with success, we must then arrange the following packets-- 4 packets of 14 cards each. 14 + 14 + 14 + 14 = 56 1 packet of 21 cards = 21 1 packet of 1 card = 1 Total . 78 Jon- This is actually an over simplification by Papus himself, as we will see as we get into the Key of the Major Arcana, he divides up the Major Arcana into 4 groups, the 1st, 2nd and 3rd septenaries, a group he classifies as general transitionary cards, and the 0 card, which he also muses a little bit about how it should actually be the 22 card. This packet, taken as a whole, corresponds to one of the colours of our pack of cards. The 4 packets respectively represent the wands or sceptres, corresponding to our clubs; the cups or goblets, corresponding to our hearts; the swords, corresponding to our spades; and money or Pentacles, corresponding to our diamonds. We shall now study one of these packets, for instance that of Sceptres. The packet consists of 4 figures: the king, queen, knight, and knave, and of ten cards which simply bear numbers.

    Politics of Local Occultism: An Ethnographic Study of Tarot Community in Java Achmad Fawaid1 Abstract As a global occult practice, Tarot has been practiced by local people, including Javanese practitioners, and it is perhaps that a study of localization is necessary to determine how strongly influential Javanese belief system has been upon Tarot practitioners, or how Javanese Tarot practitioners have adopted and modified Javanese esoteric and occult practices into Tarot. My thesis is that localizing Tarot could be possible in terms of adaptation, acculturation, indigenization, or–in some extents–hybridization in Javanese society, either in the levels of superficial, practice, or values. By using ethnography as method of research, this study has resulted in two major findings: (1) Javanese Tarot practitioners have negotiated themselves in the cultic milieu they live in by localizing their alias, communities, Tarot reading strategies, Tarot decks, and their personal preference to gather in candi, and (2) Tarot practice in Java has closely been related to some Javanese belief systems, such as rasa and kahanan, and it makes them consciously or unconsciously practice Javanism in their daily activity of Tarot with different levels. However, these have implications and challenges they should deal with: cultural ambivalence, a cultural implication that they can‘t be free from it, because as much as they play Western Tarot, they are still Javanese. This ambivalence also indicates an inseparable concept of globalization as dynamic one in the term of ”localizing‘. The idea of localizing Tarot makes it possiEle to Ee a global phenomena in which local Javanese belief system embedded into Javanese Tarot practice became a part of global network.
