SS Ketel Marte (2x5, R), RF Stefen Romero (2x5, R, RBI), 1B Jesus Montero (2x4), LF Franklin Gutierrez (2x4, 2B) and 3B Carlos Rivero (2x4, R, HR, RBI) each recorded 2 of the Rainiers 11 hits. Rivero hit his first home run of the season with a solo blast to lead off the 3rd innings as part of a 4-run inning for Tacoma. The Rainiers held a 4-2 lead, but couldn’t come back after allowing 8 runs between the 4th and 6th innings and another in the 8th inning. Starter Jordan Pries (4.0,9,6,6,1,2,HR) recorded the loss after allowing 6 runs on 9 hits in 4.0 innings. Relivers Lucas Luetge (1.0,3,2,2,0,0,HR), Logan Bawcom (2.0,4,2,2,0,4) and Mayckol Guaipe (1.0,2,1,1,1,0) combined to allow 5 runs over the final 4.0 innings. OF NOTE: Tacoma’s Opening Day roster features 14 players with Major League experience, including John Baker (C), Roenis Elias (LHP), Justin Gemano (RHP), Franklin Gutierrez (OF), James Jones (OF), Mike Kickham (LHP), Dominic Leone (RHP), Mark Lowe (RHP), Lucas Luetge (LHP), Jesus Montero (1B/DH), Shawn O’Malley (INF), Carlos Rivero (INF), Stefen Romero (OF) and Joe Saunders (LHP). Four of the Mariners top-30 prospects and two of the top-four made the Rainiers Opening Day roster. INF Ketel Marte and OF Patrick Kivlehan check in at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively, and are joined by No. 13 John Hicks (C) and No. 26 Myckol Guaipe (RHP). No. 29 Ji-Man Choi (INF) and No. 30 Danny Hultzen (LHP) are both on the Disabled List. QUEST FOR 4000 (Courtesy of the Rainers): The Rainiers are 17 victories shy of 4,000 all-time franchise wins. Since 1960, Tacoma has put together a record of 3983-3960 (.501). The Rainiers record as an affiliate of the Seattle Mariners is 1460-1404 (.510). COACHING STAFF: Pat Listach is in his first season as the Rainiers manager and is the 30th manager in Tacoma history. Listach served as the manager PCL Iowa Cubs in 2002 and 2008, when he was named PCL Manager of the Year. He led those teams to a combined 110- 87 (.558) record. He has also manged two seasons in the Southern League with West Tennessee, going 148-130 (.532). Listach spent the 2014 season as the third base coach for the Houston Astros. He has over 20 years of experience in professional baseball as a player, Major League and minor league coach, and minor league manager and coordinator. Prior to last season, Listach was the Los Angeles Dodgers minor league infield coordinator in 2013 and coached on the Major League staffs for the Chicago Cubs (2011-12) and Washington Nationals (2009-10) for two years apiece. Originally drafted by the Mariners in 1987 out of McLennan College, Listach began his 11-year professional career with the Brewers after they drafted him in the fifth round of the 1988 draft. Listach was named American League Rookie of the Year in 1992 after hitting .290/.352/.349 (168x579) with 47 RBI. Pitching coach Jaime Navarro, who is in his 7th season with the Mariners organization and hitting Cory Snyder, who is in his 5th season with the organization, are each in their second season with the Rainiers. Tom Newberg and Tyler Moos are part of the training staff, while Will Lindholm is the team’s performance coach. RF Gabby Guerrero (1x4, RBI) and LF Jabari Henry (1x4, 2B) each drove in a run in the top of the 9th inning as Jackson broke a 0-0 tie. SS Jack Reinheimer (2x4, 2B) and 3B Jordy Lara (2x4, R, 3B) each recorded 2 of the Generals 4 hits. Landazuri (6.0,1,0,0,0,5) recorded a no decision, despite allowing only 1 hit and striking out 4 in 6.0 scoreless innings. Gillheeney (2.1,2,0,0,2,3) earned the win with 2.1 shutout innings in relief, while Anderson (0.2,0,0,0,0) recorded the final 2 outs of the game and stranding an inherited runner to pick up his first save of the season. OF NOTE: Jackson’s Opening Day roster features 17 players who played for the Generals in 2014, including Matt Anderson (RHP), Steven Baron (C), Patrick Brady (IF/OF), James Gillheeney (LHP), Moises Hernandez (RHP), Kyle Hunter (LHP), Stephen Landazuri (RHP), Jordy Lara (INF/OF), Trevor Miller (RHP), Julio Morban (OF), Dan Paolini (INF), D.J. Peterson (INF), Tyler Pike (LHP), Dario Pizzano (OF), Jordan Shipers (LHP), Tyler Smith (INF) and Carlton Tanabe (C). Paolini and Peterson each led the Generals last season with 13 home runs, while Paolini finished second on the team with 65 RBI after appearing in a team-high 116 games. COACHING STAFF: James Horner is in his second season as manager of the Mariners affiliate in the Southern League, the Jackson Generals. Horner is in his 9th season with the Mariners (2005-10, 2013-current), but third as manager since returning to the organization in 2013. Pitching coach Lance Painter and hitting coach Roy Howell round out the staff in Jackson. Painter enters his 10th season with the Mariners, including his fifth with Jackson (2010-12, 2013-current). Howell returns to the Generals after managing the Tacoma Rainiers in 2014. He guided the Rainiers to 74 wins in his first season leading the field staff, which was tied for the 9th-most victories collected by a manager in his first full season at Tacoma.
