Most notable of the group is Cincinnati's recent free-agent signee, starting pitcher Scott Feldman, who will be with Team Israel. Reliever Jumbo Diaz will pitch for the Dominican Republic, second baseman Dilson Herrera will be with Colombia and non-roster catcher Shawn Zarraga will play for the Netherlands. Feldman, who turned 34 on Tuesday, was signed to a one-year, $2.3 million contract on Jan. 26, and he is expected to be Cincinnati's No. 4 starter. He was 7-4 with a 3.97 ERA in 40 games (five starts) with the Astros and Blue Jays this past season. Diaz, 32, has been with the Reds in each of the past three seasons, but he isn't a lock for a bullpen spot this spring. In 45 games in 2016, he had a 3.14 ERA, retired 30 of 45 first batters faced and allowed six of 19 inherited runners to score. -

Arroyo, who was shut down after his June 18 start vs. the Dodgers because of shoulder soreness, wasn't holding out much hope to pitch again this season -- or ever again. In a dugout interview during the Reds' 8-2 loss to the Cardinals, Arroyo told Fox Sports Ohio's Jim Day that he's already likely thrown his final pitch in the Major Leagues. "Yeah, I think so," Arroyo said. "It's probably the last time I'm going to throw. There could always be that chance you get one inning in September just to tip the cap to the fans, but probably not. My arm, now that a lot of the anti-inflammatories and different things are kind of bleeding out of my system, I'm realizing how banged up my shoulder is, and the elbow is starting to bother me as well. "I'm enjoying the ride with these guys for the next three months. But the last time you saw me pitch was against the Dodgers, I think." Arroyo, 40, attempted to make a comeback after he missed 2 1/2 years to have elbow and shoulder surgeries in 2014 while with the D-backs. -

The Boston Red Sox Tuesday, December 1, 2020 * The Boston Globe MLB Draft League launching wooden-bat league for top draft prospects Matthew Doherty Major League Baseball is launching a wooden-bat league for top prospects who are eligible for the MLB Draft, it announced Monday. The MLB Draft League, which will be operated by the scouting service Prep Baseball Report, has five member teams and is discussing adding a sixth team in the coming weeks. Teams will play a 68-game regular season from late May to mid-August, split into two parts. The first half of the season will showcase the draft-eligible high school, college, and junior college players. After an All-Star break centered around the MLB Draft (July 11-13), teams will restock their rosters with the top undrafted players for the second half of the season. Paul Toboni, the Director of Amateur Scouting for the Red Sox, said he’s unsure whether top prospects will choose to play in the MLB Draft League. The pandemic’s effect on the spring season will also play a factor, according to Toboni. “I think it’s too early to tell,” said Toboni. “It’s tough to predict the caliber of prospect that will choose to play in this league. And I’m stating the obvious here, but how the pandemic affects spring seasons will ultimately have an impact on prospects’ willingness to play as well.” The college baseball regular season ends in mid-May and the College World Series is scheduled from June 19 - June 30 this season.
