The district is located in the north-eastern side of the North West province and also shares boundaries with municipalities in other provinces listed as follows: . Waterberg District Municipality to the north . West Rand District Municipality to the south-east . City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality to the east; . Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality to the south; and . Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality to the west. Map: Locality map of Bojanala Platinum District Municipality Bojanala Platinum District Municipality (BPDM) is a Category C municipality situated in the north-eastern part of North West province. The District Municipality includes five Category B municipalities of Kgetleng Rivier, Madibeng, Moretele, Moses Kotane and Rustenburg. Demographics The population resident within Bojanala district constitutes approximately 32% of the total population of the North West province. Rustenburg local municipality is the largest Bojanala Platinum District Municipality 5 2009/10 Reviewed Integrated Development Plan with population concentration of approximately 33% of the total population of BPDM and Kgetleng Rivier being the smallest in the district (3%) as well as the province (1%). About 35% of the total households within the entire province are

N. B.* Department of Environmental, Water and Earth Science, Tshwane University of Technology, Arcadia Campus, Private Bag X680, Pretoria 0001, South Africa. Accepted 10 February, 2012 The aim of this study is to assess the quality of the groundwater currently supplied to the rural communities of the North West Province. Groundwater samples collected from 100 boreholes in these rural areas were subjected to culture-based methods using selective media for the isolation of faecal and total coliform bacteria. Molecular analysis targeting 16S rRNA gene, and the restriction fragment- length polymorphism (RFLP) and sequence analysis of amplified gene for differentiating between species and strains of bacteria, were applied to selected coliform isolates. The physico-chemical parameters such as pH, temperature, total dissolved solids (TDS), turbidity and concentrations of chloride, sulphates, nitrate, fluoride, magnesium, sodium and calcium were also determined. The results revealed that 83% of the boreholes did not comply with the fluoride limit of SANS 241 (0 to 1 mg/l), 40% did not comply with the nitrate limit (0 to 6 mg/l as N), 45% did not comply with the magnesium limit (0 to 30 mg/l as Mg), 43% did not comply with the calcium limit (0 to 32 mg/l as Ca), 31% did not comply with TDS and 47% did not comply with the turbidity limit (<1 NTU).

Fiscal Year 2008/09 2009/10 2010/11 2011/12 2012/13 Actual Estimate Forecast Headline CPI Inflation 9.9% 6.7% 5.7% 6.2% 5.9% Source :Budget Review 2010 Further BPDM has also taken into account the wage agreement SALGA concluded with municipal workers unions on 31 July 2009, comprising of a 10.5 percent increase and a 2.5 percent non-pensionable allowance. On 17 April 2009 the Minister of Finance promulgated the Municipal Budget and Reporting Regulations (Government Gazette 32141). These regulations are applicable to all municipalities from 1 July 2010. The most important element of the new regulations is that they prescribe the format for municipal budgets. National Treasury has produced an Excel based model to assist municipalities in the compilation of the new budgets. Bojanala Platinum District Municipality has complied with these formats for the 2010/11 financial year and they are attached herewith, however certain of these forms are not applicable to us as per the powers and functions assigned to us.
