ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: ENGINEERING CONSENT: PEENEMUENDE, NATIONAL SOCIALISM, AND THE V-2 MISSILE, 1924-1945 Michael Brian Petersen, Doctor of Philosophy, 2005 Dissertation Directed By: Professor Jeffrey Herf Departmen t of History This dissertation is the story of the German scientists and engineers who developed, tested, and produced the V-2 missile, the world’s first liquid -fueled ballistic missile. It examines the social, political, and cultural roots of the prog ram in the Weimar Republic, the professional world of the Peenemünde missile base, and the results of the specialists’ decision to use concentration camp slave labor to produce the missile. Previous studies of this subject have been the domain of either of sensationalistic journalists or the unabashed admirers of the German missile pioneers. Only rarely have historians ventured into this area of inquiry, fruitfully examining the history of the German missile program from the top down while noting its admi nistrative battles and technical development. However, this work has been done at the expense of a detailed examination of the mid and lower -level employees who formed the backbone of the research and production effort. This work addresses that shortcomi ng by investigating the daily lives of these employees and the social, cultural, and political environment in which they existed. It focuses on the key questions of dedication, motivation, and criminality in the Nazi regime by asking “How did Nazi authori ties in charge of the missile program enlist the support of their employees in their effort?” “How did their work translate into political consent for the regime?” “How did these employees come to view slave labor as a viable option for completing their work?” This study is informed by traditions in European intellectual and social history while borrowing from different methods of sociology and anthropology. -

c -- . b * NASAICR- AFFORDABLE IN-SPACE TRANSPORTATION PHASE II 0 ANADVANCED CONCEPTS PROJECT October 16-17,1996 Technical Interchange Meeting EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Office of Space Access and Technology, NASA Headquarters Advanced Concepts Office, NASA Marshall Space Flight Center National Aeronautics and Space Administration 0 University of Alabama in Huntsville 5-25620 AFFORDABLE IN-SPACE TRANSPORTATION TECHNICAL INTERCHANGE MEETING SECTION 1 1.0 Introduction The Affordable In-Space Transportation (AIST) program was established by the NASA Office of Space Access to improve transportation and lower the costs from Low Earth Orbit (LEO) to Geostationary Earth Orbit (GEO) and beyond (to Lunar orbit, Mars orbit, inner solar system missions, and return to LEO). A goal was established to identify and develop radically innovative concepts for new upper stages for Reusable Launch Vehicles (RLV) and Highly Reusable Space Transportation (HRST) systems. New architectures and technologies are being identified which have the potential to meet a cost goal of $1,000 to $2,000 per pound for transportation to GEO and beyond for overall mission cost (including the cost to LEO). A Technical Interchange Meeting (TIM) was held on October 16 and 17, 1996 in Huntsville, Alabama to review previous studies, present advanced concepts and review technologies that could be used to meet the stated goals. The TIM was managed by NASA-Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) Advanced Concepts Office with Mr. Alan Adams providing TIM coordination. Mr. John C. Mankins of NASA Headquarters provided overall sponsorship. The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) Propulsion Research Center hosted the TIM at the UAH Research Center. -

NEWS RELEASE Tuesday, May 22, 2007 Eight to be Inducted into Space Camp Hall of Fame HUNTSVILLE, AL -- The U.S. Space & Rocket Center proudly announces eight people, including famed rocket scientist Dr. Wernher von Braun and Dottie Metcalf- Lindenburger, one of America’s youngest astronauts, will be inducted into the Space Camp Hall of Fame on Wednesday, June 13th. The black tie optional event will take place in the Von Braun Center’s North Hall beginning at 7:00 p.m. Award winning actor William Shatner will emcee the event, with special guests former NASA astronauts Story Musgrave and Jim Halsell. Other members of the inaugural class of inductees include Edward O. Buckbee, Dr. Georg von Tiesenhausen, Dan Oates, Amanda Stubblefield, Dr. James Rice, and Penny Pettigrew. The Space Camp Hall of Fame was created to help celebrate the 25th anniversary of Space Camp and designed to honor graduates, former employees and supporters who have distinguished themselves in their respective careers or made considerable in-kind contributions in an effort to help further the goals of the Space Camp program. Current plans call for as many as ten to be inducted annually. Von Braun will be the first. When the names are called and the nominees introduced, Dr. Wernher von Braun will be the first. Best known for his leading role in the development of America’s manned space flight program, von Braun also conceived the idea for Space Camp. In 1977, while touring the Space & Rocket Center, he shared, with former CEO Ed Buckbee, his vision of an educational camp program for children designed to help prepare the next generation of engineers, mathematicians and scientists. -

The study analyzes the impact Project Paperclip, the relocation of Nazi scientists, had on the Huntsville area and the movement toward social justice. The study shows why Huntsville was a prime location for a groundbreaking movement leading to Huntsville being the first desegregated city in the state of Alabama and home to the first desegregated public school system in the “Heart of Dixie”. -

Waring 29 November 1988 TIENSENHAUSEN: I thought that maybe it is helpful for you that you know a little background about my self, and I have here some biographical information. You can keep that. I was at Peeneme unde then came over here. My main job to summarize all these things was innovation. They cal led me "the idea man". I had to come up with new missions. I designed the first lunar rover for instance, that was in 1959, and got a lot of laughs over that, too! And many other things that are listed there. I was in the Advanced Systems off ice under Hammerglid [?tc 15] that is part of program material and I retired almost exactly 2 years ago. I now lecture at the Space Academy at the rocket Center. It is a lot of fun. The students are smart, they ask a lot of good ques tions. What I lecture in, they call astronomy, I start from the Big Bang, to planetary exploration and everything in between. Space telescope, they ask very good questions. I do it twice an week, right now is a quiet period. I was called last week for a special group and I lecture to private gatherings. I have fun with it. DUNAR: In connection with mentioning that you were involved in planning and generator of ideas. Levine in the book you just mentioned before, he talks about one of the problems being that NASA has always had a problem of not adequate long-range plan ning. -

Bush President of the United States The White House Washington, D.C. 20500 Dear Mr. President: On January 14, 2004, you announced a new vision for the United States civil space program based upon exploration of the Moon, Mars, and beyond. The Executive Order you signed on January 27, 2004, created a Commission to examine and make recommendations on implementing this new vision and asked the Commission to submit its report 120 days after its first meeting. In accordance with your direction, enclosed is the Commission’s final report, A Journey to Inspire, Innovate, and Discover. The Commission sought extensive input for our deliberations, from within the U.S. government and directly from the public in the United States and abroad. We held five televised public hearings, meet- ing in: Washington, D.C.; Dayton, Ohio; Atlanta, Georgia; San Francisco, California; and New York City. We heard public testimony from 96 individuals representing academia, industry, media, teachers, students, entrepreneurs, astronauts, labor unions, state governments, federal government agencies, international space agencies, and professional associations. The Commission’s web site received more than 6 million hits and over 6,000 written inputs. Public comments strongly supported the new space vision, by a 7-to-1 ratio. -

He was son to Felix Tiesenhausen and grandson to the Livonian district administrator, chamberlain of the Russian Empire, and Family Letter 2018 of the v.Tiesenhausen Family 1 - 2- member of the imperial council, Heinrich Tiesenhausen, who was a committed reformer of the Livonian Knighthood. His sister Ursula was for a long time a driving force in our family and worked successfully over decades as our genealogist. Most notably Georg Tiesenhausen belonged to the pioneers of the manned space flight. He was part of a group of scientists around Wernher v.Braun first at the Laboratory of the German Army in Peenemuende and later for the North American Space Agency NASA. In an extensive appreciation of his life’s accomplishments published in the „Frankfurter Allgemeinen Zeitung“ it was written: Tiesenhausen studied at the Academy of Engineers in Hamburg, was called to duty in the German Army and dispatched to the Eastern Front in 1941. As a prospective engineer, he was allowed to continue his academic education. Following a successful graduation with outstanding results in 1943, he was dispatched to the Laboratory of the Army in Peenemünde. There he worked on the development of the first ballistic missile, the so called V2.
