Diné, Apache, Hopi, Pueblo, Gila, Yaqui, and O’odham bands are currently creating vast punk and metal music scenes. In this thesis, I argue that Native punk is not just a cultural movement, but a form of survivance. Bands utilize punk and their stories as a conduit to counteract issues of victimhood as well as challenge imposed mechanisms of settler colonialism, racism, misogyny, homophobia, notions of being fixed in the past, as well as bringing awareness to genocide and missing and murdered Indigenous women. Through D.I.Y. and space making, bands are writing music which ii resonates with them, and are utilizing their own venues, promotions, zines, unique fashion, and lyrics to tell their stories.

Los Angeles has many different songs written about it that articulate the essence of Los Angeles. Songs describe parts of places in depth and LA songs can be divided into six different categories: driving, danger, sun, stars, women, and loneliness. This project will explore how some of the most famous songs about Los Angeles express part of the LA identity and will try to answer the question: does Los Angeles need every part for its true identity? Los Angeles was founded in 1781 by the Spanish on the site of a Native American village, but it wasn’t until the first film studio was established in 1911 that Los Angeles really began to soar. In the 1920s and 1930s the box office began to boom and thus the population of Los Angeles did too. Easterners began the move West in search of their fortune and during the Great Depression the population began to increase even more. The viewer experience of the feeling of nostalgia often associated with the analog and retro aesthetics is examined in depth. Finally, the thesis argues that use of analog and retro aesthetics and the associated nostalgia this evokes in the spectator can position and distinguish a music video in the market towards potential audiences. By using a theoretical analytical approach, the research proposes answers to the primary research question: What are the meanings and purposes of using analog and retro aesthetics in contemporary music videos and in which way are they related to nostalgia? Subsequent questions arising from the research explore the differences in the use of analog and retro aesthetics by mainstream or alternative bands. Specifically, a distinction is made between the use of the aesthetic merely to follow a trend as opposed to using the aesthetic to emphasizing the message behind the music video.
