If it was any other time of year these three and their boyfriends might be heading to a concert or bar, but it is Halloween which means that like everyone else they will be bound for Hell Fest – a sprawling labyrinth of rides, games and mazes that travels the country and happens to be in town. Every year thousands follow Hell Fest to experience fear at the ghoulish carnival of nightmares. But for one visitor, Hell Fest is not the attraction – it is a hunting ground. An opportunity to slay in plain view of a gawking audience, too caught up in the terrifyingly fun atmosphere to recognize the horrific reality playing out before their eyes. As the body count and frenzied excitement of the crowds continue to rise, he turns his masked gaze to Natalie, Brooke, Taylor and their boyfriends who will fight to survive the night. How Film & TV Music Communicate – Vol.2 Text © Brian Morrell 2013 Chapter 2 T H E S U B T L E T I E S, I N T R I C A C I E S A N D E X Q U I S I T E T E N S I O N S O F T V M U S I C In this chapter we will examine the music for some notable television dramas and documentaries, all of which have, to varying degrees, subtlety, introspection and /or elements of minimalism as hallmarks of their identity. This needn’t always mean ‘quiet and closed-off’ but that the composers in each case have scored the films using a degree of restraint and sensitivity. In all cases the music has been pivotal in defining the projects commercially and creatively. The television dramas and documentaries analysed are: Lost (Michael Giacchano) The Waking Dead (Bear McCreary) Midnight Man (Ben Bartlett) Twin Peaks (Angelo Badalmenti) Silent Witness (John Harle) Inspector Morse (Barrington Pheloung) Deep Water (Harry Escott) Inspector Lynley Mysteries (Andy Price) Ten Days to War (Daniel Pemberton) Red Riding (Adrian Johnston) Dexter (Rolf Kent and Daniel Licht) Lost Michael Giacchano Lost is an iconic and successful television series which aired between 2004 and 2010. It follows the lives of survivors of a plane crash on a mysterious tropical island somewhere in the South Pacific. Episodes typically feature a storyline on the island as well as a secondary storyline from another point in a character’s life. The enormously evocative and expressive music for Lost is striking both in terms of its style and its narrative function. -

Scope: An Online Journal of Film and Television Studies Issue 22 February 2012 Between Allegory and Seduction: Perceptual Modulation in Battlestar Galactica Enrica Picarelli, Leuphana University, Germany When Ronald Moore discussed the genesis of his remake of Battlestar Galactica (hereafter abbreviated to BSG), he acknowledged the radical impact of 9/11 on his creative vision. Bringing to the screen his competence as a political science major, Moore describes the show as a piece of informed docufiction about the war on terror (Moore, quoted in Bassom, 2005: 12). The show indeed offers a compelling conceptualization of the attacks that blurs the boundary between the spectacle of a fictional apocalypse and the reality of the war on terror, prompting scholarly examination to this day. This article investigates the relationship between BSG and the post-9/11 ecology of agitation in light of George Bush‟s strategy of collective perceptual management. While most readings focus on BSG as an allegory for the war on terror, I address the audiovisual strategies by which BSG appeals to the viewer‟s senses, mapping the emergence of a post-9/11 sensibility. In doing so, I argue that the show‟s relationship with post-9/11 reality rests in its power to address the audience‟s feelings. To this end, I look at BSG‟s aesthetics of crisis as operating as an affective vector, playing out in an informational system that provokes a bodily response in the audience through affective solicitation. As argued below, akin to the Bush administration‟s use of television as a form of perceptual modulation, BSG‟s relationship with the war on terror is rooted in an ability to express meaning and feeling, keeping a sensation of agitation alive throughout a four-season run. -

Education Through Music-Los Angeles 2013-2014 Annual Report September 1, 2013 through August 31, 2014 In-School Music Education Programs Education Through Music-Los Angeles (ETM-LA) expanded its in- school music programs for underserved student populations with the mission to provide and promote the integration of music into the curricula of disadvantaged schools in order to enhance students’ academic performance and creative and general development. ETM-LA provided 45-minute weekly music classes at each of our partner schools on a yearlong basis with a variety of music disciplines– including violin, cello, guitar, recorder, general music, and chorus. The programs at each school were tailored to meet the needs of each population based on the vision of the Principal with guidance from ETM-LA. Students at all partner schools performed in two concerts to showcase their musical learning in the Fall and Spring semesters. Students visit Sonic Fuel Studios and participate in a recording session in partnership with One Voice. o support the quality of instruction in the classroom and teaching artists’ ability to educate children, ETM-LA provided In-School Music Education Programs ongoing mentorship and evaluation of its music teachers by multiple staff (Executive Director, Program Director, and other Tveteran teachers). In September 2013, ETM-LA held its weeklong intensive Summer Training Institute for its new and returning music teachers and guest teaching artists from other arts organizations. The institute focused on topics including Lesson Planning, Classroom Management, Integration, Creative Strategies, Assessment of Student Learning, Concert Preparation and Presentation, Singing Technique, Strings Methods, Teaching Copyright, and Pedagogy (Orff, Kodaly, Dalcroze, Suzuki, et al.).
