It was chaired by Ms Claire Chang and attended by BOA members. The meeting welcomed two new members. BLA is a partner of AFCC since 2010. The Asian Festival of Children’s Content (AFCC) is an annual festival in Singapore that celebrates and promotes the creation and appreciation of children’s books and content, with a focus on Asian themes. The Festival highlights included Writers and Illustrators Conference, Teachers Congress, Parents Forum, Cross Platform Summit, Book launches and Book Fair, Celebrating Our Stars and Award Presentation, Children’s Literature Lecture, Retreat, Edutour, Master Classes, Book Illustrators Gallery, Performances. Next year the Country of focus for AFCC 2018 will be Singapore from 9-13 May 2018. E-Perpustakaan can be accessed at https://www.librarybrunei.gov.bn/library/. The six participating libraries of public and special libraries are the Brunei Museums, Attorney General’s Chambers, Brunei History Centre, Pusat Dakwah Islamiah, Ministry of Religious Affairs and DBP Brunei and its branches. The e-library is to assist government officers and the public to search and reserve books online for items in the holdings of each of these libraries. The system features easy online searchers using Bookmyne, e-books, self check and a 24/7 book drop, and free membership. This new initiative is a boost for researchers and information seekers and joins other libraries that have already implemented their own e-library systems in providing seamless accessibility to library resources. AUTISM FRIENDLY LIBRARY It is a great accomplishment for SMARTER Brunei working closely with the Brunei Darussalam Library Association on 19 Oct 2016 in identifying a suitable library to start an autism friendly library for autistic children. Working in partnership with DBP Brunei Lambak Library with available space and funding, this became a reality on 11 May 2017, when the library was launched. The library is fitted with low lighting, blinds drawn with portable sensory equipment, comfy bean bags and a range of books, posters, toys and other resources to help create a comfortable calm space for children and families. An adjacent activity area with colourful painted walls provides space for storytelling. The library staff are more autism aware and provides simple adjustments in order to provide support to make visiting the library a fun and inclusive experience for people with autism and learning disabilities. Wadah Perpustakaan Bil.7, Julai 2017 4 LIBRARY DISCOVERIES BOOTCAMP The Brunei Darussalam Library Association is happy to introduce the one day programme in Sultan Omar Ali Saifudden College for year 7 students to instill the love of books and reading and to promote the importance of their school library and to cultivate a healthy habit in building a strong reading culture in Brunei Darussalam. Thirty students from SOASC, STPRI and SMJA attended the bootcamp which was held in SOASC Library on 24 May 2017 to mark World Book and Copyright Day. Aims To introduce students to the library and its services To teach students the different types of books in library collection To inculcate a love of books and reading and to increase literary knowledge The programme was designed with introduction to the library, the different literary collection and filled with lots of fun, quizzes and games. HOW SCHOOL LIBRARIES CELEBRATED WORLD BOOK DAY 2017 Wadah Perpustakaan Bil.7, Julai 2017 5 BLA IN INELI-ASEAN MIDWAY MEETING Wadah Perpustakaan Bil.7, Julai 2017 6 OPENING OF INELI-ASEAN MIDWAY MEETING The DBP Brunei and the Brunei Darussalam Library Association are honoured to cohost the meeting which was held on 22 to 24 May 2017 at Balai Sarmayuda, DBP Brunei Headquarters. It was attended by 14 ASEAN innovators (delegates) and 9 officials from the National Library of Philippines. This Meeting is a part of an online regional leadership programme for emerging public library leaders in Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) member countries comprised of Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. It is funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Its objective is to create a regional network of emerging library innovators and foster collaboration and partnership among stakeholders in the region as well as pilot a regional adoption of the international program. The entire programme of online learning modules, visits to innovative libraries, implementation of own innovative activities, collaborative projects, are designed to develop the effectiveness of innovators as leaders and contributor of significant future development of libraries in Southeast Asia. INELI-ASEAN activities. The First Convening on October 21-24 October 2015 at the Pullman Hotel City Center Lumpur, Malaysia the second Convening on 6-9 Sept 2016 at the National Library Board (NLB) Singapore The Midway Meeting on 25-27 Apr 2017 at National Library of Indonesia in Jakarta, Indonesia The Midway Meeting on 22-24 May 2017 at DBP Brunei In Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam The Third and last Convening will be on 21-24 November 2017 at National Library Vietnam in Hanoi, Viet Nam in commemoration of the 100th Founding Anniversary of National Library of Viet Nam. For the Midway Meeting in Brunei Darussalam, the innovators ( delegates) and officials arrived in Bandar Seri Begawan on 22 May 2017, and were welcomed by Pn Nellie, BLA President at the DBP Brunei Central Library in downtown. This was followed by Lunch hosted by the Brunei Darussalam Library Association before the delegates toured the library and were briefed by Dy Emi Suryaney, Acting Chief Librarian. At 4pm they travelled to the DBP Brunei Lambak Kanan Library which is located in a large national housing resettlement area and upon arrival were briefed by Dy Siti Mahyuna, Manager. The library offers public library services and has e-library services and an Autism Friendly Library. In the evening DBP Brunei hosted a Welcome Dinner for the innovators. On 23 May 2017, the programme was declared open by Awang Hj Suib Hj Wahab, Acting Director DBP Brunei. Welcoming Remarks was delivered by Ms Blesila, Project Director INELI-ASEAN. The overview and training session began on 23 and 24 May 2017 which was led by Ms Rhea, INELI-ASEAN Consultant followed by a Leadership Workshop by Ms Jennifer, Assistant Project Director INELI-ASEAN. Closing Remarks and Certificates presentation were delivered by Ms Xenia, Assistant Project Director INELI-ASEAN. The Brunei Darussalam Library Association hosted a Fellowship Dinner on 23 May 2017 at the Jerudong Park Playground. The innovators and officials left on evening of 24 May 2017.Go to page 7 Wadah Perpustakaan Bil.7, Julai 2017 7 From page 6 INELI-ASEAN MIDWAY MEETING ACTIVITIES Wadah Perpustakaan Bil.7, Julai 2017 8 THE ASIAN CHILDREN'S BOOK AWARD The award was presented on 19 May 2017 by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, at the Asian Festival of Children’s Content (AFCC). The award is a joint initiative between festival organiser, the National Book Council of Singapore, and Genting Singapore. The award is meant to honour an outstanding published picture book with distinct Asian themes by a writer, illustrator, and translator team of Asian descent, who are currently living in Asia. Tiny Feet, Tiny Shoes, a story by Singaporean author Adeline Foo and Filipino illustrator Beth Parrocha, took the top award at the inaugural Asian Children’s Book Award. Each creator received a cash award of $10,000. Another $10,000 goes to the book’s publisher, Scholastic Asia, as grant to commission and publish a translation of the book in any Asian language. SCHOLASTIC PICTURE BOOK AWARD 2017 The Scholastic Picture Book Award (SPBA) is a joint initiative between the National Book Development Council of Singapore (NBDCS) and Scholastic Asia, and it is presented biennially to an outstanding unpublished picture book with distinct Asian themes by an Asian team of writer and illustrator. The Little Durian Tree by Ho Jia En, Sabrine Ong, Shona Menon, Wong Shu Jing, and Melodie James (Singapore) (Winner) The Treasure of Kancil by Maria Karina Putri (Indonesia) (1st Runner-Up) The Whale Whisperer by Le Thi Bich Khoa (Vietnam) (2nd Runner-Up) The Flying Grandpa by Aytul Akal, Mavisel Yener, Kubra Nur Ozkececi, and Yasemin Yener (Turkey) How Rooster Became the Zodiac Animal by Emila Yusof (Malaysia) Poorni and her Peepal Leaf by Anuradha Ananth Huggler and Shailja Jain Chougule (India) Wadah Perpustakaan Bil.7, Julai 2017 9 In keeping with the festival's goal to promote exceptional children's content, the winner of the biennial Scholastic Picture Book Award acknowledges outstanding, unpublished picture books that incorporate distinctly Asian themes, was given to The Little Durian Tree. Chosen from 137 entries across Asia, the book was the brainchild of a five- member team comprising students from Singapore Polytechnic and is about a durian tree's quest for friendship despite the thorny exterior of the fruit.
