  • Paleocene Freshwater, Brackish-Water and Marine Molluscs from Al-Khodh, Oman
    Late Cretaceous to ?Paleocene freshwater, brackish-water and marine molluscs from Al-Khodh, Oman Simon Schneider, heinz A. KollmAnn & mArtin PicKford Bivalvia and Gastropoda from the late Campanian to Maastrichtian deltaic Al-Khodh Formation and from the overlying ?Paleocene shallow marine Jafnayn Limestone Formation of northeastern Oman are described. Freshwater bivalves include three species of Unionidae, left in open nomenclature, due to limited preservation. These are the first pre-Pleistocene unionids recorded from the Arabian Peninsula, where large freshwater bivalves are absent today. Brackish-water bivalves are represented by two species of Cyrenidae. Geloina amithoscutana sp. nov. extends the range of Geloina to the Mesozoic and to ancient Africa. Muscatella biszczukae gen. et sp. nov. has a unique combination of characters not shared with other genera in the Cyrenidae. Brackish-water gastropods comprise Stephaniphera coronata gen. et sp. nov. in the Hemisinidae; Subtemenia morgani in the new genus Subtemenia (Pseudomelaniidae); Cosinia sp. (Thiaridae); Pyrazus sp. (Batillariidae); and Ringiculidae sp. indet. From the Jafnayn Limestone Formation, several marginal marine mollusc taxa are also reported. The fossils are assigned to four mollusc communities and associations, which are indicative of different salinity regimes. • Key words: Unionidae, Cyrenidae, Pseudomelaniidae, Hemisinidae, taxonomy, palaeobiogeography. Houbrick Department of Invertebrate Zoology, National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C. 20560, U.S.A. ABSTRACT The anatomy of seven members of the Bittium group is described, clarifying the status of the genus-level taxa comprising it. Bittium reticulatum, the type species of Bittium Gray, is described in depth, thereby establishing criteria for comparisons with other taxa of Bitliinae. The type species of Stylidium Dell and LirobiWum Bartsch, and representatives of Bittiolum Cossmann and Cacozeliana Strand are examined and compared with Bittium, s.s. Results of anatomical studies and a phylogenetic analysis using the Hennig86 and CLADOS programs, with Cehtt)ium as an outgroup, establish monophyly for Bitliinae Cossmann and reveal six different genus-level taxa. A new genus, ittibittium, from the Indo-Pacific, is proposed. Synonymies of each genus- level taxon and representative species examined are presented. Brief accounts of the ecology and zoogeography of each taxon are given. Two taxa formerly attributed to the 6/ff/um-group are herein excluded from it and referred to Cerithium Bruguière. These are Cerithium zebrum Kiener, 1841, and Cerithium boeticum Pease, 1861. The subfamily Bittiinae Cossmann, 1906, is thought to comprise nine genera (four of which were not included in phylogenetic analyses) : Bittium Gray, 1847; Bittiolum Cossmann, 1906; Ittibittium gen. n., Stylidium Dalí, 1907; Lirobit- tium Bartsch, 1911 ; Cacozeliana Strand, 1928; Argyropeza Melvill & Standen, 1901 ; Varicopeza Gründel, 1976; Zebittium Finlay, 1927. The genus Cassiella Gofas, 1987, of uncertain place- ment, is included as a possible member of the group.

C. rupestre showed considerably less genic diversity than C. scabridurn. Results support the niche-width variation hypothesis as C. scabridum may be considered a species characterized by a broader ecological niche than C. rupestre. Vachhrajani* Marine Biodiversity and Ecology Lab, Department of Zoology, Faculty of Science, The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, Vadodara, Gujarat, India *corresponding Author: [email protected] Abstract : Intertidal distribution of Cerithium scabridum was studied on rocky Intertidal areas at Sutrapada (SP), Dhamlej (DH) and Kodinar (KO) along the coastal Saurashtra, Gujarat, India. Total 10 Line transect intercepted with 0.25 m2 quadrate were laid perpendicular to the shore line at each study site every month (December, 2011 to December, 2012). Total 6 quadrates (0.25 m2) were laid randomly per line transect from upper to lower intertidal mark for the quantification of the species. Maximum abundance of the C. Scabridum was observed in upper intertidal zone of all the study sites. Ecological attributes like abundance, density and frequency of occurrence of species were also calculated and they exhibited significant spatio-temporal variations at different study sites. Seasonal variability of sea water parameters like sea water temperature, salinity and pH were also studied and correlated with ecological attributes of species. Sea water temperature showed significant correlation with mean seasonal abundance of the species at all the study sites (SP: R2=0.77, P<0.05, DH: R2=0.91, P<0.05, KO: R2=0.78, P<0.05). In the present study, It was observed that seasonal changes in abiotic factors and chemical properties of sea water has prominent effect on the intertidal distribution of the species.

Gastropods assemblage in Khavich area indicates deposition in shallow, warm ramp-type carbonate platform. The Miocene and even Oligocene gastropod assemblages, relatively similar to Khavich section, reported from the other parts of the Tethys, show a possible passage, having been open during this interval, although a considerable provincialisms is also evident. Therefore the gastropods can be used for the correlation of Oligo-Miocene age formations in many places in the region and the world. Shells are being considered here as shell-bearing mollusks of the Gastropoda, Bivalvia and Scaphopoda. And the region covered is not only the Red Sea, but also the Gulf of Aden, including Somalia, and the Suez Canal, including Lessepsian species. Literature on fossils finds, especially from the Pliocene, Pleistocene and Holocene, is listed too. Introduction My interest in recent shells from the Red Sea dates from about 1996. Since then, I have been, now and then, trying to obtain information on this subject. Recently I decide to stop gathering information in a haphazard way and to do it more properly. This resulted in a survey of approximately 1,420 references (Van Gemert, 2010). Since then, this survey has been enlarged considerably and contains now approximately 2,100 references. They are presented here. Scope In principle every publication in which mollusks are reported to live or have lived in the Red Sea should be listed in the survey. This means that besides primary literature, i.e. articles in which researchers are reporting their finds for the first time, secondary and tertiary literature, i.e. reviews, monographs, books, etc are to be included too. These publications were written not only by a wide range of authors ranging from amateur shell collectors to profesional malacologists but also by people interested in other fields. This implies that not only malacological journals and books should be considered, but also publications from other fields or disciplines, such as environmental pollution, toxicology, parasitology, aquaculture, fisheries, biochemistry, biogeography, geology, sedimentology, ecology, archaeology, Egyptology and palaeontology, in which Red Sea shells are mentioned.

    Carnets Geol. 18 (12) E-ISSN 1634-0744 DOI 10.4267/2042/68549 The Oligocene mollusc types of Gaetano ROVERETO from Santa Giustina and Sassello (NW Italy) Maria Cristina BONCI 1, 2 1, 3 Gian Mario DABOVE 1, 4 Michele PIAZZA Abstract: The present paper examines the type specimens of the bivalve and gastropod taxa descri- bed by Gaetano ROVERETO in the years 1897-1914 coming from the Oligocene rocks of Santa Giustina and Sassello areas (Molare Formation, Tertiary Piedmont Basin, Central Liguria, NW Italy). These taxa are part of the "Collezione BTP" (BTP Collection) housed at the Dipartimento di Scienze della Terra, dell'Ambiente e della Vita - DISTAV - of the Università di Genova. The collecting sites reported in the ROVERETO's papers and indicated on labels have been reinvestigated in the field. 22 taxa (6 gastropods and 16 bivalves) are revised and re-documented; 6 have been recognized as younger synonyms of other species, the others are valid taxa. The majority of this fauna is restricted to the Oligocene time and to the Tertiary Piedmont Basin.
