Brockmeier1*† and on behalf of the BRaDP1T Consortium Abstract Background: Glaesserella parasuis, the causative agent of Glӓsser’s disease, is widespread in swine globally resulting in significant economic losses to the swine industry. Prevention of Glӓsser’s disease in pigs has been plagued with an inability to design broadly protective vaccines, as many bacterin based platforms generate serovar or strain specific immunity. Subunit vaccines are of interest to provide protective immunity to multiple strains of G. parasuis. Selected proteins for subunit vaccination should be widespread, highly conserved, and surface exposed. Results: Two candidate proteins for subunit vaccination (RlpB and VacJ) against G. parasuis were identified using random mutagenesis and an in vitro organ culture system. Pigs were vaccinated with recombinant RlpB and VacJ, outer membrane proteins with important contributions to cellular function and viability. Though high antibody titers to the recombinant proteins and increased interferon-γ producing cells were found in subunit vaccinated animals, the pigs were not protected from developing systemic disease. Conclusions: It appears there may be insufficient RlpB and VacJ exposed on the bacterial surface for antibody to bind, preventing high RlpB and VacJ specific antibody titers from protecting animals from G. parasuis. Additionally, this work confirms the importance of utilizing the natural host species when assessing the efficacy of vaccine candidates. Sent home early from Robert F. Scott’s Discovery expedition, seven years later turning back less than 100 miles from the South Pole to save his men from certain death, and then in 1914 suffering disaster at the start of the Endurance expedition as his ship was trapped and crushed by ice, he seems an unlikely hero whose deeds would endure to this day. But leadership, courage, wisdom, trust, empathy, and strength define the man. Shackleton’s spirit continues to inspire in the 100th year after the rescue of the Endurance crew from Elephant Island. This exhibit is a learning collaboration between the Rauner Special Collections Library and “Pole to Pole,” an environmental studies course taught by Ross Virginia examining climate change in the polar regions through the lens of history, exploration and science. King and the Scott Polar Research Institute The Scott Polar Research Institute (SPRI) is housed ina hand- some building on Lensfield Road, Cambridge, England. Its library is the core and Harry King, former head librarian, was until his retirement its central force. From 1955 until he step- ped down in 1983, Harry King’s skill and humanitarian vision of what a library should be provided scholars of the Arctic and Antarctic enlightened access to what is now internationally known as the finest collection of polar material in the world. The discriminating growth of this renowned collection was due to the constructive relationship between Harry King and the director, the late Dr. Brian Roberts. Dr. Roberts, a polar explorer and scholar, combined the twin posts of research associate at SPRI and head of the Polar Regions Division of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. His appointment of Harry King was inspired. Though of very different training and backgrounds, they found their respective visions comple- mentary. Among their achievements is their Co-editing of the institute’s 19-volume library catalogue published in 1976. Together with their respective talents and the assistance of Ann Savours, as former archivist, they are to be credited for SPRI’s highinternational reputation.     On first looking into Loewe’s papers Michael Piggott In an obituary for the June 1974 issue of The University Gazette, ‘D.J.’ noted that Fritz Loewe ‘founded this University’s department of Meteor- ology’ and for 25 years he ‘helped train many present well-known Australian meteorologists, conducted research into both glaciology and meteorology (he was a co-discoverer of the Southern Tropical Jet Stream), and achieved international recog- nition for the department.’1 What follows aims to profile one of our most important collections and the man behind that obituary’s masterly summary. Who was Loewe; what is in his collection; why is it significant; and what is its contem- porary relevance? KOEHN Leadership in Crisis: Ernest Shackleton and the Epic Voyage of the Endurance For scientific discovery give me Scott; for speed and efficiency of travel give me Amundsen; but when disaster strikes and all hope is gone, get down on your knees and pray for Shackleton. — Sir Raymond Priestley, Antarctic Explorer and Geologist On January 18, 1915, the ship Endurance, carrying a highly celebrated British polar expedition, froze into the icy waters off the coast of Antarctica. The leader of the expedition, Sir Ernest Shackleton, had planned to sail his boat to the coast through the Weddell Sea, which bounded Antarctica to the north, and then march a crew of six men, supported by dogs and sledges, to the Ross Sea on the opposite side of the continent (see Exhibit 1).1 Deep in the southern hemisphere, it was early in the summer, and the Endurance was within sight of land, so Shackleton still had reason to anticipate reaching shore. The ice, however, was unusually thick for the ship’s latitude, and an unexpected southern wind froze it solid around the ship. Within hours the Endurance was completely beset, a wooden island in a sea of ice. More than eight months later, the ice still held the vessel. Instead of melting and allowing the crew to proceed on its mission, the ice, moving with ocean currents, had carried the boat over 670 miles north.2 As it moved, the ice slowly began to soften, and the tremendous force of distant currents alternately broke apart the floes—wide plateaus made of thousands of tons of ice—and pressed them back together, creating rift lines with huge piles of broken ice slabs.
