Editorial THE midsummer vacation is approaching; but before us now .', loo:n up the Public Examinations, both Senior and Junior. This year has been a most interrupted one. The formation of a guard of honour for General Birdwood, the Prince, and the Governor- General, and the prepartion for the two school functions have caused a considerable loss of time. In spite of this, we have every confidence that our candidates will uphold the reputation of the School, and that the Senior boys will annex a fair share of the Scholarships offered. Owing to a scarcity of football matches, the season finished earlier than usual. Reviewing the matches, it can be said that the Firsts have had a fairly successful season. At the beginning of the year they did not do what was expected of them, but they showed marked improvement after the issue of the last Magazine. In the Grade matches they defeated Gregory Terrace (53-0), and were defeated by Ipswich (9-0) ;:nd Nudgee (8-2). In the inter- School matches they defeated Ip.wich (9-6) and Southport (28-0). ; nd were defeated by Nudgee (12-0), and Toowoomba (9-3). They were unsuccessful in a match against the Old Boys during Jubilee celebrations. After midwinter Carson and McCoombe left, and Batema.n, R. E. was unable to play, owing to an injured knee. ' Hargreaves filled the |position of captain. The Honour Caps this year were won by R. E. Bateman, best back ; J. C. Dent, best forward ; S. A. Trout, next best player. A special one was awarded to J. G. Hargreaves. Congratulations to these four, and also to those who obtained colours. They were :-Backs: W. C. 8 Brisbane Grammar School Magazine. Patterson, R. E. Bateman,. S. A. Trout, C. S. Billington, J. G. Hargreaves, S. E. Isaacs; forwards: J. C. Dent, J. Nicklin, W. Wilson, J. B. Klaassen, A. R. East. The Second XIII. have this year won, for the third time in succession, the Premiership of their grade. They suffered the usual luck of a Second XIII., in losing men to fill vacancies in the Firsts; McCoombe, Foxton and Bateman were called upon. In spite of this loss, the Seconds won six matches and drew one. They were trained by Mr. Connal, and we desire to express our appreciation of his untiring efforts in coaching them to victory. This year, the Shield, presented by Mr. Bousfield for com- petition airong the Lower School Forms, for all round play, was won by IID. Congratulations to the form on its all round abiitv, and also to the coaches, A. B. Carvozso and J. C. Dent, who ably helped them on to victory. The Annual Athletic Sports were held on Friday, 17th September, and despite the rain, the officials carried most oi the programme through in a most efficient manner. The rest of the events were decided on the Turf on Tuesday, 21st. The " Courier " Cup, for the Champion Athlete, was won by W. \. Tho.nson. with J. G. Hargreaves runner-up. A. R. East won the 440 Yards Championship; S. A. Trout won the 220 Yards Champion-hip; and J. G. Hargreaves won the 100 Yards Championship. R. pratten won the Under 16 Championship, and W. M. Coates won the Under 14 Championship. The third Annual Sports' Meeting of the Queensland Secondary Schools' Association w.,s held on the Exhibition Ground, on Saturday, 23rd September. Southport were unable to co:npete, and thus seven schoo's conm- peted. The Shield was won by Nudgee College (45 points) ; the School was second with 14 points. Thomnson showed up promin- ently, while East and Hargreaves obtained places. Colours were awarded to Thomson, Hargreaves, East, Trout, Bateman, R.

Submitted in full requirement for the degree of Master of Arts (Research) Division of Research & Commercialisation Queensland University of Technology 2014 Keywords Anglo-Boer War, Boer, Brisbane Courier, Dawson, Dickson, Kitchener, Kruger, Orange Free State, Philp, Queensland, Queenslander, Transvaal, War. ii Abstract This thesis examines the myth that Queensland was the first colonial government to offer troops to support England in the fight against the Boers in the Transvaal and Orange Free State in 1899. The offer was unconstitutional because on 10 July 1899, the Premier made it in response to a request from the Commandant and senior officers of the Queensland Defence Force that ‘in the event of war breaking out in South Africa the Colony of Queensland could send a contingent of troops and a machine gun’. War was not declared until 10 October 1899. Under Westminster government conventions, the Commandant’s request for military intervention in an overseas war should have been discussed by the elected legislators in the House. However, Parliament had gone into recess on 24 June following the Federation debate. During the critical 10-week period, the politicians were in their electorates preparing for the Federation Referendum on 2 September 1899, after which Parliament would resume.

This term so far we have commended numerous students on receiving their diligence certificates, either Pro Summa or Pro Diligentia Awards. This is a crucial element in sustaining our academic culture in the On Thursday, 11 May at the Senior School Assembly I informed the School as it demonstrates to the boys that we, as a School, value hard boys that I will be absent for the last 4 ½ weeks of this term and the first work. We regularly stress to the boys that we are proud of them if they week of Term 3. I will be spending this time on sabbatical leave, thus apply themselves diligently as this will be required of them throughout enabling me to undertake some activities that would otherwise not be life.

The main campus of nearly eight hectares is on Gregory Terrace overlooking the Brisbane CBD and is the site for the delivery of the main academic program across Years 5 to 12, as well as the Indoor Sports Centre and boarding house.

He was a bank officer, serving with the Bank of Australasia. 1st Grade Career: (season commencing) 1902 Acton Geoffrey Brockwell Born:26 December 1970 in Bat: Bowl: Died: in 1st Grade Career: (season commencing) 1991, 1993, 1995 Adams Brett James Born:28 November 1958 in Townsville Bat:RHB Bowl: WK Died: in Brother of RG Adams He represented Queensland Primary Schools in 1970/71; and Queensland Schoolboys in each season from 1974/75 to 1976/77, being captain in the latter two series. He also played grade cricket for Sandgate-Redcliffe. His father and sons CL and JA Adamson all played Minor County cricket for Durham. His brother-in-law to Lewis Vaughan Lodge, who played international football for England He played Minor Country cricket in England for Durham from 1894 to 1914. He was also a rugby player representing Durham and England and touring Australia in 1899.

    Newsletter Week 1 Term 4 Friday 11 October 2019 BGS Parent and Son Kokoda Trek | September Holidays In this issue BGSState Newsletter Tennis Tournament| Lead Article Teacher Recognised Duke of Edinburgh Award Headmaster Anthony Micallef Welcome to Term 4 I would like to welcome the BGS community to Term 4. I trust everyone had a satisfying break in preparation for this important term. Throughout the holidays, many students actively prepared for the academic and co-curricular rigours of Term 4. The BGS Track and Field boys prepared for their season with a holiday training camp, while others started pre- season training ahead of Term 1 2020. Students also embarked on their Public Purpose expeditions in Cambodia and Kokoda. Thank you to all staff and students who participated in these activities over the break. Your commitment to the School is appreciated. Working together to achieve a common goal is the essence of being human – it is knowing and feeling that you belong to something special. As we start Term 4, I congratulate the student body for rounding out Term 3 admirably. The boys maintained decorum and behaved respectfully while completing assessments and co-curricular responsibilities to high standards. I also thank the Year 12 cohort for conducting themselves appropriately at the formal. The Class of 2019 was in good spirits and gentlemanly in their manner. I hope the boys have returned from their holiday well rested and ready for a relatively short and constructive term. It is important for every student to see this term as a down payment on further academic success rather than a slide into holidays.

Harry left TGS a year ago to attend Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana to pursue a Basketball career. His team has just won the CIF State Championship. At 6ft8 Harry is one of the tallest on the team; year 7 student Owen Austin couldn't get close.
