With so many comic-to-film adaptations following the trends of action movies, my goal was to adapt the popular comic book, Batman, into a screenplay that is not an action film. The screenplay, House of Cards, follows the original character of Miranda Greene as she attempts to understand insanity in Gotham’s most famous criminal, the Joker. The research for this project includes a detailed look at the comic book’s publication history, as well as previous film adaptations of Batman, and Batman in other relevant media. -

Summary: Science fiction/superhero film based on the graphic novel written by Alan Moore and illustrated by Dave Gibbons. Set in an alternative 1985 US governed by Richard Nixon with occasional flashbacks to prior events. Masked superheroes were a normal part of American life through the 1960s. In Vietnam, the Comedian (Morgan) wields a flame thrower and engages in ground combat operations until the radioactive blue giant Dr. Manhattan (Crudup) arrives, at the behest of President Nixon, and ends the war in a matter of weeks. A formation of surrendering Viet Cong bow down to the Dr. like a god. In a Saigon bar shortly thereafter, the Comedian is confronted by his pregnant Vietnamese mistress about the future of their unborn child and he calmly shoots her. After Vietnam, masked superheroes were forced into retirement. However, as Cold War tensions between the US and the Soviet Union begin to rise, a washed up but no less determined masked vigilante named Rorschach (Haley) discovers a plot to kill and discredit all past and present superheroes. As Rorschach and his small group of retired superheroes investigate, they discover a deeper conspiracy with links to their shared past and catastrophic consequences for the future. -

THE STORY OF FOUNTAIN: HARD FACTS AND SOFT SPECULATION Thierry de Duve ABSTRACT Thierry de Duve’s essay is anchored to the one and perhaps only hard fact that we possess regarding the story of Fountain: its photo in The Blind Man No. 2, triply captioned “Fountain by R. Mutt,” “Photograph by Alfred Stieglitz,” and “THE EXHIBIT REFUSED BY THE INDEPENDENTS,” and the editorial on the facing page, titled “The Richard Mutt Case.” He examines what kind of agency is involved in that triple “by,” and revisits Duchamp’s intentions and motivations when he created the fictitious R. Mutt, manipulated Stieglitz, and set a trap to the Independents. De Duve concludes with an invitation to art historians to abandon the “by” questions (attribution, etc.) and to focus on the “from” questions that arise when Fountain is not seen as a work of art so much as the bearer of the news that the art world has radically changed. Mentally I was not spelling art with a capital A. — Beatrice Wood1 No doubt, Marcel Duchamp’s best known and most controversial readymade is a men’s urinal tipped on its side, signed R. Mutt, dated 1917, and titled Fountain. The 2017 centennial of Fountain brought us a harvest of new books and articles on the famous or infamous urinal. I read most of them in the hope of gleaning enough newly verified facts to curtail my natural tendency to speculate. But newly verified facts are few and far between. -

THE BIBLE & CRITICAL THEORY My Beloved is a Bass Line: Musical, De-colonial Interventions in Song Criticism and Sacred Erotic Discourse Heidi Epstein, University of Saskatchewan Abstract How might musical settings of the Song of Songs provide critical interventions in the politics of love? This case study builds a womanist intertextual matrix for the Song such that its amatory and horticultural language can be reinterpreted as irreducibly “de-colonial.” Reread through Chela Sandoval’s model of love, Alice Walker’s search for her foremothers’ and foresisters’ gardens, and Toni Morrison’s “commentary” on the Song (Beloved), the biblical text circulates de-colonial energies. And, given that music figures centrally in these womanists’ genealogies of love, a de-colonial reading of the Song mandates deconstruction of a subaltern musical archive within the Eurocentric discourse of sacred eroticism, a discourse that the Song sustains as an Ur-text. If the biblical female protagonist’s longing and seeking are reread as de-colonial and trickster-esque, she begets a subaltern musical family tree—audible today in the “Shulammitic” bass playing and protest singing of Meshell Ndegeocello. Some of these meanings shall emerge over the course of this article as I re-read the Song of Song’s imagery and its musicality in four phases through womanist intertexts by Chela Sandoval, Toni Morrison, Alice Walker, and Meshell Ndegeocello. -

Pitcher, Durham University INTRODUCTION: COMICS, CULTURE AND THE CLASSICS Nine episodes into the third season of the NBC TV drama Heroes, Hiro Nakamura finds himself in a predicament.1 Like many of the characters on the show, Hiro has recently discovered that he has superhuman powers—in his case, the ability to bend space and time. However, an enemy has just wiped the last eighteen years of his memory. Hiro now has the knowledge and persona of a ten-year old. How is he to go about rediscovering what he has lost and regain his sense of his mission? Hiro’s friend Ando suggests that they should go to some place that will help him remember. Hiro eagerly agrees, and teleports both of them to somewhere he thinks can do this: ‘the source of all knowledge’,2 the sort of locale where wise men gather, like ‘the Greek oracle at Delphi, the Library at Alexandria’.Ando is disconcerted when he discovers that his friend has whisked him to a comics store. Geekiness is a prominent part of Hiro’s character. Nonetheless, Heroes in general, and Hiro’s quest to recover his identity through comic books in particular, illuminate the position that comics hold in contemporary popular culture. In the first place, the show exemplifies the extent of the ‘cross-fertilisation’that can now take place between comics and higher-profile forms of cultural production, such as TV shows, films, and novels. Heroes is implicated at all levels with the comics industry: its plot (as we have just seen), often includes them; comics-related in-jokes abound;3 until November 2008, the comic book writer Jeph Loeb was one of its co-executive producers; and one episode featured a cameo appearance from the former president of Marvel Comics, Stan Lee.4 Of course, Heroes is a show about people with super-powers. -

The largest subseries is composed of manuscript material, including correspondence with publishers and editors, typewritten and handwritten drafts of books, and research materials. As well, there are fifteen boxes of Gifford's notebooks, which contain partial drafts of books as well as individual poems, journal entries, and memoranda. There is also a significant file of correspondence, notable primarily for the six boxes of letters Gifford wrote to his longtime friend and associate, bookseller Marshall Clements. Finally, the collection contains copies of books and other published material used in his research. Biographical / Historical Poet, biographer, novelist, memoirist, and essayist, Barry Gifford was born October 18, 1946 in Chicago to Adolph, a pharmacist, and Dorothy Colby Gifford, a model. He was raised in Chicago and in Key West and Tampa, Florida. Gifford attended the University of Missouri where he played baseball. -

Not least, thank you to Alissa Feffer for cherishing the ‘real’ me. iii ABSTRACT Author: Adam Berzak Title: The Power of Subtext and the Politics of Closure: An Examination of Self, Representation, and Audience in 3 Narrative Forms Institution: Florida Atlantic University Thesis Advisor: Quentin Youngberg Degree: Master of Arts Year: 2010 This thesis explores the ways that certain artists—including Joseph Conrad, Alan Moore, Richard Attenborough, and Francis Ford Coppola—break from their inherited traditions in order to speak from an alternative perspective to western discourse. Conventional narrative formulas prescribe that meaning will be revealed in a definitive end, but all of the texts discussed reveal other avenues through which it is discerned. In Heart of Darkness, the tension between two divergent narratives enables Conrad to speak beyond his social context and imperialist limitations to demonstrate that identity is socially constructed. In Watchmen, Moore breaks from comic convention to illustrate ways meaning may be ascertained despite the lack of plot ends. -

URL : http:// journals.openedition.org/essais/646 ; DOI : 10.4000/essais.646 Essais Stanley Kubrick at the Interface of film and television Matthew Melia During his keynote address at the 2016 conference Stanley Kubrick: A Retrospective1 Jan Harlan2 announced that Napoleon, Kubrick’s great unrea- lised project3 would finally be produced, as a HBO TV mini-series, directed by Cary Fukunaga (True Detective, HBO) and executively produced by Steven Spielberg. He also suggested that had Kubrick survived into the 21st century he would not only have chosen TV as a medium to work in, he would also have contributed to the contemporary post-millennium zeitgeist of cinematic TV drama. There has been little news on the development of the project since and we are left to speculate how this cinematic spectacle eventually may (or may not) turn out on the “small screen”. Alison Castle’s monolithic edited collection of research and production material surrounding Napoleon4 gives some idea of the scale, ambition and problematic nature of re-purposing such a momen- tous project for television.
