2018 Commonwealth Games Gold Coast, Australia 4 – 15 April 2018 2018 Commonwealth Games Gold Coast, Australia 4 – 15 April 2018 The Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games will be the largest sporting event Australia will see this decade and the biggest sporting spectacular the Gold Coast has ever seen. As the first regional Australian city to ever host a Commonwealth Games, the Gold Coast will celebrate a great Games in a great city leaving great memories and great benefits for all. The city will shine on the world sporting stage and the promotional exposure for business, trade, investment, tourism and events will herald a new era in the region’s growth and maturity. The GC2018 brand embraces the three pillars of - The Place, The Event and The Sport. On 4 April 2018, over 6,600 athletes and team officials from 70 nations and territories will converge on the Gold Coast for an 11 day sporting and cultural event. With the support of close to 15,000 passionate and friendly volunteers, a spectacle of 18 sports and 7 para-sports will be contested and broadcast to a cumulative global audience of 1.5 billion. Gold Coast will host the largest integrated Para-Sport program in Commonwealth Games history, hosting up to 300 para-athletes and 38 medal events across seven sports - an increase of 45 per cent more athletes and 73 per cent more medals compared to the para- sport competition staged at the last Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014. The GC2018 Para-Sport program has been developed by the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) and GC2018 in consultation with the International Paralympic Committee and Commonwealth Games Australia (CGA) and will include medal events in the sports of; Athletics Swimming Lawn Bowls Powerlifting Track Cycling Table Tennis Paratriathlon. Paratriathlon will make its Commomwealth Games debut in Gold Coast and the first ever wheelchair marathon (T54) at a Commonwealth Games will take to the streets and communities of the Gold Coast. Glasgow 2014 Round up The Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games boasted the biggest ever number of para sports medal events in Commonwealth Games history, with medal 22 events across five sports (swimming, athletics, lawn bowls, powerlifting and cycling). Team Scotland selected 22 Para Sport athletes (including directors, guides & pilots) competing at the games in 14 events across 5 sports across. Athletics (5 athletes 1 Guide) - Meggan Dawson-Farrell T54 (T54 1500m), Samantha Kinghorn T53 (T54 1500m), Libby Clegg T12 with guide Mikail Huggins (T12 100m), Lewis Clow (T37 100m), Jason MacLean (T37 100m). Swimming (2 athletes) - Erraid Davies (SB9 100m Breastroke), Craig Rodgie (S14 200m Freestyle) Lawn Bowls (5 athletes 2 directors) - B2/B3 Mixed Pairs Robert Conway with Director Ron McArthur & Irene Edgar with Director David Thomas, B6/7/8 Open Triples Kevin Wallace, Michael Simpson & Billy Allan. Cycling (3 Cyclists 3 pilots) - Aileen McGlynn MBE & Louise Haston, Laura Cluxton & Fiona Duncan, Neil Fachie MBE & Craig MacLean MBE. Power lifting (1 Powerlifter) - Micky Yule (Heavyweight) Total – 22 athletes, directors and pilots. Out of the 66 medal opportunities in the 22 events, Scotland won a total of 7 medals or 11% of the total medals available for para events and winning 3 golds (14% of the 22 available). All the para athletes had significant performances as part of Team Scotland, many setting personal bests and seven returning with well-earned medals. (Appendix 5 provides an overview of previous games statistics). 10 (45%) out of the 22 competitors were female and 12 (55%) were male. 8 (36%) of the 22 para-athletes were under 25, with the oldest member of the team being 67 and the youngest member of the team being 13 years old. 6 out of the 16 (38%) had a visual impairment, two (13%) had cerebral palsy, two (13%) had spina bifida, one (5%) hd a spinal injury, two (13%) were amputees, one (5%) had Perthes Disease, one (5%) arachnoiditis and one (5%) with an intellectual impairment. The other six out of the 22 para team members were directors, pilots and a guide. It was the first Commonwealth Games for (95%), 21 out of the 22, para competitors. The athletes came from the length and breadth of Scotland – from Shetland to the Borders.     Scottish Disability Sport - The First Fifty Years Richard Brickley MBE Foreword I was delighted to be asked by Chief Executive Gavin Macleod to record the first fifty years of Scottish Disability Sport, to mark the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of the Association. Initially the project was intended to be small but the more I researched, the more it brought back memories of great athletes, superb volunteers and great times. I became determined to try and do justice to as many as those great people as possible. I am certain I shall have forgotten key people in the eyes of others and if so I apologise profusely. For almost four decades SDS has been for me a way of life. The volunteers I have had the pleasure of working with for almost three decades are those I remember with great fondness, particularly during the early years. I applaud the many athletes who contributed to the rich history and success of SDS over fifty years. Outstanding volunteers like Bob Mitchell, Mary Urquhart, David Thomson, Jean Stone, Chris Cohen and Colin Rains helped to develop and sustain my passion for disability sport. I have been privileged to work with exceptional professionals like Ken Hutchison, Derek Casey, Liz Dendy, Paul Bush, Bob Price, Louise Martin, Sheila Dobie, Fiona Reid, Eddie McConnell, Gavin MacLeod, Mary Alison, Heather Lowden, Lawrie Randak, Tracey McCillen, Archie Cameron and many others whose commitment to inclusive sport has been obvious and long lasting.
