Appendix: The Recordings These are the URLs of the original locations where I found the recordings used in this book. Those without a URL came from a cassette tape, LP or CD in my personal collection, or from now-defunct YouTube or Grooveshark web pages. I had many of the other recordings in my collection already, but searched for online sources to allow the reader to hear what I heard when writing the book. Naturally, these posted “videos” will disappear over time, although most of them then re- appear six months or a year later with a new URL. If you can’t find an alternate location, send me an e-mail and let me know. In the meantime, I have provided low-level mp3 files of the tracks that are not available or that I have modified in pitch or speed in private listening vaults where they can be heard. This way, the entire book can be verified by listening to the same re- cordings and works that I heard. For locations of these private sound vaults, please e-mail me and I will send you the links. Women have participated in numerous ways, and in a variety of complex cultural contexts, throughout the history of jazz in New Orleans. While we do see traces of women’s participation in extant New Orleans jazz histories, we seldom see women presented as central to jazz culture. Therefore, they tend to appear to occupy minor or supporting roles, if they appear at all. This Research Study uses a feminist perspective to increase our knowledge of women and gender in New Orleans jazz history, roughly between 1880 and 1980, with an emphasis on the earlier years. It was a musical family on both sides. Louis Douroux was a trumpet player. His brother Lawrence played trumpet and piano and brother Irving played trumpet and trombone. Placide recalled that Irving was also an arranger and practiced six hours a day. “He was one of the smoothest trombone players that ever lived. He played on the Steamer Capitol with Fats Pichon‟s Band.” Olivia played violin, cornet and piano. Dolly‟s uncle, Manuel Manetta, played and taught just about every instrument known to man. -

We recently excavated by Jerry Brock this artifact from a backlog of materials in the collection of Orin Blackstone, the New Orleans-based jazz discographer 65 “Curator’s Commentary” and publisher of Jazzfinder and Playback by Bruce Boyd Raeburn magazines. It was originally obtained from West Coast saxophonist Paul Howard by jazzologist Irving Jacobs, who wrote an article on Howard for the July 1949 issue of Playback. -

1 Musical Contests - 2 Woman Pianists - 18 Sports & New Orleans Jazz - 31 Louisiana Brass Bands - 38 Jazz Music in the 20's - 52 Eva Gauthier - 66 Mattie Louise Robards - 92 2 MUSICAL CONTESTS FROM THE GREEKS TO NEW ORLEANS It could have been Chris Kelly (the king of the Blues in New Orleans in the 1920's) challenging and winning from Louis Armstrong, or Kid Rena out blowing his challenger. The man 'bucking' or 'cutting' contests spoken about by the early New Orleans jazzmen have a long and honorable history. Its origins lie in the ancient myths of Greece. The earliest challenger was probably the Phrygian Marsyas. Finding Athena's flute, it so inspired him that he challenged the lyre-playing God Apollo to a musical contest. Naturally Apollo won and Marsyas was flayed (stripped of his skin), a very severe penalty for his presumption. Another Greek myth has Misenus challenging the gods of the sea to a competition on the trumpet. He also lost and was drowned by the god of the waters, Triton. The activities of the Greek poets, dramatists and musicians (in Greece all were linked together), may seem somewhat schematic to us today; the importance of music in the Greek society was universal in scope and constantly rising; its practice was linked closely with supporting popular events of national importance. The cultural activity was as popular with the society as the accomplishments of its athletics. The accomplishments in music were presented and accepted in the true competitive spirit. The Greeks gave these competitions the name of Agones. -

THOSE OTHER NEW ORLEANS MUSICIANS BIODISCOGRAPHIES This is a look at some New Orleans musicians (ie musicians born in or near New Orleans or who moved to New Orleans at an early age and “learnt their trade” in New Orleans) who, in the opinion of the writers, have received less attention than they merit in recent years or whose recording careers are obscure. Our choice of musicians is open-ended. If we feel that a musician merits more attention than he or she has hitherto received we will try to put that right by including him or her in our list. We are already working on a number of other musicians who will appear on the list at intervals including a group of piano players. Our aim is to make these players more accessible by listing all their recordings whether or not they were issued. Unissued sessions have a habit of turning up years after the event so, with one or two exceptions, should never be written off. George Buck has acquired a number of catalogues and is gradually issuing previously unissued sessions or sessions unavailable for a long time from the likes of Southland. We eagerly await his future offerings. Some musicians on our list are still being researched by a number of musical scholars (and ourselves!) so we do not claim that this is the last word in many cases. We regard this as a co-operative venture which embraces all those with a love of New Orleans music and we welcome corrections/additions to the information presented and suggestions as to musicians that might be added to the list. -
