    Marine Corps Base Hawaii “Must Know” for Moving to Hawaii 2018 is a RIMPAC year! This event is held every two years by Commander, U.S. Pacific Fleet (PACFLT) and is a multinational maritime exercise that takes place in and around the Hawaiian Islands. Expect to see lots of military personnel from various participating nations at the many military facilities. Please remember too - Hawaii (www.gohawaii.com/en) is a very popular travel and vacation destination! Expect to see lots of tourists, summer time events and activities. Hawaii is also building its very first rail transit (www.honolulutransit.org/) and construction will be going on for about the next 10 years! This has created additional traffic congestion across the H1 area of the island. IN SUMMARY – Expect to see lots of people and experience traffic delays at all times of the day and night as well as many lodging facilities being fully booked. Shipping your car and household goods to Hawaii, particularly from the East Coast USA, can take a long time. Current estimates are around 47 days for your vehicle to arrive to Hawaii once it has been shipped. PLEASE NOTE: Rental car charges are NOT reimbursable in conjunction with a PCS. While operating a rental car service members will rate the same entitlements as if operating their own POV. Please plan accordingly. We recommend you speak with your local military finance office or an MCCS Personal Financial Management Program (PFMP) staff member prior to your PCS to go over your entitlements and create a budget. Because Hawaii is a tourist destination rental car rates can be very high.
