All of our meetings will occur at the College of Architecture, University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Meetings will be held in Architecture Hall. Tsz Yan Ng and Peggy Deamer are the theme editors. 74:1 H20 This issue is currently in production and all essays are under review. We received over 60 submissions. Alpa Nawre and Carey Clouse are the theme editors. 74:2 othering A call has been posted, deadline 01 Feb 2020. David Theodore and Tanya Southcott are the theme editors. 75:1 To be determined Board Organization: Associate Editor, Design I have nominated Carolina Dayer to continue as Associate Editor, Design for 2019-20. We will need to determine in this meeting if we want to move forward. Online essay The first online essay was published on 12 Sept. http://www.jaeonline.org/articles/design-scholarship/what-about-typology#/page1/ 4 Review Processes In June 2019, two essays were removed from the work issue. The essays and the response from the ACSA can be found in the Additional Materials of this document. The essays were described as journalistic and contained unchecked accusations. Since that time, I have endeavored to determine best practices around fact checking. According to Cameron Barr, Managing Editor, the Washington Post, major newspapers do not have a written document that outlines a fact-checking process. Nor do they have a corps of fact-checkers. He did offer the following advice: Any statements made must: 1.) Be on the record (not anonymous – if anonymous, one editor must know the identity) 2.) Have some form of contemporaneous corroboration, and 3.) Have documented contemporaneous corroboration (photograph, diary, phone conversation, email), though this last is really the “gold standard” for review. An article can go forward with only the first two. Reach out to the accuser, but be mindful of the timing. Be fair. No one should be surprised by what is written. Get a good first amendment lawyer. The process of editing and collecting all the material for the design content of issue 73:2 WORK has been challenging and arduous. The excellent work done by the design committee with all the insightful reviews and comments to authors continues to be praised by authors of both, accepted and rejected essays. The design content for the WORK issue consists of four Design as Scholarship pieces and five micro-narratives, one of which is a combined piece that gathers the research of two authors. In addition, one Design as Scholarship piece, accepted to be published on-line during the reviewing process of issue 73:1, was finalized and can be found at the JAE website. The JAE team is happy and honored to welcome three new members to the design committee, Ana Miljacki (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), Heather Flood (Woodbury University) and McLain Clutter (University of Michigan). 6 Associate Editor, Reviews Report Between March 30 and August 30, three reviews have been published, well below last year’s rate of two per month. Seven more reviews are planned for publication shortly. About fifteen more solicited reviews are currently in production, including a fourth artifact review. Associate Editor Ivan Rupnik cycled off of the committee and David Theodore took on the role as of July 2019. 7 Managing Editor Report 7 Fall 2019 Journal of Architectural Education Managing Editor Report Sept 20 - 22nd, 2019 - JAE Fall Board Meeting | Lincoln, NE Managing Editor Summary Since the last JAE Editorial Board Meeting in March 2019, we have assembled the “Work” issue of JAE. We received 120+ submissions, with 60 Scholarship of Design submissions, 32 Micro-Narrative submissions, and 29 Design as Scholarship submisisons. Out of these, 5 Scholarship of Design submissions, 5 Micro-Narrative submissions, and 4 Design as Scholarship submissions were accepted, along with 3 Opinion pieces and 1 Curation piece. While in production, ACSA decided to pull two of the Opinion pieces due to their “journalistic” nature. As Marc states in his introduction to this issue, there was a lot of internal discussion around these essays and we will be working to “improve the editorial process and to include both essays in a future issue.” Any questions or comments about these essays should be directed to Marc. As we look toward the future, the review process for JAE 74.1 “H2O” is well underway. We received about 90 initial submissions. Of these 90, we had 81 viable submissions: 34 Design as Scholarship submissions, 32 Scholarship of Design submissions, and 15 Micro-Narrative submissions. The “H2O” issue will go to press in February 2020, with a projected ship date of March 11, 2020. Since ACSA’s Annual Meeting will also begin March 11, 2020, we will push on the production side to have copies of “H2O” available at the meeting. Further still, the call for papers for JAE 74.2 “Othering” is curently posted, with a deadline of February 1, 2020. And, after this, it will be time for JAE’s 75th issue! Finally, I would like to express my gratitude to everyone on the editorial board for their hard work and help guiding me through my first issue as JAE’s Managing Editor. I would also like to acknowledge our new copy editor, Cameron MacDonnell, our layout designer, Pascale Vonier, and our production editor at Taylor & Francis, Jennifer Leedom, along with Amanda Gann and Michelle Sturges from ACSA, for their contributions to the “Work” issue. 2 Fall 2019 Managing Editor Report JAE Online: Content JAEOnline.org is an online platform used to post review articles and references to online downloads of print issues and articles through Taylor & Francis. In September, we had a JAE Online first with the posting of an online-only arti- cle/project by Patty Heyda. This piece was not published in any print issues and shows the potential for online-only content for JAE Online outside of review articles. David has taken over as Reviews Editor and is working with our copy editor and I to prep more review content for JAE Online. The “Work” issue of JAE will also be posted to JAE Online in mid to late September.
