Lacourse, (Department of Geography) Departmental Member It has become increasingly clear that climate fluctuations during the Holocene interval were unusually frequent and rapid, and that our current understanding of the temporal and spatial distribution of these oscillations is incomplete. Little paleoenvironmental research has been undertaken on the windward side of the central Coast Mountains of British Columbia, Canada. Very high annual orographic precipitation totals, moderate annual temperatures regulated by the Pacific Ocean, and extreme topographic features result in a complex suite of microclimate conditions in this largely unstudied area. Dendroclimatological investigations conducted on a steep south-facing slope near Confederation and Franklin glaciers suggest that both mountain hemlock (Tsuga mertensiana) and subalpine fir (Abies lasiocarpa) trees at the site are limited by previous year mean and maximum summer temperatures. A regional subalpine fir chronology for the central and southern Coast Mountains indicates that subalpine fir trees at the study site experience physiological stress with warm summer temperatures, despite the high annual precipitation totals experienced there. This response is likely a result of the extreme gradient and the aspect of the slope at the sampling location, underscoring the importance of site characteristics on annual radial tree growth. Local (AD 1820-2008) and regional (AD 1700-2008) tree ring width chronologies were used to reconstruct iv previous July mean and maximum temperatures, explaining between 13% and 36% of the variance in climate. The proxy record features cool intervals that are comparable to other paleoenvironmental research from the region, and cyclical oscillations in temperature commonly associated with the El Niño Southern Oscillation and Pacific Decadal Oscillation. Century-scale fluctuations may be connected to changes in solar irradiance. Dendroglaciological investigations were undertaken at the confluence of the Confederation and Franklin glaciers with the intention of exploring the Holocene behaviour of low-elevation maritime glaciers in this region. These glaciers are suspected to be sensitive to variations in the mean position of winter freezing level heights and warm winter temperatures, and may respond differently to changes in climate than more continental glaciers. Buried wood samples were radiocarbon-dated and cross-dated to construct three floating chronologies. Float A (r = 0.467) suggests an early Little Ice Age advance of the two glaciers, and Float B (r = 0.466) suggests an early Tiedemann advance of Confederation Glacier. Float C (r = 0.519) is dated to the Garibaldi Phase of glacier expansion, but may not have been killed by glacial activity. The temporal synchronicity of these findings with glacial events documented throughout the region suggests a spatially coherent response of maritime and continental glaciers to the dominant climate–forcing mechanisms operating in Pacific North America throughout the late Holocene. The dendroclimatological and dendroglaciological findings of this study help to fill a spatial research gap in the current understanding of Holocene climate variations in British Columbia.     "BEING A GIRL WITHOUT BEING A GIRL": Gender and Mountaineering on Mount Waddingtotty 1926-36 KAREN ROUTLEDGE LIVE IN A CITY SHAPED BY MOUNTAINS. I first realize this while standing on top of one. It is 8:00 AM on the summit of Mount Baker, a Cascade Ivolcano just south of the American border. The summer morning is already scorching; snow glitters and melts at my feet. I am looking at the region where I have spent most of my life, but it has become another planet: alien, stunningly beautiful, yet somehow familiar. The view is dizzying; there's so much light, so much heat, so much air. All around me, peaks are stacked upon peaks, layers of paling blue fading into the sun-bleached sky. The sight of all this land at once is overwhelming. I know this place but not like this. Ironically, while Mount Baker's snow-capped plateau is a prominent landmark to Vancouverites, the city is utterly insignificant from here. Vancouver lies buried somewhere to the northwest, a squat grey mass in a valley of haze and smog, a sprawling city limited by mountains in three directions. I look down at this map made real before me and finally understand the extent to which geography shapes the way we live. The mountains that surround Vancouver are far more than landmarks, sources of income, and tourist beacons. We have changed these mountains and been changed by them. From their slopes and summits, countless city people have glimpsed not only their home from a different perspective but also their own lives, values, and priorities.

Some rivers may provide a more complete record of Holocene climate change than the glaciers in their headwaters. We illustrate these points by examining the record preserved in the upper part of the alluvial fill in the Nostetuko River valley in the southern Coast Mountains, British Columbia (Canada). Glacier advances in the upper part of the watershed triggered valley-wide aggradation and complex changes in river planform. Periods when glaciers were restricted in extent coincide with periods of incision of the valley fill and floodplain stability. As many as 10 overbank aggradation units are separated by peat layers containing tree roots and stems in growth position.

Grenville and Galleon Peak Canada, British Columbia, Coast Mountains, Homathko Icefield I FIRST LAID EYES upon the beautiful northeast face of Peak 9,331’ while walking across the Homathko Icefield in the early summer of 2016. Upon returning to the frontcountry, I was excited to find that the peak had not been climbed. Later that summer, I asked Fred Giroux if he would be interested in a mostly human-powered mission to the area. He was, and we spent the winter planning and training. On May 15, Fred and I began our epic journey out to the Homathko Icefield. We took a water taxi up Bute Inlet to Homathko Camp, then trekked across the Teaquahan Valley to the Galleon Valley. For four and a half days we slogged through the bush, skied, and were tossed around by our packs until we reached a campsite half a kilometer from Mt. Grenville (10,001’). We hadn’t weighed our packs, but we did decide to name them: Fred’s was Soul Crusher, and mine was Suffer Sack. We estimated them at around 85 pounds each. On May 25 we headed to the northwest face of Mt. Grenville. The face had been climbed in September 1991 by Michael Down and Alan Fletcher (on a heli-supported expedition), via a beautiful snow slope of about 50° to reach a ridge and then a gentle walk to the summit. To the right of that snow slope is a gorgeous steep face of snow, ice, and rock.

Areas surveyed were those deemed to warrant further investigation as identified during 1997-1998 overview assessments (G3 Consulting Ltd., 1998; 1998a). This report was prepared by G3 Consulting Ltd. on behalf of the Tatlayoko Woodlot Association (TWA), Tatlayoko Lake, BC, to identify areas of the watersheds recommended for Level 2 investigations that may lead to development of remediation prescriptions. Work was conducted in accordance with the Watershed Restoration Program, under the auspices of Forest Renewal BC.
