Litke Washington, D.C. 2016 Targum Song of Songs: Language and Lexicon Andrew W. Litke, Ph.D. Director: Edward M. Cook, Ph.D. Targum Song of Songs (TgSong) contains linguistic features from “literary” Aramaic as found in Targum Onqelos and Targum Jonathan, western Aramaic, eastern Aramaic, Biblical Aramaic, and Syriac. A similar mixing of linguistic features is evident in other targumim, and their language is collectively termed Late Jewish Literary Aramaic (LJLA). Though several of these LJLA texts have been linguistically analyzed, one text that has not received such an analysis is TgSong. Since TgSong expands well beyond the underlying Hebrew, it provides an excellent example from which to analyze distinct linguistic features. This dissertation approaches TgSong in two ways. First, it is a descriptive grammar and includes standard grammatical categories: phonology and orthography, morphology, syntax, and lexical stock. Second, in order to determine how the language is mixed and where the language of TgSong fits into the spectrum of Aramaic dialects, each grammatical feature and lexical item is compared to the other pre-modern Aramaic dialects. This dissertation shows first, that the mixing of linguistic features in TgSong is not haphazard. Individual linguistic features are largely consistent in the text, regardless of their dialectal classification.

Background Genesis 8:3b–4 (ESV) At the end of 150 days the waters had abated, and in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, the ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat. Why is this unsolved? 1. Where are the “mountains of Ararat?” - This likely referred to a mountain range, not necessarily a particular mountain called Ararat. Ararat was likely the country or region of Urartu. Urartu as a country would have extended into modern Turkey, Armenia, Iran, and Iraq—covering an area of over 100,000 square miles. This region is referred to elsewhere in the Old Testament (see 2 Kgs 19:37; Isa 37:38 – “land of Ararat”). Modern Mount Ararat is a snow-capped and dormant compound volcano in eastern Turkey. It actually consists of two stratovolcanoes, Greater Ararat and Lesser Ararat. The summit of Greater Ararat is 16,854 feet above sea level, while Lesser Ararat, just 8 miles to the east of it, is only 12,782 feet high. Together they cover a massive area of 420 square miles. 2. The Ark was Made of Wood (Gen 6:14) – how likely is it that a large wooden boat would have survived the elements in any capacity for over 4,000 years. 3. Volcanic Activity – Most modern expeditions looking for Noah’s ark have focused on Modern Mount Ararat as opposed to the greater Urartu region. If Modern Mount Ararat truly were the landing place, how could the Ark have survived this volcano’s numerous eruptions, which continued until 1840? Has Noah’s Ark been found? In the past century, dozens of individuals have claimed to have located the Ark.

And God Created..........................The Ark by David Everson God instructed Noah to build ark in which his family, and all the animals in whose nostrils was the breathe of life would be saved. This was God's plan to protect the future of the world, and so long as Noah did EXACTLY as commanded, it would work. The ark has been the subject of much attention. Was it big enough to hold all the animals. Where did it come to rest? What did it look like? Has it been found? Let's look at some of the things that we can know for sure about the ark. 1. It was big enough to hold all of the animals that God wanted on it!! The size of this barge like vessel was huge. Go to Genesis 6 and read again the dimensions and imagine just how large it was. Remember also that not all animals needed to be on the ark. Only those in whose nostrils was the breathe of life. This leaves out a huge numbers of animals, if we are thinking that "All" animals on earth needed to be on the ark. Also remember that three fourths of all animals alive on earth today would fit in a fair sized house with room to spare-THEY ARE THE INSECTS!! One male and one female ant do not take up much space! Also remember that not every breed of "dog" needed to be present on the ark, just the genotype from which the "dogs" could develop. What about the food supply for so many animals? Well, Noah and his family were able to supply exactly what was needed in some way.
