‘Memory,’ ‘Serpent,’ ‘Truman,’ ‘Magallanes’ Vie For Platino Glory Emilio Mayorga COURTESY: LLEIDA LATIN AMERICAN FILM FESTIVAL APRIL 14, 2016 | 11:44AM PT Latin Platino Awards reveals shorter longlist in Santo Domingo SANTO DOMINGO– Matías Bize’s “The Memory of Water,” Salvador del Solar’s “Magallanes,” Ciro Guerra’s “Embrace of the Serpent” and Cesc Gay’s “Truman” figure among 20 Platino Award best pic nomination candidates announced Thursday at a press-conference in Santo Domingo. Pablo Trapero’s “The Clan,” Pablo Larrain’s “The Club,” Federico Veiroj’s “The Apostate” and Paula Ortiz’s “The Bride” also made the best pic cut for the third Platino kudofest, awards aimed at highlighting talent and movies from Latin America, Spain and Portugal. Starring Elena Anaya and Benjamín Vicuña as a couple battling to overcome the loss of their small son, “Memory” competed at 2015’s Venice Days and took the Silver Colon at Spain’s Huelva Fest. Sold by Germany’s Global Screen, it most recently received plaudits from critics and audiences at this week’s Latin American Fest in Lleida, Spain. Handled by Filmax Intl., melancholy friendship dramedy “Truman” has swept awards at multiple events this season. Produced by Spain’s Impossible Films, the seventh feature of Cesc Gay is co-produced out of Argentina by K & S and Telefonica Studios/Telefe, two shingles behind Damian Szifron’s “Wild Tales” — which swept the 2nd Platino Awards — and “The Clan” — also in the running this year. Produced by Peru’s Pendulo Films and Tondero Films, Argentina’s Cepa Audiovisual and Colombia’s Cinerama and Proyectil, “Magallanes,” which is the directorial debut of Peruvian thesp Salvador del Solar (“Pantaleon y las Visitadores”), is one of the highest- profile titles from a national cinema, Peru, which, like Brazil, Spain, Argentina, Venezuela and this year Chile, has seen local movies fire up appreciable market share at their domestic box office.

  • The Secret in Their Eyes Somewhat Surprisingly, the Argentine Film
The Secret in Their Eyes Somewhat surprisingly, the Argentine film “The Secret in Their Eyes” (El Secreto de Sus Oyos in Spanish) was the winner of the Oscar for the Best Foreign Language Film released in 2009. Few in Washington had heard of it, much less seen it. It has finally opened locally at several local art houses, and this review is one shout out to see this finely crafted film before it leaves town prematurely (in Spanish with subtitles). The film opens in Buenos Aires in the year 1999, when a newly-retired criminal court investigator clerk, Benjamin Esposito (Ricardo Darin), begins reflecting on—and hoping to resolve—a notorious rape/murder case of 25 years before in which he was involved. He brings his project to his one-time supervisor, now a judge, Irene Menéndez-Hastings (Soledad Villamil), with whom he has been in love for years. Esposito looks to write a novel based on the unresolved case, which still haunts him, and he consults with Irene in his research. The film then flashes back to 1974 to follow the case’s original intricacies involving the devastated husband of the victim, Ricardo Morales (Pablo Rago), as well as Benjamin’s boss Irene, and his principal office colleague, the roguish drunk Sandoval (the comic Guillermo Francella). Esposito and Sandoval eventually identify a likely prospect, Soledad Villamil and Ricardo Darin in Oscar winner the surly thug Isidro Gomez (Javier Godino), who eventually confesses to Benjamin and Irene (in a fascinating good-cop, bad-cop sequence). Though convicted, Gomez gets off suddenly and mysteriously through the intervention of the then-Peronist government.

What's it all about? The winner of the 2010 Oscar for best foreign film, The Secret in Their Eyes is directed by Juan Jose Campanella and stars Ricardo Darin (Nine Queens) as Benjamin Esposito, a recently retired criminal court investigator, whose efforts to write a novel are frustrated when he finds himself unable to shake the memories of a 25-year-old murder case. After visiting his ex-superior Irene (Soledad Villamil), who's now a high court judge, Benjamin decides to reinvestigate the case and we flash back to his first view of the crime scene, where a beautiful young woman was raped and murdered. As Benjamin attempts to recall the details of the case, the various events unfold, from the questioning of the victim's troubled husband (Pablo Rago) to the discovery and arrest of a probable suspect (Javier Godino), only for the authorities to subsequently let him go for nefarious purposes of their own.

In Memoriam Linda Buchanon Jacob The first Whitehead International Film Festival was held in January of 2002. In April of that year Marjorie Suchocki received an email from Linda B. Jacob, telling her of the Helios Foundation's interest in contributing financial support. As costs spiraled upward from that first year's modest beginnings, it was the Helios Foundation that allowed us to keep pace with the costs, and by 2004 expand to the format of ten features and ten shorts screening over the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday weekend. This support continued through 2013, when we were able to make the transition to the generous local support of film sponsors, as well as support through ticket sales. To our loss and our sorrow, Linda Jacob passed away in 2014. In gratitude to her, we dedicate the 14th Whitehead International Film Festival to her memory. Welcome!

It analyses the discursive links with a language marked by a political tension that evidences the failure of a social system that seems to place its community beyond the civilizational boundaries of reason (Agamben).

  • The Contemporary Body of Mexican Masculinities A
THE CONTEMPORARY BODY OF MEXICAN MASCULINITIES A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Samanta Ordóñez Robles August 2015 © 2015 Samanta Ordóñez Robles THE CONTEMPORARY BODY OF MEXICAN MASCULINITIES Samanta Ordóñez Robles, Ph.D. Cornell University 2015 Abstract: This dissertation thematizes masculinity in Mexico’s post-NAFTA configurations of subjectivities and bodies, and in the geocultural politics of race and gender in order to analyze how male identities are produced and reified within these intersecting structures of oppression. It encompasses questions of resistance, gender categories established by nationalism and late capitalism, and modern/colonial power relations. I explore cinematic and literary engagements with maleness in order to demonstrate how collusion between neoliberal economic interests and the state’s established political and cultural framework of power conceals the deployment of gendered concepts of citizenship and subjectivity as a mechanism to exercise control over Mexican bodies. I conceptualize this process in terms of a violent colonial strategy of subjection which coerces men to internalize normative codes of masculinity based on essentialist categories of race, sexuality, biological sex, and space. I address relevant scholarly debates in postcolonial studies and discussions of neoliberalism’s impact on culture, politics and identity. In my first chapter, I examine patriotic male performances in northern Mexico as portrayed in the novels Duelo por Miguel Pruneda (2002) and El ejército iluminado (2006) by David Toscana. I posit that through their efforts to overcome U.S. imperialism northern males in these texts are revealed as dominated subjects for whom national masculinity is a failing model for resistance.
