Waldemar Niclevicz primeiro brasileiro a escalar o Everest, o Cho Oyu, o Shisha Pangma, o Makalu, o Lhotse, o Gasherbrum II e o K2 SonhosApresentação Verticais 11 12 Manoel Morgado Prólogo Normalmente, o encantamento acontece aos poucos.

SPRING & SUMMER 2020 ACADEMIC REGALIA Though our ceremonies are virtual this year, regalia traditions are beloved, timeless and span decades — and pandemics. Though you may not see them today, our graduates have earned the right to don regalia and adornments for the rest of their lives that reflect the dedication they have shown to their field and the love they have for their alma mater. The custom of recognizing the accomplishments of scholars through distinctive dress, color and ceremony began in the Middle Ages and has been adopted by various academic institutions throughout the world. American academic regalia developed from the English traditions that originated at the University of Cambridge and the University of Oxford and has been in continuous use in this country since Colonial times. Institutions of higher learning in the United States have adopted a system for identifying different academic degrees by use of specific gowns, hoods and colors. The baccalaureate (bachelor’s) gown is identified by long pointed sleeves. The master’s gown has a very long sleeve, closed at the bottom, and the wearer’s arm is placed through an opening in the front of the sleeve. Master’s gowns also are distinguished by green panels down the front of the gown. Doctoral gowns are distinguished by velvet panels around the neck and down the front of the gown. Three horizontal velvet bars on each sleeve also may mark the doctorate. The colorful hoods worn by master’s and doctoral graduates represent the specific degree earned and the degree granting institution. Hoods for UNT are distinguished by a kelly-green-and-white chevron lining.

THE QUEST FOR MATERIAL PROGRESS IN GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE: COLOMBIA 1840S-1900S A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate School of the University of Notre Dame in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Jairo A. Campuzano-Hoyos _________________________________ Edward Beatty, Director Graduate Program in History Notre Dame, Indiana April 2018 © Copyright by Jairo A. Campuzano-Hoyos 2018 All rights reserved THE QUEST FOR MATERIAL PROGRESS IN GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE: COLOMBIA 1840S-1900S Abstract By Jairo A. Campuzano-Hoyos Historians have often framed the historiography of nineteenth-century Colombia around relatively homogeneous, identifiable groups and their ideological struggles, labeling them accordingly after the foundation of the Liberal and Conservative parties in 1849. However, during the second half of the nineteenth century, factionalism rather than consistency characterized these groups’ members and politics, particularly the Liberal party. Thus, although the way Colombians conceived of progress was to some extent linked with ideological principles, the traditional conservative-liberal dichotomy does not work to circumscribe a group of scattered Colombians looking for models of material progress in a global perspective. To a degree, simple references to the classic Liberal– Conservative dichotomy serves to obscure more than it reveals about how Colombians and Latin Americans overall thought in the nineteenth century. This dissertation examines a large body of knowledge about other Latin American countries that many Colombian intellectuals, politicians, and entrepreneurs circulated during the second half Jairo A. Campuzano-Hoyos of the nineteenth century. Due to the brokerage role this group of people sought to play in Colombia, I refer to them as Colombia’s “progress brokers.” Some of them, openly admirers of the United States’ and Europe’s developments, resolutely argued that neither the United States nor Europe provided an appropriate model to follow.
