Celebrate July 4th with the CBAA Jerry Taylor, Glockenspiel ‘66 This year, we’re celebrating the 200th anniversary of the first glass of beer in California, as authenticated by a genuine brass plate found on the exact site we conduct our pre-parade warm-up. As legend has it, Oliver Belchwell Reilly, commanding the H.M.S. Lion and Calvados Miguel Banderas, commanding the Spanish vessel El Oso de Oro, anchored alongside each other in the early summer of 1804, in what was then known as Whalers’ Cove, in Sausalito. Instead of just filling their barrels from the nearby freshwater spring, they combined resources to brew the first beer ever made in California. The first mug was consumed on July 4, 1804, exactly 200 years ago. What a great coincidence! Along the parade route, a number of “artificial-facts” from the 1804 event will be on display. When we emerge from our well-deserved break at Smitty’s, we will reenact the creation, blessing, and consumption of California’s first beer. Afterwards, we’ll perform a couple of songs in the park, and then will have lunch, provided by the city of Sausalito. Park behind Sausalito’s City Hall, between Bee and Litho Streets (near the end of the parade) and take the free shuttle to the assembly area at 210 Third Street. The shuttle starts running at 8:15 a.m., and warm-ups and tuning start at 9:00 a.m. Muffins, coffee, and other beverages will be provided in the morning. Those in attendance will also be the first to learn the name of the march that will be played at Alumni Band Day. Family and friends are invited and encouraged to participate with us in the parade and pageant. Dress for the day is Alumni Band standard (Alumni Band shirt, blue hat, and jeans), shorts are fine. If you’d like to come in costume (many will) dress as an English or Spanish (Mexican) sailor, or whatever seems to fit the pageant. If you’d like to help with the logistics, or just to let us know you’re coming, contact Jerry Taylor at 415-332-0225 or [email protected].
