Div. XII/Comm. 46/PG International Schools for Young Astronomers – ISYA The 32nd ISYA, at Byurakan Observatory, Armenia, 12 Sept. - 3 Oct. 2010 Excerpt from a report by Jean-Pierre De Greve, Chairman PG ISYA Introduction The 32nd ISYA 2010, held at Byurakan Observatory, Armenia, was characterized by a very large number of applicants (more than 100) from a large number of countries from the region. Because of the close connections between the observatory and research groups in France and Germany and the fact that for students of those countries grants were available outside the ISYA funding, it was decided also to accept a few students from these countries in order to enlarge the international character of the student body. The following organisations sponsored the ISYA programme: Armenian Astronomical Society (ArAS), Armenian National Academy of Sciences (NAS RA), Armenian State Committee for Science (SCS), Byurakan Astrophysical Observatory (BAO), German Academic Exchange Service (Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst, DAAD), International Astronomical Union (IAU), Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters (NASL), United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The IAU allocated funds provided by the NASL to cover the travel expenses of the participants (visa, insurance, and air fare, local transport, and cultural trips). BAO, ArAS, NAS RA, SCS, and UNESCO provided accommodation for students at the observatory hotel and for lecturers in Yerevan hotels, meals and coffee breaks during the school, as well as other expenses (social events, participants’ kits, administration expenses). DAAD provided travel grants for three German students. Location The Byurakan Observatory is one of the main observational centers of the former Soviet Union and an important observatory with modern facilities in the Middle East region. -

PhDr. Jarmila Bednaříková, CSc. 2015 DECLARATION I declare that I have worked on this thesis independently, using only the primary and secondary sources listed in the bibliography. I agree with storing this work in the library of the Prehistoric Archaeology of the Near East at the Masaryk University in Brno and making it accessible for study purposes. Brno, 9th July 2015 .................................................... Signature Abstract Title: Materiality of Urartian Stone Inscriptions and its Implications Author: Martin Malata Department/Institute: Masaryk University, Faculty of Arts, Institute of Archaeology and Museology, Department of Prehistoric Archaeology of the Near East Supervisor of the diploma thesis: doc. PhDr. Jarmila Bednaříková, CSc. Abstract: The thesis deals with Urartian cuneiform inscriptions in stone from the viewpoint of the theory of materiality, that is, as tools for proliferation of ideas and for social discourse, mainly from the ruler´s perspective. In the first part, an explanation is given on how the inscriptions were treated due to their nature as a literary source. Then, theory of materiality is summarized and the concept of acral kingship is introduced briefly. In the second part, the aspects of the inscriptions are assessed: patterns of repeating, presence of formulaic expressions (curse formula, „King of Biainili, ruler of Ṭušpa city“ formula), potential deliberate damage to the inscriptions, the size of the cuneiform signs, and spatial distribution as well as temporal development of particular observed trends. -

GEEO ITINERARY ARMENIA and GEORGIA 7/15/2022– Summer Day 1: Yerevan Arrive at any time. Arrive at any time today, but we highly recommend coming in a day early as there is a lot to see in Yerevan. Our program will begin tonight in Yerevan, and we typically have a group meeting at the hotel around 6:00 p.m. Upon arrival at the hotel, please check the notice board for information about the group meeting. During the group meeting, the leader will outline the trip itinerary and answer questions. Day 2: Yerevan (B) Drive to Echmiadzin and visit the cathedral. Later, enjoy a city tour of Yerevan, followed by a visit to the Genocide Memorial. Take some free time to explore the city of Yerevan. Today we begin by driving to Echmiadzin, Armenia's ancient capital city. We will stop at its famous cathedral, one of the world's first Christian churches (built in 301 AD). Learn about the cathedral’s history and change in architectural style after it was damaged in the late 400's. Afterward, we drive back toward Yerevan. We will visit the Armenian Genocide Memorial and Museum to better understand and reflect on the first genocide of the 20th century. Commemorating the massacre of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire from 1915 to 1922, the Museum explains the story of this horrific historical event. Over 1.5 million Armenians were systematically killed by the governing Ottoman Empire and then the Republic of Turkey after the fall of the Ottoman Empire. Even today, a century later, Armenia has a population of only 3 million people. -
