Other Editors Cartoonist view America’s unique antidote for declining birth rates Women in America are having so few babies that the birth rate has hit an historic low, and that does not bode well for the nation’s future. Fewer babies now means fewer adults later to work, pay taxes, and make sure the country’s future remains bright. The latest report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says there were 3,853,472 births in the United States last year — the lowest number in 30 years. The nation’s general fertility rate was 60.2 births per 1,000 women ages 15 to 44, which represented a 3 percent drop from 2016. Those numbers would be even worse were it not for America’s immi- grant population. A study by the Pew Research Center shows 23 percent of all births in the United States in 2014 were to foreign-born mothers. About 275,000 of those babies were born to unauthorized immigrant parents, which was about a third of all births to foreign-born mothers that year. Unauthorized immigrant women birthing babies on American shores may raise eyebrows among today’s throwbacks to the anti-immigrant Know Nothing Party of the 1850s. But LIFE today’s rabid nativists are just as mis- guided. Immigrants, unauthorized or otherwise, helped build this country Out of the frying pan, onto a farm when it was young and are needed now to keep it strong. “For many years ... It’s a day of experiments. worry; you can be talented at LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). You won’t know until you jump something without being good Think about it; you’re actually in. at it. Sometimes the talent is living some of your childhood TAURUS (April 20-May 20). just a curiosity that drives you to schemes. Why stop schem- ing now? Let yourself dream outrageously. Outcomes that, at the moment, seem unlikely may not be as farfetched as you imagine. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. BEETLE BAILEY 21). You want to lay the founda- tion for a big change. The trou- ble is that you don’t really know how things will culminate and what will develop. You only know that it will be different from what’s happening now. A sense of readiness is all you need. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). A good friend will nurture your idiosyncrasies and love you for the parts of you that don’t conform to her expectations or his beliefs. A good friend wants you to be more of who you MALLARD FILLMORE already are. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). You sometimes wish you were better at affairs of the heart. Then again, people who seem to be in control of their “feels” are possibly not feeling them as deeply as you are. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). Surprising events wake you up like cold water to the face. You’ll wonder why you didn’t see it before. You were looking at other things. No matter.
