We had successful Eastern & Western Specialties. The Northwest gang is working hard to create a great National experience for those of you who can come to our beautiful corner of the U.S. The Board has approved combining the Eastern and National Specialties in 2010. More information on that will be forthcoming. When a Scribe is produced, we are going to start posting past 10 and 20 year old comparable Scribes and Hieroglyphics on the Website for your enjoyment. The 2008 PHCA financials were reviewed by our audit committee earlier this year and resulted in a clean audit. We have not been able to conduct a 2007 audit because Nancy Sowerbutts, our then Treasurer, ig- nored requests to turn over her records for review. On May 5, 2009, a committee of the board voted unanimously to instigate legal action to reclaim possession of club records. The records were dropped off at our attorney’s office on July 27th. Our auditors will conduct their review and will let us know their findings as soon as possible. The board of directors has appointed the nominating committee for next years board positions. At the end of this year terms will expire for Pam Haig, Rita Sacks & Stephen Sipperly. The nominating committee will be chaired by Sheila Hoffman. Committee members are: Darlene Dimor and Linda Witt. Alternates: Theresa Harper & Jan Butterworth. Cynthia Guinn DON’T FORGET Check the PHCA Website: www.ph-club.org on a regular basis. Carmen has been keeping the National Specialty information up-dated on a regular basis! Don’t miss your opportunity to join all the fun! 4 Notes from Your Editor Not more than a week ago, I was bemoaning the fact that I just didn’t have enough material to publish the Scribe, which as we all know, was loooong overdue. Well, as happens most times …. Beware what you wish. Suddenly I have enough to keep me busy for days! It’s marathon typing for me. Please remember that without input from our members, the newsletter can become very boring. I know if you own a Pharaoh Hound, then you “have” to have something you can share :) Send it on to me. We all love to share stories. Please join me in welcoming the following newly approved members to the PHCA: Andrew Dolan Ashlie Cauvel Betsy Stivers Mariah Houser Kim Bow Well, it’s been a summer full of Pharaoh Hound activities … both in the ring and on the coursing fields. And there’s even more to come with the upcoming National Specialty getting close. I hope many of you will be able to attend the 2009 National. The Pacific Northwest people have been working nonstop to insure a great event. Thanks guys! Since our Webmaster Supreme, Carmen Davis has started posting our membership roster on the “members only” page of the PHCA website, it has saved me many, many hours of updating that list every June. Be sure and check it out if you’re trying to find contact information on a member. 5 6 7 AKC … CELEBRATING 125 YEARS LONG BEACH, CALIFORNIA DECEMBER 12 & 13 EUKANUBA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP 2009 General Information *Provided by Robert Newman Best of Breed Entry $75.00 All other classes $50.00 All dogs entered that are breeder/owner/handled will be eligi- ble for the Best Bred-By-Exhibitor Award Catalog Ad deadline: October 16, 2009 Cost: Full page B & W - $140.00 Full page color w/1 photo—$800.00. Betsy Stivers lives in Santa Barbara with her husband Gary, son Sean and Pharaoh Hounds Osiris and Cairo. Betsy first noticed the Pharaoh Breed in 2003 when she visited the Santa Barbara dog show with Sean. Later, in the spring of 2006, their younger golden retriever, Chester, passed away very suddenly with a massive seizure. The family was devastated and so was the older dog, Timmy. Betsy decided to find another dog for the family and that would be a good companion to Timmy. Betsy and Sean began researching for a breed that would hopefully have less inherited health is- sues, could hold up jogging regularly, get along well with others and shed less. They decided to try to find a Pharaoh. Several phone calls and research led them to La Ree Drolet. It turns out that her litter was born on the same time that Chester passed away. The family visited the litter and fell in love with one pup in particular, now known as Osiris. One year later La Ree asked for Osiris to come to a dog show in Pasadena. He won a major his first day in the ring and they got ‘hooked’.

Que Sera, Sera didn’t fit this time. I know that a newsletter in December is something that has not been done in the past, but we want to continue to keep the lines of communication open all year long. The Society is busy and many things are happening and much will be happening in 2009. I guess you could say this is a small historical event. The recent Holiday Party was a success and it was wonderful to see so many of you come out, in spite of the weather. A Thank You to everyone who helped plan the evening and to Mike Johnson and his hardworking staff at Coral Gables. SDHS continues to move forward and you should all have received your membership renewal information in the mail recently. We hope that you will mail your renewal back to us soon. Your membership is important to the success of the Society. If you did not receive one, please let us know by emailing us at [email protected] or calling the SDHS office at 269.857.5751. For those who have responded, we thank you. Now for a plug --- we are in need of volunteers to plan the 2009 St.

Van Jordan Rosal: Patrick Rosal A: Speaker from audience Levy: Welcome to Our Life in Poetry: New Poets/New Poetics. I must say this is the youngest group of poets we’ve had here at the Philoctetes Center, and you’re also alive, which is different than some of the other poets. We’re really working in that direction. We want the living. I’m very proud to introduce Michael Braziller. Mike Braziller is president and publisher of Persea Books, a literary publishing company that he founded in 1975. Mike will moderate tonight’s panel and introduce our other distinguished—I don’t know how to put this—young poets. Thanks, Mike. Braziller: Thanks, Frank, and I’d like to thank Ed Nersessian, Ellen Fertig, Adam Ludwig and Polly Rosenwaike for their help—and Patricia Brody was a special help organizing this particular panel. This is a Philoctetes poetry first, a reading by three accomplished young writers, followed by discussion of formative pressures and influences, and what of their lives has come into their poems. Each will read for about ten or fifteen minutes, and then talk for a little while, generally about when poetry first occurred in their lives and about their life in poetry. We’ll look a little—it’s inevitable—at the regional, the local, family, street, neighborhoods, small town, coming of age, along with social awareness, politics, social criticism.

  • Sing Me a Song, Doris
Sing me a song, Doris. 1 Humming a Doris Day tune, I abandoned the body. If he wasn’t dead, he would soon enough die for lack of medical attention. In the Corfiot heat the corpse would desiccate like the mummified remains of St Spyridon, at rest on the golden isle. I wouldn’t mourn for Dimitri Patridis. If pushed into a witness box I would say it was accidental but a jury (and I have faced a few in my time) might argue differently. Cross my heart and hope to make good my escape. On that hot summer morning ten days earlier when my phone rang I had not expected it to end with a body. All I knew then was that Maggie, my younger sister, had been injured in a speedboat accident. That’s what they said through a heavy Greek accent. The sting in the tail? She was on the island of Corfu. My details had been in her bag. Not exactly listed as next-of-kin but as her brother and the first number on a small business card in her satchel. I barely had time to process my surprise that she was on Corfu before my plane tickets were booked and I was preparing to fly to the island from my home in Edinburgh. The one saving grace was that Maggie also lived in the city, though she was away across town. I stayed out west near to Murrayfield stadium; Maggie lived in on the east side, near Easter Road. Pure coincidence but she loved football and I loved rugby.

  • Que Sera Sera Robert Stone Before I Get Down to the Main Course of This Talk, I’Ll Serve up a Little Hors-D’Oeuvre, Getting a Long-Held Grievance Off My Chest
Que sera sera Robert Stone Before I get down to the main course of this talk, I’ll serve up a little hors-d’oeuvre, getting a long-held grievance off my chest. It is a given of human experience that things appear to happen in order. Some things happen after other things, and yet other things happen after them. The most reasonable explanation for this experience is that things do in fact happen after other things, and we notice the fact. The whole area of ‘before and after’ is called ‘time’, one of those abstract nouns that, in the words of Philip Larkin, “brings the priest and the doctor in their long coats running over the fields”. As soon as we invent an abstract noun – like time, mind, the good – people assume that it must refer to some kind of nonphysical entity, and a deluge of nonsense is unleashed. Time flows, events pass from future to past, the ‘now’ moves through time. Just as with ‘mind’, we could abolish the word ‘time’ from the language and still say all meaningful sentences we want to say without using either the word itself or any synonym of it. So I intend to talk about my chosen topic without once using the word ‘time’ – from hereon in! The problem My subject is statements about the future: can they be true now? To clear away two possible ambiguities before I start, first, when I talk about statements, I’m referring only to unambiguous ones, where there is no doubt about what they mean.
