As contemporary music critic and composer, Francesco D’Arcais, wrote: Maybe for the first time, at least in quite a while, learned people, the audience and the press shared the same opinion on an opera. [Composers] called upon to choose the works to be staged, among those presented for the Sonzogno [opera] competition, immediately picked Mascagni’s Cavalleria rusticana as one of the best; the audience awarded this composer triumphal honours, and the press 1 unanimously praised it to the heavens. D’Arcais acknowledged Mascagni’smeritsbut, inthesamearticle, alsourgedcaution in too enthusiastically festooning the work with critical laurels: the dangers of excessive adulation had already become alarmingly apparent in numerous ill-starred precedents. In the two decades prior to its premiere, several other Italian composers similarly attained outstanding critical and popular success with a single work, but were later unable to emulate their earlier achievements. Among these composers were Filippo Marchetti (Ruy Blas, 1869), Stefano Gobatti (IGoti, 1873), Arrigo Boito (with the revised version of Mefistofele, 1875), Amilcare Ponchielli (La Gioconda, 1876) and Giovanni Bottesini (Ero e Leandro, 1879). Once again, and more than a decade after Bottesini’s one-hit wonder, D’Arcais found himself wondering whether in Mascagni ‘We [Italians] have finally [found] … the legitimate successor to [our] great composers, the person 2 who will perpetuate our musical glory?’ This hoary nationalist interrogative returned in 1890 like an old-fashioned curse.

Study the Background Information and the sources carefully, and then answer all the questions. Background Information There were many obstacles to Italian unification. Austria, which directly governed parts of Italy, and had influence over the rest, was ready to fight to retain its position in the country. However, there were other important obstacles. Few people in Italy felt ‘Italian’. Their loyalties were more local. Italians in the North and South had little in common and actually felt contempt for each other. There were many differences even among the small number who wanted unification. For example, some were republicans, while others wanted a constitutional monarchy. Some wanted complete unification while others would have been happy with a federation. The Papacy was another obstacle. And then there were foreign powers, such as France under Napoleon III, which were always ready to meddle in Italian affairs, not always to the advantage of the cause of unification.

Nicola Fabrizi and Maltese weapons in Sicily during the Spedizione dei Mille istitutoeuroarabo.it/DM/nicola-fabrizi-and-maltese-weapons-in-sicily-during-the-spedizione-dei-mille/ Comitato di Redazione 1 luglio 2021 di Arnold Cassola [*] When Garibaldi landed in Marsala with his mille on 11th May 1860, fighting immediately started in the western part of Sicily. The unification process of Italy was well on its way. In the 19th century news did not travel very fast, but of course the population living in that part of Sicily soon got to know of Garibaldi’s exploits. The same cannot be said for all parts of Sicily. How fast did news travel at that time to the more remote parts of the island? The scope of this work is to show that in fact, as regards the town of Modica, which is to be found in the South Eastern part of Sicily, and today falls under the province of Ragusa, a relevant amount of information regarding Garibaldi’s progress on the island as well as other related activity actually arrived in Modica via telegrams which were sent from the island of Malta, which lies around 164 kms. to the south of this Sicilian town. Nicola Fabrizi The texts of some of these telegrams are to be found today in the section entitled Corrispondenza e scritture varie del periodo risorgimentale (1856-1861) of the Archivio De Leva, Archives of Ragusa, Sezione di Modica. Many of them have been collected and reproduced in the thesis entitled Con il vangelo e la croce in mano – Vita dell’Abate Giuseppe de Leva Gravina (1786 – 1860), which was presented at the University of Perugia in 2003 by Rosario Distefano.

  • The Postal Services in Malta in the Mid-Nineteenth Century Some Mercantile, Commercial and Social Aspects Dr
The Postal Services in Malta in the Mid-Nineteenth Century Some Mercantile, Commercial and Social Aspects Dr. Paul Cassar M.D. Philatelic Section by Dr. Alfred Bonnici M.D. This account is based on the contents of two registers which were found by chance by the present writer in the spring of 1978 during a stroll in the countryside in the area of Tal Mirakli, Attard. They had been discarded and dumped in a rubbish heap. 1 Each register measures 30cm by 21.5cm. Some of the leaves are torn with missing pieces. They have dated entries, written in Italian in faded ink. There are indications that they were originally bound but their hard covers are missing together with their backstrips; joints are broken; the leaves show some foxing and are frayed in the margins. Each page is divided by vertical lines into columns headed:- Date and time of arrival of letters; name of ship; date and time of dispatch of letters; name and address of person receiving the letter; md a column bearing the name of the employee delivering the letter. The earlier register starts on the 16th May 1838 and ends on the 18th November 1838 with a few blank folios at the back. The other register has a "titlepage" with the words Libra resposte dalli 9 ottobre 1848 alii 13 febbraio 1850 (sic). The Time of the Order of St John During the time of the Order of St John in Malta (1530-1798), the main scope for an overseas postal service was to meet the requirements of trade and the administrative affairs of the Order.

(Private Collection) THE 'SCOGLIO INGRATO': ARCHAEOLOGY, HISTORY AND MAZZINIAN BELIEFS IN MALTA THROUGH THE VIEWS OF FRANCESCO CRISPI Simon Mercieca My interest in the life and works of Francesco Crispi (1819-1901) dates back to the early 1990s, when on winning a scholarship from the Italian Government, I went to Rome for one year to study at the University of La Sapienza. The course chosen for my studies was related to the History of the Italian Risorgimento. Italy was then at the centre of political turmoil, under direct fire from'the Mani Pulite investigation: the magistrates' inquiry on political corruption. The character chosen for this study was himself, during different moments of his career, at loggerheads with the police, the judicial system and the political establishment. Francesco Crispi was one of those Italian politicians who in his early days suffered arrests and exile for his liberal stand and once Italy was united, he became also the subject of impeachment. On the steps leading to the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters of the University of Sapienza, a shabbily dressed middle-aged man used to set up what the Italians call a bancarella, or stand selling old books at a cheap price. I used to stop' in front of this bancarella to see what type of books he had for sale, keeping a look out for any volume having a connection with Malta. To my surprise, I found two books, fu1l of documents written by Francesco Crispi himself.
