Roberts presented information to the leadership of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in January of 1922 that fundamentally challenged the entire premise of their religious beliefs. New research shows that in addition to church leadership, this information was also presented during the neXt few months to a select group of highly educated Mormon men and women outside of church hierarchy. This group represented many aspects of Mormon belief, different areas of eXpertise, and varying approaches to dealing with challenging information. Their stories create a beautiful tapestry of Mormon life in the transition years from polygamy, frontier life, and resistance to statehood, assimilation, and respectability. A study of the people involved illuminates an important, overlooked, underappreciated, and eXciting period of Mormon history. -

“I remember when I was preparing to be trained as a fighter pilot. We spent a great deal of our preliminary military training in physical exercise. I’m still not exactly sure why endless running was considered such an essential preparatory part of becoming a pilot. Nevertheless, we ran and we ran and we ran some more. “As I was running I began to notice something that, frankly, troubled me. Time and again I was being passed by men who smoked, drank, and did all manner of things that were contrary to the gospel and, in particular, to the Word of Wisdom. “I remember thinking, ‘Wait a minute! Aren’t I supposed to be able to run and not be weary?’ But I was weary, and I was overtaken by people who were definitely not following the Word of Wisdom. I confess, it troubled me at the time. I asked myself, was the promise true or was it not?” Jarom He was the great grandson of Sariah and Lehi He was the grandson of Jacob and son of Enos He was a record keeper of the small plates of Nephi around 420 to 361 BC He had the shortest book in the Book of Mormon He declines his own personal words of inspiration (Jarom 1:2) He described the ‘hardness of hearts’ of the people He had the spirit of prophecy and revelation He counsels Omni, his son, to read large plates for further history of the people Book of Jarom Written in commandment from his father. Written for the benefit of his brethren the Lamanites. -

SPIRITUAL GIFTS An Overview SERVING Definition: This gift is the ability and desire to identify the practical needs involved in a task related to the Kingdom of God and then to help meet those needs. Description: • Do you enjoy doing tasks that help others minister effectively? • Do you sense when others need a helping hand and are ready to give it? • Are you content to take orders rather than to give them? • Would you prefer to let someone else have the “limelight” while offering a supportive role? • Have others mentioned that you seem to enjoy doing routine tasks and that you do them well? This gift is sometimes referred to as “helps.” With this gift the Spirit brings empowerment to willingly bear the burdens of other Christians so that they can do their tasks more effectively. The person who has this gift is able to work gladly behind the scenes in order that God’s work is fulfilled. There is a desire to help others in their ministries by aiding them in practical ways. People with the gift of service or helps are ones who “get things done” and “see the job through.” A person with the gift of service is alert to practical needs and has a desire to meet them. Those with this gift do not seek recognition or a position in the “spotlight;” they just love to help out. They are content with serving in the background knowing that their contribution will bless the church, display the love of Christ to the world, and bring glory to God. -

Hoskisson Each dietary substance or element that appears in the revelation known as the Word of Wisdom, both the prohibitions and the admonitions, also can be found in the health literature contemporaneous to the 1830s. Nevertheless, although though there is nothing actually new in terms of Word of Wisdom items, I will demonstrate that the Word of Wisdom is not simply a rehash of nineteenth century ideas, as some have suggested.1 Indeed, the Word of Wisdom is quite different and unique, but not in the way it has usually been taught. When the Word of Wisdom was revealed to Joseph Smith in February 1833, the Ohio area had already become “a hotbed of temperance and health reform sentiment.”2 This fact has led some observers to conclude that the Word of Wisdom was only a product of the time, not a revelatory injunction. For example, “according to Dean D. McBrien [writing in 1929], . the Word of Wisdom was a remarkable distillation of the prevailing thought of frontier America in the early 1830’s. Each provision in the revelation, he [McBrien] claimed, pertained to an item which had formed the basis of widespread popu- lar agitation in the early 1830’s.”3 Therefore, questions such as, “Did Ameri- cans generally know that alcohol, tobacco, tea, coffee, and excesses of meat, were bad for you; and that grains and fruits were good for you?” is a moot PA UL Y. -

LESSON 22 The Word of Wisdom: “A Principle with Promise” D&C 89; 49:19-21; 59:15-21; 88:124, Our Heritage, p. 25-26 OVERVIEW: Why was the Word of Wisdom revealed? The Lord’s counsel about what is not good for the body. The Lord’s counsel about what is good for the body. Promised blessings for obedience to the Word of Wisdom. The Word of Wisdom is to sharpen our physical senses to receive revelation. Section 88 is about being in tune spiritually. Then Section 89 is telling us that the body needs to be in shape physically so that our faculties are clean and able to receive spiritual revelation. Heritage, p. 25-26 During the winter of 1833 the School of the Prophets met frequently, and Joseph and Emma Smith both became concerned about the brethren’s customary use of tobacco, especially the cloud of tobacco smoke in meetings and lack of cleanliness caused by chewing tobacco. Joseph Smith inquired of the Lord about the matter and received the revelation that is known as the Word of Wisdom. This revelation gave the Lord’s commandments for the care of the body and spirit, and promised that those who obeyed them would receive the spiritual blessings of “wisdom and great treasures of knowledge, even hidden treasures” (D&C 89:19). The Word of Wisdom also contained information about health that was not known to the medical or scientific world at the time but has since been proven to be of great benefit, such as the counsel not to use tobacco or alcohol. -

What Positive Psychologists and Mormons Can Learn From Each Other Abstract Positive psychologists work to identify cultural practices from across the world that contribute to the good life (Peterson, 2006). Research frequently finds that eligiousr engagement is positively correlated to well-being. The mechanisms by which religion influences well-being, however, are not fully understood and may vary widely by faith. This paper focuses on members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (“Latter-day Saints" or "Mormons") who report particularly high well-being—some of the highest well-being of any religious group in America (Newport, Witters, & Agrawal, 2012a).
