KEN SCIGULINSKY’S MEMORIES FROM TREMONT AVENUE Living at 2464 Tremont Ave. in the 1940s – Part 1 put the clothes into the wringer, marveling as the rubber-coated rollers squeezed the water from the clothes, draining the water back into the washing chamber. My mother was adamant that we understood how to activate the quick release bar in the event we caught our fingers in the wringer. It was something we could not ignore because she showed us her right index finger, missing a piece at the end, revealing how she caught it in a wringer as a child, before washers had soft rollers and a quick release mechanism. Hot water for washing and bathing was provided by something called a side arm water heater. The extremely small bathroom dictated that the water heater also be small. There was a small, cylindrical metal device in the bathroom that contained a coil that was heated by a gas flame ignited manually with a match. Water in the coil was heated and flowed into a small tank acting as a reservoir for the hot water. When you needed a supply of hot water, as for laundry or a bath, you activated the system and you were all set. One evening, my young sister was standing on the toilet seat cover being dried after a bath when she slipped and fell against the water heater, resulting in a severe burn to her back. I lived on the Southside until I was 10 years old and had two much younger sisters. With only two very small bedrooms, it was necessary that we sleep in the same bed together. That arrangement was a cause of frequent discomfort since one, or sometimes both, of the sisters wet the bed. A hose was connected to the kitchen faucet, and the small hot water coil boiler in the bathroom was ignited to heat the water for the laundry.
